To say that boys are better at high standard maths

MellowRubyDreamer · 26/09/2025 00:47

My daughter is choosing her subjects for senior and her teacher is encouraging her to choose the hardest maths subject. Not in the UK. DD is good at maths at her girls' school but ultimately she will also be competing with the boys.

I am not saying boys are better at maths but they are better at high standard maths in proportion. Like for example in maths competition/olympiad the prizes are often dominated by boys. DD can choose as she pleases but I am just offering her perspective. She can do just as well but she might need to work harder. She thinks I am being sexist. AIBU?

Not a great way to encourage her, is it?

Do you think more boys win because parents of girls have little confidence in their ability, ultimately leading to to less girls taking higher maths… meaning competitions are dominated by boys because proportionately more take the subject at higher level?

This! 100 per cent . Safe with software engineering

OP, I really hope your post is a wind up, because it's so depressing if not. Previous posters have made excellent points, so I will just add that perhaps you should watch Hidden Figures with your daughter. Perhaps it will change your mind about women's mathematical abilities, and hopefully it will encourage your daughter at the same time, as you and your backwards, sexist attitude clearly won't.

Duckswaddle · 26/09/2025 07:05

Support your daughter, you twat.

TheBucketWomen · 26/09/2025 07:07

like sport there should be a separate ladies math class!

Evidence, please.

Nina1013 · 26/09/2025 07:10

I was better than any boys I ever met at maths, by a considerable margin. Last time I checked, I was female.

Complet · 26/09/2025 07:10

This is absolutely true. It’s because boys have the added advantage of using their penises as both a ruler and protractor. Girls are better at English as they can use their breasts as hand free book support. It’s just plain biology guys, and you can’t deny it.

Loloblue · 26/09/2025 07:11

Its attitudes like these that prevent young women from thinking they can do 'science stuff'. You're setting a terrible example and well
done to your daughter for calling you out.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 26/09/2025 07:12

There are a fair few odd threads around today. Feels like we’ve been invaded by Reddit pisstakers trying it on.

She gets emotional easily and sometimes gets upset when she can't solve something.

If you think that teenage boys don’t get emotional I would submit that you have never actually met a teenage boy.

But do tell us more about how the possession of a penis aids mathematics?

CountFucula · 26/09/2025 07:13

This… has to be a wind up?

Sharptonguedwoman · 26/09/2025 07:13

Boys don't have a bigger Maths muscle you know? Your daughter is correct, well done to her.

bluebettyy · 26/09/2025 07:13

Excellent trolling OP.

User37482 · 26/09/2025 07:14

DH did further maths and then onto physics degree, he would raise an eyebrow at the idea that girls just wouldn’t be able to manage. He sure as hell wouldn’t be telling DD she should worry about what the boys are doing. I think he would literally die of happiness if DD decided on maths. Just because a particular area is male dominated it doesn’t mean that women are not actually capable of competing in that area.

Jitterbuggs · 26/09/2025 07:15

Bullshit.

Work harder on not passing on your insecurities to your daughter.

Newsenmum · 26/09/2025 07:16

And maybe if more girls did maths in this country this wouldnt be the case.

And so what? She should do it. She might actually win lol.

Thortour · 26/09/2025 07:16

You can't possibly be serious. When you were typing this did you at any point pause and consider how ridiculous you sound?

Upstartled · 26/09/2025 07:16

Interesting perspective, what-three-names first-time poster.

Wind up, if not @MellowRubyDreamer
why do you think boys are better at maths?

curious79 · 26/09/2025 07:20

She’s not in competition with them though is she? It’s not like there is a first place. The whole class could get As

For decades now, girls in school have been avoiding science and maths because they get told they’re not as good as boys, but based on no particular evidence

This is the attitude female scientists have been fighting for hundreds of years. For it to come out of a mother’s mouth is shameful. You need to educate yourselves on (a) the myriad of capable female scientists and mathematicians (b) the way historically society has tried to dim their light or prevent their contribution

SumUp · 26/09/2025 07:21

Facts / statistics do not support your sexist assertion.

InMyOpenOnion · 26/09/2025 07:21

You need to separate the overarching trend from your specific child. Yes, overall boys outperform girls at maths in general but that's mainly because it tends to appeal more to boys than girls overall. That is irrelevant to individuals. Your individual DD can be a girl who excels in maths. Encourage her.

This research suggests your telling your daughter this could create a self-fulfilling prophecy. I'd keep telling her how good girls are at maths, instead.
