To be offended that no one wants my sofa

Chocolatemoosecups · 01/10/2025 15:54

We have an old leather sofa that we are trying to get rid of as we need the space.
It’s been a great sofa-still comfy to sit or lie on, clean, no major scratches etc. It does look quite wrinkly now but I don’t think it’s that bad-I thought at least someone would want it for their dogs or something.

I advertised it on market place for a tenner for weeks then dropped the price to free a few weeks ago.

One charity shop came to collect it but wouldn’t take it (luckily they took some other furniture so it wasn’t a wasted trip)
I’ve just shown a photo to another charity shop who have also said no thank you because the leather is quite wrinkly.

I felt quite offended on behalf of my faithful sofa especially as there were definitely some worse specimens on display in the shop!

Now the only option is to chop it up and take it to the tip which seems a real shame.

it’s got the relevant fire labels so it’s not that.
Maybe I’m just blind to how it looks!

The thing even if you’re young in your first house, you’re probably going to make do with dining chairs and your bed until you sort out a sofa of your own choosing from one of the big places, on credit
Then there’s cheap brand new sofas from places like Argos, Wilkos etc.

With Klarna and the other options most things are accessible to everyone, who wouldn’t necessarily be grateful for someone’s old wrinkly sofa. They want new, or something more in a current style.

Even if you’re on the bones of your arse, chances are you live in a furnished room in a house share.

You said the sofa was suitable for someone’s dog. If you’ve got room to put a sofa in a room just for your dog’s use then you’re probably not short of money.
I never think, ‘this isn’t good enough for me so it’s good enough for someone else’ hence my council suggestion. The council will come and dispose of my old junk every now and then, I just arrange it through their website.

VoltaireMittyDream · 01/10/2025 17:20

I absolutely know what you mean, OP - it’s hard to think of your faithful sofa not going to a loving home with people who will appreciate it.

But I come from a family of hoarders who were always trying to give me their worn out old shite that meant a lot to them and would just be a massive ugly stinky inconvenience to me, so I can see both sides of this situation!

If you won't post a picture on an anonymous thread , I think deep down you know the answer as to why it is not being snapped up .
Be honest and admit you are trying get pass it on so you haven't got the hassle of getting rid .
If it was lovely you'd be keeping it , and you say because you have no space ? So where was it before when it was being used ?

This ^

I don't do Facebook but OH does. He reckons marketplace is full of crap that people are attempting to 'give away' because they don't want the hassle/expense of getting rid of it themselves.

If it's still got some life left in it, put it on an eBay auction with a low starting price @Chocolatemoosecups...or pay for the council bulky waste collection.

FeliciaFancybottom · 01/10/2025 17:26

Could you get it some Botox or other treatments and try again? Even sofas are suffering in this ageist society.

Chocolatemoosecups · 01/10/2025 16:52

No way am I showing the sofa! Objectively it does look very wrinkly (more so in the photo than real life!) and it will be recognisable!

Didn’t know free cycle was still going so will stick it on there as well.

I realise it’s the transport issue and also that most people probably don’t seek out sofas that are past their best 😆

I will try emmaus and if they reject it I’ll phone the council (I didn’t know you could do that!)

Deleted as I realised it was a pointless msg repeating you and other pp

BettysRoasties · 01/10/2025 17:27

Odds of finding a sofa you like, isn’t in bad condition and a Man with van isn’t going to charge an arm and a leg for is low.

Then add in the risk of bringing fleas or bed bugs or something home with you and yeah plus naked arses and sex on sofas and now I’ve got the ick.

I’ll just buy new even if I had to pay in instalments and wait longer throwing a throw over my current one.

Chocolatemoosecups · 01/10/2025 17:34

Ok this has been cathartic!

Just looked and it’s £45 for the council to collect it so I will attack it with a sledgehammer at the weekend and take it to the tip in the car.

We are keeping the 2 seater from the same set so its legacy will live on.

Can you try some local charities that provide youth clubs or clubs for disabled kids?

whatevenwasthat · 01/10/2025 17:37

Are you on Facebook? If so, see if you have a local “C.R.A.P” page. It’s where people list stuff they want to give away for free. You just need to specify collection only.

dailyconniptions · 01/10/2025 17:41

Freecycle. Someone will snap your hand off for it.

sonjadog · 01/10/2025 17:41

I feel your pain. I tried to get rid of a sofa when I moved from a house to a flat and didn't have room for it. It was a nice sofa, comfy, looked good. I couldn't give it away, no charity would pick it up. Apparently there is very little market for used sofas. Eventually I had to pay for someone to come and take it to the dump to me.

Anywherebuthere · 01/10/2025 17:44

Transport and getting it into the room are usually an issue.

Justsewsew · 01/10/2025 17:45

We chopped an old leather sofa up because we couldn't get it back out if the house (we had to have the window removed to get it in). I'm cross now I didn't think to save the leather for sewing projects. If you can cut that off along the seams it might be desirable for someone who sews.

RosyDawn · 01/10/2025 17:49

If you’re going to smash it up maybe someone would take just the leather? Better than it all going into landfill surely.

Pop it on as something good for upcycling projects.

Ponderingwindow · 01/10/2025 17:52

Soft furniture second hand scares me from a bedbug perspective. It’s just not worth the risk.

3luckystars · 01/10/2025 17:54

But you don’t want it either??

From recent experience, if it’s a solid, sturdy sofa then you’ll probably have better luck with a chainsaw.

pizzaHeart · 01/10/2025 17:54

Pinkmagic1 · 01/10/2025 16:13

I think it's definitely a logistical thing. Not many people have the means to collect one.

we chopped our old one up 😢

Bundleflower · 01/10/2025 17:59

OP, please don’t be a spoilt sport. Under the Freedom of Information Act, we NEED to see the sofa to be able to judge. 😄

TulipCat · 01/10/2025 18:07

PersephoneSmith · 01/10/2025 17:13

You are suffering from waster's guilt, you don't want it, but you want someone else to want it because you know that it has life left in it and you don't really need a new sofa.

Get over yourself. Keep the sofa because it is still good enough to use, or throw it away.

This is so true. I often see posts on my local Nextdoor trying to guilt-trip people by saying something like "Seems a shame to waste it. Collection today otherwise I'll have to take it to the tip on Tuesday". Well no, if you don't want it to go to waste you could just keep it and use it!

Check your council's website re furniture . Ours will not accept broken up sofas \ chairs unless they are completely wrapped up .

No.. we all do.

Put a post that says “can arrange delivery for a small fee” and then use anyvan.com to give them a quote.

I've had terrible experiences with anyvan!

www.shiply.com is much better as you get competitive bids on the price and can see the review feedback from each delivery company.

Well if you are demolishing it anyway. Show us

MsJinks · 01/10/2025 18:20

Try looking at Re-Use online - they redistribute furniture to those struggling to afford it.
Not saying they will have a place near you, but may be worth a shot rather than tipping it?
It is hard to get furniture into charity shops or given away now - people expect far too much for free, and charities have learned what doesn’t sell I guess. Plus side is there must be many people donating so most stuff is reused?
