Which will make all our lives worse and won't reduce immigration crime in the slightest. The main reason for immigration crime ongoing is police and Border Force refusal to take action about known criminals.

Nothing will stop guys sharing an ID as they do in other countries.

It will create extra incentive to steal identities from ordinary people (perhaps with violence/kidnap).

Meanwhile this is billions the NHS and schools won't see.

Labour won't see election again in my lifetime.

Bit late then. I suppose you say the same on threads for other stuff, the ILR change for example. Don’t get angry etc

No, it's the insistence that "some crony" will make money from it.

That's not happened, why get angry about a hypothetical?

Seriously, step away from the Internet. You're stressing about nothing. Go and have a walk in nature and look at something real rather than consuming scaremongering conspiracy theories that are designed to scare you and reel you in so that you read more.

Why don’t you give your reasons for how you think it’s a good idea and why? Instead of belittling people’s concerns.

For your information I am concerned about this, but hardly angry or stressed.

WandChoosesTheWitch · 28/09/2025 13:48

Same applies to @randomchap, see my last post.

Tony Blair’s son…..

mumofoneAloneandwell · 28/09/2025 10:06

I saw a conspiracy theory on tiktok that Euan Blair (tony's son) who owns Multiverse (which was in financial trouble earlier this year) will get the contract for these digital IDs

Not sure how true it is, cant find a single online source, so have taken it with a pinch of salt, but it wouldnt surprise me 😪😪

The difference between a conspiracy and reality, is usually about 6-12 months, so only time will tell.

MO0N · 28/09/2025 14:22

If digital ID becomes mandatory then (by extension) owning a smartphone will become mandatory.
What they I do about people who don't want to have a smartphone?

Of course they will. Why else is it being pushed it’s not for my good or the U.K.

Could you link to a source about TB ‘s stance for this please.

sorry I know it’s the mail. But I like to use a variety of sources.

I think that until they can fix the dvla driving test booking system they shouldn’t start on any new crazy big projects. So many existing systems in government aren’t working properly. I don’t understand why we need id cards.

“In fact, then-Shadow Home Secretary David Davis, who is still the MP for Goole & Pocklington, said the obsession by Sir Tony would "actually weaken our security and cost at least £20billion".

@Pinkfluffypencilcase thanks very much, I will take a look. No worries about the DM article, I too like to watch/listen to/read a variety of sources. 😊

Are you aware that with the exception of Denmark, we are the only country in Europe that doesn't already have this? Grow up and stop scaremongering.

Probably why Kier wants it - seems more EU Reset than anti-illegal immigration.

It wouldn't be worth doing otherwise.

I mean the DVLA are probably 95% of the way there. They have pretty much the processes, and their infrastructure is dealing with about 42 million records, so a bump of maybe 50% isn't too onerous.

However why spend a few tens of millions when - as we know from Universal Credit - you can spunk (literally) untold sums of money into a black hole and have nobody notice ?

You'd be mad not too.

RealPerson · 28/09/2025 17:23

I want one. I can't get a passport or driving license currently. ID should be assigned to everyone automatically, not a privilige. Unfortunately I live in Scotland and our government is opposing it, probably due to popular opposition on social media

Carpaltoenail · 28/09/2025 17:25

I agree OP and I couldn’t loathe Starmer more. I fervently hope that the UK track record on government IT means that this won’t be in place by the time of the next general election, and that Labour gets comprehensively trounced.

crunchylamp · 28/09/2025 17:31

Thissickbeat · 28/09/2025 13:06

They can't even sort out the driving test booking IT nightmare. I have zero faith they can a) implement safe, functioning ID cards and b) they will make any difference. Cash in hand jobs and HMO's will tick over quite happily.

Very true.

Also remember how well the Covid pass worked? Oh gosh, it didn't, but how much did it cost?

The UK track record on any large project means this will cost 10x whatever is predicted and take 3x as long.

Hows that HS2 working out for you ?

And have they actually signed off Universal Credit yet ? (Hint: No).

I'm guessing we'll be talking about £5 billion for this plan. And paying about £20 billion It's supposed to go live 2029 ???? So will probably come on stream about 2035.

Experts in large UK government projects are free to contradict with their examples of projects that did come in on or under budget and by or before the target date.

(The project managers mantra: "Works, On time. On budget. Choose any two")

It's called experience, @randomchap ... if you can point me to any recent government initiative which has come in on time, on budget, without obvious cronies involved and which works properly I'd be interested to hear it

What they I do about people who don't want to have a smartphone?

And what do they do about those disabled who may be unable to use one, @MO0N?
I know they're usually ignored - or in the words of an MP of my aquaintance "not enough vote for government to care" - but I'm sick to death of every blasted thing being made reliant on IT which can be thoroughly exclusionary

SerendipityJane · 28/09/2025 17:36

Also remember how well the Covid pass worked? Oh gosh, it didn't, but how much did it cost?

If it didn't work, then it clearly didn't cost enough.

Blueglitterglasses · 28/09/2025 17:40

Surely it would be easier and cheaper for the government to make passports compulsory and reduce the cost of them

I strongly expect you'll get your wish, @Carpaltoenail, especially if it's correct that the real purpose here is to out-Farage Nigel with a few tasty headlines

The rest can probably be left to byzantine committee structures, general incompetence and the involvement of those whose only real interest is to make a quick buck with no expectation at all of accountability
