To think most people have absolutely no business managing anyone?

Some people got promoted because they’re good at doing the job, not because they’re good with people, emotionally intelligent or able to lead. The result? Teams being micromanaged, unsupported or quietly burnt out while their manager coasts or causes chaos. I’m convinced that a lot of “workplace stress” is just people having to deal with unqualified or power-tripping managers.

AIBU to think most people should never have been put in charge of other people in the first place?

Ok so why don’t you start a thread about how much you hate your manager and how you don’t at all get on with him / her

GasPanic · 26/09/2025 12:50

I don't know about "most people" but management is definitely a skill, and is far too often a job people fall into by being good at their job as you say, and not necessarily being good at organising a team of others.

Part of the problem I think is that poor management is not really well addressed.

At least in this country.

This again?

What is actually wrong with you OP?

You really need to spend your time trying to work that out, rather than repeatedly starting the same thread over and over and over again 🙄

Exactly, another huge sweeping generalisation because OP is pissed off with their manager.

Yes some managers are shit, no its not all of them.

Perhaps you should try spending a little less time on Mumsnet if you genuinely think every thread on a shared topic must be from the same person. Just a thought. 😊

YANBU. I am a manager. Have done a bunch of trainings. But don't enjoy being a manager and don't have time to do a good job of managing as I also have doing stuff in my role.

Or maybe even actually working so doesn’t piss off manager!

But it is, isn’t it 🤭

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 26/09/2025 13:17

Yep. One of the main reasons people leave an otherwise decent job is the management. Part of being a team manager is managing people, not just the workload. Most rubbish managers are rubbish because of their method of managing people, ie micromanaging, pulling you into meetings, giving you work at the last minute and demanding you shift your focus entirely onto something rarely touched.

My line manager was promoted to replace a line manager who left. Someone else in the team was approached but they declined. That someone else has since reduced their hours so now they only work three days a week. I'm wondering if the reason they reduced their hours was for stress, and if so, was it stress caused by my current line manager? I'll let it remain a mystery because it's none of my business.

Either way, some managers are shite, some are decent, some are meh. Some were clearly promoted in error but they love the pay bump too much to handle being demoted.
