To think Starmer calling Refom and its supporters ‘racist’ is politically suicidal?

SpottyAardvark · 28/09/2025 20:08

Starmer has called Reform’s policy of ending indefinite right to remain for non-EU immigrants ‘immoral’ & ‘racist’. Reform supporters, and people who are considering voting for Reform because of their concerns about immigration, will inevitably think the Prime Minister is calling them immoral racists, too. And that will infuriate millions of voters.

I understand that it’s Labour’s conference this week and because he is under a lot of political pressure from his own side, Starmer believes he has to throw some red meat to his party. That’s politics. But Starmer has obviously forgotten what happened to Hillary Clinton when she described Trump voters as ‘deplorable’. That didn’t work out well for her, did it?

YABU = Starmer is right. Reform and its supporters are racists and he should call it out.

YANBU = Starmer has just committed political suicide by falling into Farage’s trap and he has alienated working class voters.

Laura Kuenssberg not challenging the lie from Starmer claiming that Reform were planning to deport people.

Their own previous report stated that Farage was proposing to withdraw indefinite leave to remain and people can apply for visas if they haven’t already applied for citizenship. If they can’t fulfil the visa requirements, like they couldn’t find a job and are claiming benefits then they need to move elsewhere where they can find work.

Reform has clearly got Labour rattled.

Reform on track to win the next election 😂😂😂

The cunty old grifter's arse would fall out if he got anywhere near real power he's not interested in running the country whatsoever

Polling suggests they are, which is the reason Starmer really should be thinking carefully about what message he’s sending potential voters.

Lonelycrab · 28/09/2025 20:32

There aren’t any racist reform supporters at all are there. And a policy that clearly will target non white British people (which it will) can’t possibly be racist can it.

Here's what was actually said. NB this was specifically about the Reform policy of scrapping indefinite leave to remain. Not about other immigration policies.

Keir Starmer calls Reform migrant policy 'racist' and 'immoral'
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cj6xdw1dg4zo

Kuenssberg: Do you think it's a racist policy?

Starmer: I do think it's a racist policy, I do think it's immoral, it needs to be called out for what it is.

Kuenssberg: And do you think that Reform UK is trying to appeal to racists?

Starmer: No. I think there are plenty of people who either vote Reform or are thinking of voting Reform who are frustrated. They had 14 years of failure under the Conservatives. They want us to change things – they may have voted Labour a year ago – and they want the change to come more quickly.

Edited

I agree that it's morally questionable to do this but I don't see what is racist about it. The proposed policy does not distinguish between people of different races.

It's also a luxury belief, saying that this policy is immoral. It's easy to take a moralistic stance on these questions when you have nothing to lose personally. It's easy to give away other people's communities because it's morally right to do so.

Personally I think Reform are deeply incompetent and I would never vote for them, but I also don't like people throwing the word 'racist' around.

OonaStubbs · 28/09/2025 20:33

The "red wall" is a lost cause. Those people are voting Reform. Where Labour can win is in the cities with the young, diverse and educated who will NEVER vote for Farage. There's no point chasing the "gammon vote". Those people are the past, the urban young are the future.

Coffeetime25 · 28/09/2025 20:33

this is prob the only thing I agree with starmer on they are racist and immoral he just calling a spade a spade there

Farage always reminds me of the Fox News slogan on The Simpsons:

"Not racist, but #1 with racists "

Had enough of ..?

Everything. A system that hates them. A massive state that helps itself to nearly half of people's earnings. Not being able to express what they really think in case they lose their livelihoods. Or worse, getting killed. It was two weeks ago that Charlie Kirk was assassinated just for speaking. Calling people racists or Nazis doesn't work anymore.

Me too.

The mental gymnastics people will do to convince themselves the polls and political forecasts are somehow grossly mistaken reminds me of the denial the Titanic crew were in.

Gettingbysomehow · 28/09/2025 20:36

It's becsuse of this arrogant tosser that we'll probably get fascists in next time.
He went straight for the elderly and disabled almost as soon as he got in, his deputy prime minister had to resign for tax evasion, he himself was caught accepting expensive "gifts". He's done bugger all since he got in and he's managed to deport three illegal immigrants who didn't want to stay anyway.
Now he's doing a Gordon Brown and slinging rascist slurs at everyone.
The country is ripe for Brexit mark 2....Farage.

Less immigration. Easing up the housing crisis. Less air pollution. Better food security. A lower flood risk. Less greenfield land lost to concrete jungle housing estates. Better community cohesion. Less pressure on infrastructure, schools and hospitals. Fewer men arriving unvetted from deeply misogynistic countries which are terror risks to the UK.

I see the lefties are out this evening. So every single person who votes Reform are racist? No wonder Labour are doing so badly. Starmer is a massive let down. He changes with the wind and he and his ridiculous cabinet are making such a mess. No plans, after 14 years in opposition. Shame on them

Voters who will never vote for him because they think multi millionaire man of the people Nigel Farage is on their side?

Absentosaur · 28/09/2025 20:37

Yep. Starmer is an idiot. He’s done the worst thing he could’ve done. How to lose voters and alienate people. 101. Handing the election to Reform on a plate, as things stand. Prick. Idiotic.

If only he'd said that, eh?

Then you wouldn't have to make shit up.
