To be offended that no one wants my sofa

We have an old leather sofa that we are trying to get rid of as we need the space.
It’s been a great sofa-still comfy to sit or lie on, clean, no major scratches etc. It does look quite wrinkly now but I don’t think it’s that bad-I thought at least someone would want it for their dogs or something.

I advertised it on market place for a tenner for weeks then dropped the price to free a few weeks ago.

One charity shop came to collect it but wouldn’t take it (luckily they took some other furniture so it wasn’t a wasted trip)
I’ve just shown a photo to another charity shop who have also said no thank you because the leather is quite wrinkly.

I felt quite offended on behalf of my faithful sofa especially as there were definitely some worse specimens on display in the shop!

Now the only option is to chop it up and take it to the tip which seems a real shame.

it’s got the relevant fire labels so it’s not that.
Maybe I’m just blind to how it looks!

The British Heart Foundation will come and take it away and sell it to a family in need. They then let you know how much was raised for their charity. I did this with an old sofa of mine that was in beautiful condition, it just didn’t fit when I moved house.

BHF are incredibly picky about the sofas they are willing to collect.

PollyBell · 03/10/2025 09:03

I believe charities need it to have a fire label

The only thing they asked me about was whether the sofa had the fire labels. Which it did. It made £160 for their charity which I was really pleased about.

I bought a new sofa last week. It didn’t fit in the space so they picked it up today.
the delivery men were fairly rough with it, turned it over in the wet road today to get it back into the van. I asked them if they wouldn't mind being a bit careful as I was keen to get a full refund. They told me not to worry as the sofa would get binned anyway. I couldn’t believe it. Like, why can’t they partner with the BHF, and give them any such items who can then sell it on. This was literally a brand new sofa. Not to mention the landfill aspect of it.

Why couldn’t you measure the space before buying the sofa?

3luckystars · 04/10/2025 07:46

I agree! I can’t believe you got a refund for that if it was your mistake.

(I am not criticising you, I have done a lot worse but I’m just surprised you got away with that.)

I had the same, OP. Was trying to gift an IKEA sofa in pretty much perfect condition, a three seater, comfortable for sleeping too as no arms and a good shape for sleeping. It was the transport - I had a lot of interest that eventually fizzled out as they couldn't arrange transport and wouldn't pay a man with a van to help them. We sadly had to chop up and take to tip. I was gutted.

Don't mean to sound mean but I hate leather sofas, they look weird and wrinkly and make fart noises when you move and are sticky when it's hot. I wouldn't want a leather sofa even if free 😭 Sorry OP please don't be offended 😭🤣

I agree with this 100% 😂 I HATE leather sofas, they always feel cold yet clammy at the same time and I somehow always feel like I'm sliding off them very slowly 😂 I also don't think I have ever seen a leather sofa that doesn't look cracked, wrinkly and peeling after a couple of short years.

I did. But it was L shaped and I couldn’t get it through the door. It’s an awkward space with an awkward entrance. I only thought to measure the actual space for the sofa. Not the entry points.

They would bin a sofa that could be £1000+

why? Thats madness

Gratedcamembert · 04/10/2025 12:08

It sounds past its best. Just tip it!

Well it wasn't an expensive sofa, it was £700 from Habitat, it was in theory just for the DC's TV room where I don't care if it gets bashed up. But the delivery guys said that this is policy. One of the delivery guys said he'd love to buy it at a reduced price but he has to take it back to prove I gave it back. That's why he didn't care that the sofa wasn't put back into the packaging and that the cushions were all over the wet van floor. It really pained me to see that. I wish they had a better option than just binning it like working with councils to help people in emergency housing or something. Maybe they do and the delivery guys just didn't know it. Seems like such a waste.

In a ridiculous sofa update…
We hoiked the thing outside ready for collection tomorrow.
Then realised that the ‘space’ looks bad without it and the 2 seater we thought would replace it isn’t big enough for the number of people who regularly pile onto it.
So after a couple of hours soul searching we rescued the wrinkly old dear back into the house with a lot of ‘pivot’ing and huffing and puffing and she’s remaining until she disintegrates!

Ha ha ha 🤣. That’s just the kind of thing that I would do . Throw on a blanket and some new cushions and give yourself a pat on the back for being green.

Mossstitch · 13/10/2025 16:10

@Chocolatemoosecups I had an equally tatty leather chesterfield that had withstood 3 boys leaping all over it and about 25 years service, cushions scratched and one quite obvious split. Put it outside to get the council to collect, it was solid oak frame and very, very heavy and hard just to get it on the drive by the front door...............went out next morning and it was gone🤷‍♂️ try that first🤣

Just noticed your update and have to agree that I was sad it had gone, all the memories of my boys on it🥲
