Dogfishing!!!

Dogsarethenewtigersgrrrrrrrr · 30/09/2025 08:23

Heard a new one yesterday. Dogfishing. Apparently it's men posting pictures on their dating profiles with dogs that aren't theirs to gain likes and show that they are a "nice" guy. To be clear, this isn't a pic with their dog to let you know they have one-rather a borrowed dog as a tactic.

I mean I know there's all sorts of games people play to get more swipes, but posing with someone else's dog to look like that kind of person... Really does seem a bit bonkers to me.

Guess I'm just tired with how many ploys are used on these apps now.

It’s quite funny, I have just seen the same thing happen on Hudson and Rex 🤣

SeaAndStars · 30/09/2025 09:11

I suppose it's better than posing with someone else's fish.

BauhausOfEliott · 30/09/2025 09:35

Not the end of the world, is it? It’s literally just a conversation starter.

‘Cute dog! Is he yours?’
‘Sadly not, he’s my sister’s. I’d love a dog but I’m out at work all day. How about you?’

It’s not some kind of big deception FFS.

TotallyUnapologeticOmnivore · 30/09/2025 09:46

If I did online dating, I'd be swiping left on anyone pictured with a dog.

Well, exactly - so if a man is looking for the sort of person who likes dogs, it’s a useful way of filtering out some women who are unlikely to be their type.

I don’t have a dog but I wouldn’t want to date a man who disliked them, so if I was doing online dating I might well include one of my (many!) pictures of me with other people’s dogs. Actually one of my favourite photos of me is one of me with my niece’s dog when I was looking after him for her.

I really don’t think it’s the sinister ploy the OP implies it to be!

Ablondiebutagoody · 30/09/2025 09:54

Why would anyone think that a stinking dog around the house is attractive?

Getmeoutofhereeee · 30/09/2025 10:27

LOL - I have at least two friends who have pics with my dog on their dating profiles! One male, the other female. I don't think it was calculated on their part - just happened to be a nice picture with a cute dog - but who knows...

Mum2twoandacockapoo · 30/09/2025 10:30

Tbh dogs are the new fish and don’t get me started on men who pose with kids … always their nieces and nephews . I don’t get it , I wouldn’t want my children plastered all over dating sites so least it’s better than that .. and some dogs are cuter than some kids 🤣🤣 (only joking … sort of lol )

TheAmusedQuail · 30/09/2025 10:33

I'd swipe right on them if I liked the look of the dog.

So there is a difference between I like this picture of me with a dog versus people who are using pictures to gain more likes. The idea of dogfishing is that these are men who don't have dogs or strong feelings either way, but are using the picture to capture interest and to appear to be a particular type of person.

I wonder why they aren’t borrowing cats, is it because they think dogs are more ‘manly’ than cats 🤔

LoveSandbanks · 30/09/2025 10:38

I’m not in the dating game, but if I were, this would totally catch me out. I love dogs!

Mum2twoandacockapoo · 30/09/2025 10:40

I have realised since having a very cute cockapoo how many men out there adore dogs . My dog gets a lot more attention from men than women . So this could actually be a thing due to having a nation of male dog lovers. Women probably just see hard work lol . Even just yesterday a man crossed the road to come talk to my dog and a bus driver behind our car was smiling at him on Sunday coz he had his head out the window.
I would find a man who loves my dog a big softy and it would make me like him more so it does work as long as he genuinely does like them and not just borrows a dog for attention .

Mauvehoodie · 30/09/2025 11:06

I don't think I'd get too worked up about this one. Assuming they are a dog person rather than someone who hates them. I thought it was going to be sort of ploy to post pictures of you looking very much NOT at your best to make it a nice surprise on actually meeting (sort of the opposite of catfishing!).

Twinklewonderkins · 30/09/2025 11:21

One of my friends had a work colleague he wasn’t close to randomly show up at his house while he was on paternity leave and asked for lots of pictures with his baby.
Friend asked why the sudden interest and WC said “oh it’s for my Tinder!”
He then showed friend pics he’d taken with someone else’s motorbike and Jack Russell puppy..

Bigneonsign · 30/09/2025 11:51

Marking my place while I find a video this reminded me of!

Bigneonsign · 30/09/2025 11:52

Here you go. It's a YouTube video

CalzoneOnLegs · 30/09/2025 12:01

@Bigneonsign

The rustic inviting looking cuddly jumper and the toy on top of the dog 🤣🤣🤣

UpDownAllAround1 · 30/09/2025 12:02

I did that. Worked

I think this is it. I want photos to be an insight into your personality. If you ride motorbikes, have a spaniel and work with orphans - great.

When you haven't sat on a motorbike for 10 years, it's your mates dog and your sisters baby because posting a picture representative of your life; something like playing Xbox in your pants with a plate of cheesy nachos isn't going to get you laid feels like another way men have found to waste my time.

@Dogsarethenewtigersgrrrrrrrr
the dogfish and I now work for the same hospital trust (we didn’t then) and friend has moved on.
I occasionally see the df in the canteen or meetings (he’s distinctive looking with fairly unusual name is deffo him)
I always want to ask how the dating is going (but don’t ofc)

Endofyear · 30/09/2025 15:02

Seems a bit pointless as if you start dating them, you're soon going to realise he doesn't have a dog! 😂

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 30/09/2025 15:40

CalzoneOnLegs · 30/09/2025 10:36

I wonder why they aren’t borrowing cats, is it because they think dogs are more ‘manly’ than cats 🤔

Because dogs looks at everyone with an expression of "Look at this human, he's literally the best human ever", whereas cats give off an expression of "This person is worth literally nothing. In fact, less than nothing, I shouldn't be forced to share a photo with him"

Who wants that in their dating profile?

NoMoreHotHols · 30/09/2025 15:48

It’d have the opposite effect from me so no issues.
