People who can afford all the things getting it for free!

I know I am just jealous but does it wind anyone else up when you see celebs being gifted free products, holidays, meals etc?

Doesn't sit right the people who can afford it get if for free and then try and sell it to the people who can't afford it!

I know I am being unreasonable but just wondered if it bugged anyone else!

It's just the advertising business. George Clooney gets Omega watches and Nespresso machines plus some money as he is a known celebrity. Anyone who played Bond got Omega. Eric Clapton is a Rolex Ambassador and consequently gets free watches (also guitars and eqpt) but was buying their products years ago.

Yes and when top management at a company get all the perks, like private health care, company cars, moving packages etc, alongside their huge salaries. When they are the ones who could afford this stuff for themselves.

Top management have most probably worked hard for those ‘perks’ which by the way, they have to pay tax on.

I’m not top management, but am in a senior role. I’ve worked real hard to get to this position. I get a company car because I travel to different sites as part of my job. I get a bonus each year (if I make a difference to the company profits) and I get private health care. I pay 40% tax on all of these - they are not ‘freebies’.

Those are not freebies, they are part of the compensation package. Corporate managers and boards use them to attract and retain candidates who they believe will do the best job for the company.

What really annoys me is when the newspapers call Kate Middleton ‘thrifty’ for ‘recycling’ a £5000 coat that she wore once 4 years ago 🙄 If I had a £5k coat I’d wear it daily, and possibly sleep in it, just to get my money’s worth 😂

realsavagelike · 28/09/2025 21:38

@Purpleturtle45 love your user name! Reading girl? The old PT or the 'new' (30 years new!) one?

AmyDuPlantier · 28/09/2025 22:06

It’s just a marketing tool; not any different to paying celebs money to be in their adverts.

I am a very tiny influencer type and I have a big stock of clothes I got for free, but I do put in the time and effort to promote it. I don’t get paid for it, it’s a trade-off between two small businesses really.

Laura95167 · 28/09/2025 22:08

Its not free.. its advertising

She won't have paid for it. Prob gifted or sold to her for a nominal sum but then she could claim on expenses (assuming they pay tax!!!)

rwalker · 28/09/2025 22:30

It’s just basic advertising there getting goods instead of of cash to promote bit

clipboardz · 28/09/2025 22:30

I think a celebrity advertising say a Rolex when they actually wear them isn't so much of an issue. It's the fake crap eg an influencer racing about an anti ageing serum when they are 20 or full of botox or loving their Amazon handbag when they normally wear nothing other than Bottega. Having said that f followers are naive enough to believe it then what can you do.

Gnarab24 · 28/09/2025 22:53

Literally just discussing this with my very wealthy cousin who gets invited to all kinds of freebie expensive weekends and events so salespeople can nosh him off and get him to spend more money on their shit.

Breadandsticks · 28/09/2025 23:33

You know, social media and the internet has made it possible for all of us to have a piece of the pie, and you shouldn’t feel too upset about people recieving freebies because a percentage of people worked they way up to that position. And what I have learned is that people that have lots of money can be pretty frugal and they end up finding ways to save money and getting freebies or their monies worth - which is probably how they stay “rich”. For instance I know a millionaire who worked their way up over the decades. She needed to fit out one of her offices with carpet and she was asking me (a working woman who is just about living pay check to pay check) if she knew anyone that could give her a good deal or do it as some sort of exchange.

It is a mindset. I know people that have grown their social media profiles and are seen as micro influencers and now they do get freebies and fly out to amazing places, get sent festival or event tickets for free - but I see it as they earned it and they worked towards that lifestyle.

It’s not rubbing it in peoples faces - it’s living your life in the limelight

I don't agree with it, but I see why this happens. A good director can make or break the company so companies will pay £££ to get the best, and that means the big cheeses can influence their package. Plus as it becomes the norm they will expect it and go elsewhere if the first company doesn't offer perks and benefits like PHI. Totally unfair bit just how the cookie crumbles.

Tangerinetortoise · 29/09/2025 00:47

Not this specifically, but I also get angry about economic inequality on a regular basis.

I know there are so many factors and variables to success, but I often see that it’s the charismatic people who, on the whole, do really well for themselves. My cousin has the gift of the gab and has done 10x better than me career wise, despite me working a lot lot harder.

Pryceosh1987 · 29/09/2025 00:57

It doesnt bother me. Celebrities are treated like royalty in this world, but i am content with my life. We must be willing to give sometimes without getting anything in return.

Can what? 😳

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 29/09/2025 06:54

This really annoys me and more so when those people are, in theory, socially aware. I was irritated when Stacey Dooley kept IG’ing #gifted at various luxury trips when I would have expected her to recognise how that would look.

I know someone else famous will get the benefit if she doesn’t (and it’s never ever going to go to someone who a company can’t get any marketing from) but I view people who take the freebie and publicise on their socials as a let down.

Not literally.

scalt · 29/09/2025 07:28

MPs, with their extremely generous expenses, alongside their ever-increasing salaries. And they didn't take a 20% pay cut in 2020, while condemning millions of people to this.

Toadstoollover · 29/09/2025 07:30

What pisses me off is the lies. Influencers one week saying how this skincare product is the best ever and they’ve used it for years yet the next week saying the same about something else.

It’s the same with clothes. They wear them, rave about them but never to be seen again. The freebies that they supposedly love end up on vinted so they make more money.

The difference with celebs abs influencers being gifted is that we all know that a celebs lifestyle is unattainable. We aspire to it but know it’s not realistic. Influencers sell themselves as being relatable and just like us.

It encourages fast fashion. How many influencers do hauls most weeks. No one needs that amount of clothes. People are buying into this crap and buying more stuff than they need.

DaisyChain505 · 29/09/2025 07:37

If people stopped following these “influencers” they wouldn’t get the freebies. Vote with your fingers and unfollow them.

unsync · 29/09/2025 07:41

It's always been like this, its just the medium that has changed. Did your mother not tell you as a child that life is not fair?

There's nothing you can do about it apart from boycott, so don't waste time and energy thinking about it. It's not worth it and from your posts@Purpleturtle45, it seems to be having an impact on your MH. It's pointless giving headspace to it imo.

slippedawaylikeabottleofwine · 29/09/2025 07:42

Personally I don’t care. If you want to be an influencer, go start a social media page, and wait and see what you get gifted

Those things are part of their overall remuneration packages. It's usually more tax efficient.

HeartbrokenCatMum · 29/09/2025 07:46

Yep people with money get all the perks. Save money by paying all at once, free shit, earn interest, expenses etc
