To ask my Mum if I can return one of my birthday gifts

Not a big deal but asking advice!
My mum bought me a new book for my birthday (among other things) I asked for a surprise book and it’s actually two books in one, however they are part of a series, smack bang in the middle and I don’t fancy reading the ones that came before. Should I tell her and ask if I can return it? Or should I say nothing? 📚

Of course you should ask her.

Ask her or depending on where it’s from just see if you can exchange it?

BookishBear · 26/09/2025 20:26

Thanks! I’ll ask her where it is from and try and exchange it. It’s not 100% my cup of tea (I haven’t read it though) It sounds a bit too romantic for my taste!

It’s a Colleen Hoover series. Has anyone read any of hers?

I would just pass it on to a friend without saying anything. It can feel like a bit of a snub if a gift gets returned but what you don't know can't hurt you.

It's just a book. Try reading it in, and if it really isn't your cup of tea, donate to a friend or charity shop. But I wouldn't mention it to your mum, no need.

You asked for a surprise, I think it would be rude to ask to return it. Not worth upsetting her over the cost of a oil

I have. The one I read was very filthy! Can't remember what it was called but it was good.
