some Michelle Mone-style labour crony will make billions from the digital ID

Which will make all our lives worse and won't reduce immigration crime in the slightest. The main reason for immigration crime ongoing is police and Border Force refusal to take action about known criminals.

Nothing will stop guys sharing an ID as they do in other countries.

It will create extra incentive to steal identities from ordinary people (perhaps with violence/kidnap).

Meanwhile this is billions the NHS and schools won't see.

Labour won't see election again in my lifetime.

No matter who is in power this cronyism happens unfortunately.
The rich get richer .
We get poorer.
And on it goes.
It's depressing.

I fervently hope that the UK track record on government IT means that this won’t be in place by the time of the next general election

I strongly expect you'll get your wish, @Carpaltoenail, especially if it's correct that the real purpose here is to out-Farage Nigel with a few tasty headlines

The rest can probably be left to byzantine committee structures, general incompetence and the involvement of those whose only real interest is to make a quick buck with no expectation at all of accountability

You forgot the fact that there must be zero danger of anyone being blamed.

I did mention "no expectation at all of accountability", Serendipity Jane, but yes it's a fair point

Like others I'm still waiting to hear what government projects have come in on time, on budget, without obvious cronies involved and which work properly, but suspect we'll be waiting a long time

Oh, and I've just discovered there's apparently a "Government Efficiency Framework" in place, which seems richly amusing: www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-government-efficiency-framework/the-government-efficiency-framework

muddyford · 28/09/2025 18:08

It looks as though Tony Blair's son owns the company that will get the contract for this. £100 billion!

That generally only happens where there is a war on. Tends to focus the minds, apparently.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 28/09/2025 18:12

What’s Jeremy corbyns opinion on ID cards? Anyone aware?

Aware or care ?

No idea about the former and put me down for the latter.

I know, surprisingly cheap.

I guess it's a bit of mates rates.

I saw a conspiracy theory on tiktok that Euan Blair (tony's son) who owns Multiverse (which was in financial trouble earlier this year) will get the contract for these digital IDs

Not sure how true it is, cant find a single online source, so have taken it with a pinch of salt, but it wouldnt surprise me 😪😪

Thought it was going to be Tony himself but I suppose now he wants to be King in or around Gaza he might be spread a little thin.

I though it was Larry Ellison he favoured last time?

Though perhaps his son's company wasn't up and running back then ... ?

Are you aware that with the exception of Denmark, we are the only country in Europe that doesn't already have this? Grow up and stop scaremongering.

Really?

Every single country in Europe apart from Denmark have compulsory digital ID apps?

angelos02 · 28/09/2025 18:20

If the government can afford this, I assume they have enough money to not have to increase income tax. Excellent news.

Oracles good name is tied up with £100 million pound failed deal with Birmingham City Council.

Still can't actually produce an audit yet.

Nobody likes this idea apart from Starmer. Many in Labour also oppose it. Hence it will be pushed through regardless

You're right, SerendipityJane, I'd forgotten they were involved in that ... so I suppose that's another one which qualifies for neither on budget, on time or working properly Hmm

BTW for those who asked I'm pretty sure Jeremy Corbyn was strongly opposed to ID cards

Please can you point me to the information that confirms Euan Blair’s company will be awarded the contract?

Euan Blair’s current company is focussed on coaching/learning including apprenticeships using human and AI. Doesn't seem relevant to producing IT systems for ID.

Oh good. I’ll vote for his party. Though if a tactical vote was required I’m not sure what I’d do.

I was sent a link to Twitter. From someone who checks sources carefully. But no idea if it's true, which is why I phrased my post in the way I did

He’s against, as are the Lib Dems. Those for it are Starmer and his supporters.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 28/09/2025 19:02

Compulsory ID wasnt in the manifesto.

DervlaGlass · 28/09/2025 19:06

It appears to have come from nowhere but I believe it came from Tony Blair

It's not a solution to anything
