Interesting that a recent channel 4 news segment was about a new wave of " auditors " i have been watching them for about five years, so not new. I know the uk was late to the party ,as first ammendment auditors across the pond have been around for about 10. Just wondered anyone on here watches...and who they watch ??
AIBU = Never heard of them
YANBU = watch them, I know who they are.

Yes i don’t think he’s ever used a drone but he’s certainly done hand held filming/auditing and gets into arguements about his legal right to film anyone/anything from a public space.

I think that's just vlogging. I haven't seen his downloads recently. Not my cup of tea.

I only came across these because of the protests

as you are particularly interested in drones, I should say I didn't even know that was happening until last week. So my teply is probably not any use to you. I have long thought that we needed to address the drone issue and we even had one around our development over the summer! It was only seen once, but everyone freaked out and I don't blame them. Hopefully that one was just a kid.

I didn't know that these "auditors" had been harassing people for ages, I only found out last week

what are the drone people trying to achieve?

I would say there is a divide. Even between "responsible" citizen journalists and these self styled auditors. there's probably a sliding scale of how responsible they are as well. I think some of them are due in court.

I think there's a massive difference between filming a protest in a responsible way and between going onto private property and just trying to have a nose.

It's been a puzzle for me morally because I can see why they were trying to expose some of the things they were trying to expose

Another massive issue for privacy laws to try and tackle. There's been other threads on this, but I tried campaigning for better privacy laws some years ago and everyone thought I was nuts including my MP

So I wonder if these "auditors" might actually prompt some action. it's like people can't think ahead.

Something that’s been happening for about 10 years isn’t new new…….but is a long way off from being old. Also I would argue it’s only become more well known in the last couple of years. ie gaining viewers, popularity. Ergo “a new trend” for most people who hear of it.

They turn up at my work sometimes and make a nuisance of themselves. Utterly pointless waste of their time (because there is nothing interesting to film) and the staff who have to deal with them. Given the nature of my employer…. That means it’s people’s council tax they are wasting.

I watch a lot of weird and wonderful docs on YouTube. Never auditors. What’s the point?

Okiedokie123 · 30/09/2025 19:10

Why do you watch them OP? Why are they in your opinion interesting?

GlastoNinja · 30/09/2025 19:10

I’d love for you to get an answer to that @Okiedokie123 but it doesn’t seem to be forthcoming

I think it's important to document how things are changing. Landscapes and people's attitude to someone holding a camera. First photo was taken about 100 years ago, and I like seeing how they dressed the houses, streets. When I was young anyone took a photo I was desperate to be in it !! I find it odd in a world of 4k everybody wants privacy, in a world ever move you make is documented. Auditors are filming. Am interested.

He has definitely described himself as an auditor in the last. A drone is just one method of auditing, doesn’t have to use a drone for it to still be auditing.

CarefullyCuratedFurniture · 30/09/2025 19:22

The "auditors" are very tiresome people. I am actually in one of their silly little videos (from MANY years ago) and am still not very happy about it! Someone came and filmed at my workplace, including footage of my colleagues going in and out, and acted like a dick when he was required to leave. They're not citizen journalists, they're wankers.

Well there are laws already. There is no privicy in public. Its quite clear. People should have the right to address the government by protest. Who cares if its the BBC documenting it, or Dave from Plymouth. Not so much bothered about the documenting of protests, but I guess it falls in line with documenting history.

In people getting in the way? Criticizing things they don't understand? Obstructing emergency services? These aren't people trying to document a changing landscape, they're annoying people for clicks.

Probably a public path outside of the property, and the un owned airspace above
PINAC

Isn't that the point tho ? They don't have to deal with them, it's not illegal. I don't watch those kind of audits, but I have seen them. If they didn't engage as no crime no video??? The ones I have seen, its almost like they want the air time. Yes your correct it's not a new thing, but as in OP channel 4 think it is.

Yes, getting in the way of police and ambulance workers trying to do their jobs. Because "we have a right to film, we have a right to document what you're doing" regardless of people's rights, or how dealing with these ignorant pricks slows response times. Stepping over cordons because "I'm a citizen journalist", or one I've personally witnessed, actually leaning over paramedics giving CPR to a drowning victim. They are not journalists, they are not documenting anything, they are not trying to protect the public purse or public good. They are scum.

That’s a very odd / manipulative way to describe what these people are doing, which is deliberately cause distress, disorder, irritation to people going about their day to day life. You want to document how things are changing? Become a photo journalist, not one of these cockroaches.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 30/09/2025 19:53

Talking about auditors of police etc.

EmeraldRoulette · 30/09/2025 19:55

@Shudahaddogs you are correct, currently there is absolutely no privacy law

I do think there should be one. Otherwise there is nothing to stop anyone just filming somebody in the supermarket, on a train etc just because they fancied it. Not because some kind of incident was occurring.

There must be a point where you feel it escalates into harassment?

I'm still not 100% clear what you're watching, but it sounds like you aren't watching videos of people being harassed, basically. Which is obviously good.

What else are these people "auditing"?

Shudahaddogs · 30/09/2025 19:56

APC303 · 30/09/2025 19:41

Obnoxious imbeciles with nothing else going on in their lives.

Bryant and May had a matchstick factory in 1888, photos were taken of employees jaws. Phossy jaw they called it. Photos were taken. Do you think the people who took the photos were called "obnoxious imbeciles with nothing going on in their lives ?" I think they were documenting history.
