People who can afford all the things getting it for free!

I know I am just jealous but does it wind anyone else up when you see celebs being gifted free products, holidays, meals etc?

Doesn't sit right the people who can afford it get if for free and then try and sell it to the people who can't afford it!

I know I am being unreasonable but just wondered if it bugged anyone else!

From a company’s pov it’s just an advertising cost, cheaper and more effective than running a bill board campaign.

Personally I value my privacy and my integrity very, very highly and I would absolutely hate to have to work as an influencer. The ethics can be very murky.

Underblankie · 28/09/2025 16:21

The one that infuriates me is when they encourage people to complete surveys claiming that they’ve earned £££ when it pays pennies. The big money is from everyone using the link you shared.

Or the furniture flippers who made £££ flipping an old dresser they picked up at the charity shop for a tenner, who don’t make it clear what percentage of their profit came from brand advertising.

Skybluepinky · 28/09/2025 16:25

It’s always been that way, if you don’t like it delete sm, or just do what a normal person what and just accept it.

Tink3rbell30 · 28/09/2025 16:39

Agreed. And I don't think it's good business really. For example the P Louise £250 advent calender has been sent for free to countless "influencers". It has put me right off so I definitely won't be paying for it.

Bellyblueboy · 28/09/2025 16:40

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 28/09/2025 15:25

I boycott any brands who gift themselves to influencers.

Why? Why do you are?

landlordhell · 28/09/2025 16:41

I agree. I follow a couple of influencers but skip all the product bits, I just like watching people’s lives not the selling.

I know, I can’t imagine letting the general public see inside my house and all my comings and goings. Must be an effort to have to keep thinking of stuff to post. I know someone who has made it quite big in this field and she was soooo shy as a child/ teen but so confident behind a camera. Good for her!

GarlicPint · 28/09/2025 16:46

nomas · 28/09/2025 15:35

Money begets money.

Ain't that the truth. Back when I had money, I was always getting stuff for free and huge discounts. Banks gave me full-service accounts and waived the fees, restaurants gave me cocktails, when I bought cosmetics I got half a dozen samples as well, my holidays got upgraded, all sorts of things! I even got a few free haircuts from actual famous stylists.

I wasn't famous or anything. This is just how businesses butter up customers they want to keep. As I plummeted back down to skint, it was hard not to feel miffed that not only would nobody give me stuff now I really needed it, the essentials now cost more.

It's not a fair world, OP, and we know this - but YA definitely NBU!

I know they are advertising stuff, obviously. And I know celebrities have always advertised stuff and this is just a sign of the times. I think it's just the fact it's on their stories and almost just merges in with their personal content as well. I know they have to put 'ad' but it's frustrating seeing a millionaire celebrity selling a holiday for thousands of pounds a night they got for free, to people who in all likelihood will never be able to afford it. Just seems like rubbing people's faces in it.

What’s the difference between that and a holiday company advertising between episode of come dine with me??

SalamiSammich · 28/09/2025 16:49

In the nicest possible way though, I don't really care where you go on holiday so why would a company pay to send you?

And to be slightly blunter, if you can't afford it, chances are you aren't going to fit in there or have friends who will feel inspired to spend money go. That applies to us all. I can't afford e.g. a ski holiday so I can't look the part to promote it nor would anyone be inspired by me going to go themselves.

I think it blurs the lines when it's on the same account that they post their personal stuff and family life on!

Yes, I get that. It's like the difference between ad breaks in the movie and product placement on the sets.

Purpleturtle45 · 28/09/2025 16:53

Did anyone watch the Molly Mae show where she went through a Costa (or similar) drive thru ana when she got the window the staff member said 'oh if I had known it was for you I wouldn't have charged you!'. Wtf? I think she can afford latte! To be fair, Molly did say she wouldn't have wanted it for free. It's just all a bit sneaky imo!

Yanbu. I boycott brands that gift to influencers, obviously the product is crap if they need to give it to people to sell to poorer people.

This is silly. I mean, it’s fair enough to boycott if you are against the model of advertising, but plenty of decent brands do this. You wouldn’t say “it’s obviously a shit product if they need to pay a celeb to advertise it on tv” if you were talking about a traditional tv ad campaign. Hardly anyone watches tv adverts anymore, influencers are the way to get the most eyes on something. And sometimes, for the times they just send it out and hope the person posts about it, all it costs is the cost of the product, plus postage. And even if you pay the influencer, they generally still film it themselves in their house, so you’re saving money on all the background stuff that would go into a “proper” advert, and not paying ITV/Channel 4 etc to air it.

ainsleysanob · 28/09/2025 17:02

DashboardConfession · 28/09/2025 16:11

But the influencer is supposed to (and paid to) go and do a little cheerful video about "going to get measured as a back to school tradition" and then talk about how long they'll last and their fit promise etc etc.
It's not just supposed to make people think Clarks is run by nice people who donated some shoes. That sort of stuff is managed by a Social and Corporate Responsibility team versus the paid marketing budget.

And yet, before the advent of social media influencers, I’d hazard a guess that the vast majority of us know that Clark’s do school shoes, word of mouth from families members would tell us that they lasted (which they don’t!)! I and anyone with brain cells don’t need to see Buzz have his feet measured to convince us and I’m sure as shit not going to believe how well a shoe lasts from the mouths of someone being paid to say so! It’s ‘advertising’ to the hard of thinking. Show me on Social Media that they are providing to people who need it ie socially responsible and I’m much more likely to consider them.

Lots of advertising is stuff people already know though. The big supermarkets always advertise, as if we’d forgotten Tesco sold food.

I'm on a roll now......

The celebs that do a post saying 'looking for recommendations for someone that would be able to replace all the windows in my house as part of a renovation'......

I.e. Who is going to volunteer to do it for free for me? 🤢

Honestly, the best thing you can do is unfollow these grifters. Don’t watch their stories, especially until the end so they get their revenues. Don’t click any of their links, don’t interact with their posts, don’t answer their inane questions which are designed purely to boost engagement so they can try to land further grift deals ‘let me know what YOU guys are having for dinner, let me know if you’d like the link’ - Nope.

Maybe if we all ignore them, it will die off. They’re a scourge. And don’t even mention the ones who’ve sold off their children’s childhood for free stuff and likes.

Yes!

Joe Wicks getting gifted a £8000 weekend stay for him and 23 of his mates at Bainland was the last one to piss me off.

Yes and when top management at a company get all the perks, like private health care, company cars, moving packages etc, alongside their huge salaries. When they are the ones who could afford this stuff for themselves.

The idea is that if the company provide healthcare, you aren’t going to be missing work for appointments or going off sick because you can get appointments at more convenient times or get your bad back treated quickly. They provide company car so you can’t argue that you can’t get to work because your (old/badly maintained) car broke down. They get a moving package because otherwise they will get a job in a more attractive location. These things are only cost effective to provide at a level where there are not 100+ possible applicants for every job and/or where the employees hourly rate is very high so time not spent working costs the company a lot more - i.e. the higher management levels.

LOL if someone's on £100k it's up to them to get themselves a decent car with that £100k. These packages aren't for practical reasons because the poor dears need help, it just makes sense just tax wise.

But yeah money begets money, always has. Look at the bloody royals. For eg.
