To be offended that no one wants my sofa

We have an old leather sofa that we are trying to get rid of as we need the space.
It’s been a great sofa-still comfy to sit or lie on, clean, no major scratches etc. It does look quite wrinkly now but I don’t think it’s that bad-I thought at least someone would want it for their dogs or something.

I advertised it on market place for a tenner for weeks then dropped the price to free a few weeks ago.

One charity shop came to collect it but wouldn’t take it (luckily they took some other furniture so it wasn’t a wasted trip)
I’ve just shown a photo to another charity shop who have also said no thank you because the leather is quite wrinkly.

I felt quite offended on behalf of my faithful sofa especially as there were definitely some worse specimens on display in the shop!

Now the only option is to chop it up and take it to the tip which seems a real shame.

it’s got the relevant fire labels so it’s not that.
Maybe I’m just blind to how it looks!

Show us a picture then

deirdrerasheed · 01/10/2025 16:42

Get the council to pick it up. Do you have difficulty letting go of things generally?

MyDeftHedgehog · 01/10/2025 16:42

Have you tried any other chazzers?
At least they take it away for free 😆

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 01/10/2025 16:44

Homeless charities collect them for free. Places such as Emmaus

Ilovepastafortea · 01/10/2025 16:48

In 1983 when we were first married we bought a second hand 3 piece suite through the newspapers (before days of internet, everyone bought second hand stuff through newspaper ads) for about £30. As newly weds living in the only house that we could afford which was definitely a doer-upper, we just needed something to sit on. In fact just about everything was bought second hand through friends & newspaper.

How times have moved on. I had a new kitchen installed recently and tried to give away a fridge that was 9 months old, in good clean new condition, but had been replaced by a new fridge/freezer. I thought a newly partnered/married couple might be grateful for it. However I couldn't give the blinking thing away!

I was advised that people would assume that something was probably wrong with it if it was being given away. So, in the end, I sold it on Gumtree for £15 - it was sold the same day that the ad went on.

I was amazed.

Nowt so queer as folk. 😂

EnchantedToMeetYou2 · 01/10/2025 16:15

Am I the only one that needs to see the sofa? 🫠😂

That was my first thought

@Chocolatemoosecups we need a pic. Instead of a diagram 😂

seriously though it’s probably just down to the fact that the average person cannot pick up a sofa or chairs I only have a car I wouldn’t be able to do it to hire a van would be maybe 40 £50 a day so it’s not really a free sofa

If you want to get rid of it you will have to pay the council. I think it’s £30 for two or four items is how I got rid of my fridge freezers.

I think a big problem for lots of people looking for secondhand sofas is transport. The sofa might be £10 but unless they have a vehicle large enough then how do they get it home?

This.

I’ve bought a lot recently on Gumtree ( one of my kids has a new flat ) and it’s awash with leather sofas for free or £10/ 20. Whereas the more modern ones (like Ikea / next ) can be taken apart and transported in a car.

Chocolatemoosecups · 01/10/2025 16:52

No way am I showing the sofa! Objectively it does look very wrinkly (more so in the photo than real life!) and it will be recognisable!

Didn’t know free cycle was still going so will stick it on there as well.

I realise it’s the transport issue and also that most people probably don’t seek out sofas that are past their best 😆

I will try emmaus and if they reject it I’ll phone the council (I didn’t know you could do that!)

I think the venn diagram of people who can't afford a new sofa + have means to transport a secondhand one is very small.

I.e. most people want a brand new sofa (I wouldn't consider second hand), but if you can't afford a new one you probably don't have access to a van or means to pay for removal either.

Plus I think you wildly overestimate how many people would accept a fairly old, somewhat wrinkly sofa.

Aliflowers · 01/10/2025 16:54

We replaced our sofas just before Christmas last year. We were getting rid of a Black leather 4-2-1 suite which was absolutely immaculate but just wanted to change the style. When I purchased the new one I made the sale contingent on them removing the old one from the house. The sales man tried to convince me to sell it or give it away but as I said to him if it’s that easy you’ll have no problem getting rid of it yourself

i wouldnt want to use some random strangers used sofa so wouldn’t be surprise if someone had no interest in mine. Ahd they’re not worth easily transported. The 4 seater was over 2.5m in length

How can your wrinkly leather sofa be outing?! 😂

FoxglovesAndLupins · 01/10/2025 16:59

Try Sofalistic as they organise delivery. I used Freecycle for mine and found a buyer with a van.

LadySuzanne · 01/10/2025 16:59

In my area of Dorset, there used to be a free collection for large items like sofas. Now they only collect for free if the items are in a good enough condition to be passed on to furniture reuse groups

"We offer free collections for good quality donations and a paid for disposal service as an alternative. "

"In the vast majority of cases it is £36 for the first item, and £8 for every item thereafter, but there are some items that may cost more, such as pianos, range cookers or large American style fridge/freezers. It can also vary dependent on where you live, as our disposal costs are different based on your postcode. There are also some items charged at a lower rate."

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 01/10/2025 16:59

Have you tried eBay? The charity furniture shop near me didn’t even reply to my email offering the donation so I put it on eBay and had so many messages about it and lots of bids. Someone collected it within an hour of winning the auction.

JamDisaster · 01/10/2025 17:03

I had this experience when I tried to give my telly to a charity helping ex-homeless people furnish new accommodation. Not wide enough.

Mayflower282 · 01/10/2025 15:59

Put a post that says “can arrange delivery for a small fee” and then use anyvan.com to give them a quote.

You can’t arrange delivery for a small fee if you car giving the website of a van company. How do you know it will be a small fee and you are asking them to arrange it so it is misleading.

Standingtree · 01/10/2025 17:06

I think it's because there are quite a few available.I got rid of a bed sofa, but only because it went to a student who had used the sofa once and found it comfortable.Don't feel offended.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 01/10/2025 17:09

The British Heart Foundation will come and take it away and sell it to a family in need. They then let you know how much was raised for their charity. I did this with an old sofa of mine that was in beautiful condition, it just didn’t fit when I moved house.

Salvadoridory · 01/10/2025 17:12

I feel for the sofa, it seems so unfair that something becomes worthless after years of service but I might be weird with my affection for inanimate objects. I have a little chest of drawers called Ivor, no idea why its called that. I paid a fortune to ship it here not because it goes with anything in my modern villa in the middle east but because it didnt seem fair to leave it behind. There was a fire in a massive warehouse full of transformers a few years ago and the local news said they didnt manage to rescue them all. I felt really sad even though I googled what a transformer is and they are quite ugly.

ClaredeBear · 01/10/2025 17:12

Suspect lots of people would like it. It they need to be able to transport it, which narrows your market by quite a lot.

ClaredeBear · 01/10/2025 17:13

Also, charity shops know what will sell and what won’t and they have limited space.

PersephoneSmith · 01/10/2025 17:13

You are suffering from waster's guilt, you don't want it, but you want someone else to want it because you know that it has life left in it and you don't really need a new sofa.

Get over yourself. Keep the sofa because it is still good enough to use, or throw it away.

AutumnWreath · 01/10/2025 17:15

If you won't post a picture on an anonymous thread , I think deep down you know the answer as to why it is not being snapped up .
Be honest and admit you are trying get pass it on so you haven't got the hassle of getting rid .
If it was lovely you'd be keeping it , and you say because you have no space ? So where was it before when it was being used ?

Homegrownberries · 01/10/2025 17:18

I could understand being offended if nobody wanted you, or something you made, or something/someone you love. This is an old sofa. As pp said, get over yourself.

This one isn't in beautiful condition.
