I need urgent help *bi polar money mania advice*

Does anyone know of any apps or ways to manage money management in regards to bi polar mania.

I’ve got an appointment with my psychiatrist next week at the priory because DH has noticed that my behaviour is changing and I can feel it myself. I recently had a miscarriage and it’s kicked it all back off

last night time I went into mania I bought a life sized r2d2 cookie jar which is still in the house because they wouldn’t take it back and I use him as a reminder to take my meds.

I/We need ideas to keep me and our finances safe.

both of our wages are paid into the joint account, bills are paid out of a separate ‘spaces’ without us having to do anything.

I want to be ruthless and remove the starling app, all of the Apple Pay cards, unsave all cards from my phone and go cash only etc, but I have to use a card to get a bus ticket where we live.

i looked into a kite space for our account where DH puts money into an account on a weekly basis but it’s only for children and I’m at a loss what to do

Im not usually so ott about money but Richard r2d2 cost us £550 and as lovely as he is I cannot possibly afford (marriage wise ) to do this again. Please help!

Do everything you suggest and use a child's Go Henry card or something that drastically limits spending?

Good luck.

socks1107 · 25/09/2025 23:28

Get rid of all your cars and use something like revolut where your dh can put on it for you.
Hope you are feeling better soon

DirtyMartinii · 25/09/2025 23:41

Does go Henry accept adults ?

Hyperjar card may be the answer. It's free I believe. Sign up online. Husband can top it up as needed. Hope that helps 😊

fuckitallabit · 26/09/2025 07:51

You could use revolut - it works similar to go Henry. You could get a real or virtual card, but you can only spend money that's on the card

MidnightPatrol · 26/09/2025 07:53

I use a Revolut card as a pre-paid card.

Thingamebobwotsit · 26/09/2025 07:54

Oh bless you. Well done for recognising it and I hope you have a good suppprt network.

Agree with others, recind all your cards directly linked to accounts for a bit and use a cash top up card. Leave your DH or other family members to manage the actual cash for a bit until you are back to feeling normal again.

DirtyMartinii · 26/09/2025 07:55

thank you all

Hi there, I’m so sorry to hear that you are going through this. Speak to your bank if you can, they will have a vulnerability team and they should be able to put some special measures in place for you – don’t ask how I know this – please do talk to them if you feel up to it, there are ways to help you have to cope with this all alone.

Clychaugog · 26/09/2025 07:57

Yeah, prepaid debit card would be my suggestion. MSE has a feature and recommendations...

Second HyperJar. You can use it as an adult.

Viviennemary · 26/09/2025 08:03

I want to see a photo of this thing you bought.

HermioneWeasley · 26/09/2025 08:05

Are you on medication and taking it as instructed?

DirtyMartinii · 26/09/2025 08:09

@Viviennemaryi can’t share a photo of ours because it’s under a very very distinctive neon sign (not a bipolar purchase and it’s our surname) I paid someone to 3d print the fucking thing. I use it as a reminder to never ever stop taking my meds because ‘I feel better’

However I found one on eBay, don’t think it’s a cookie jar though.

Yes I am. I’ve also got sleeping tabs. I got an emergency appointment at the drs on Wednesday and ive been told to increase my meds. Its more that i can feel myself slipping into mania which is remarkable for me because i hardly ever have insight.

Open another account, such as a Revolut account. Take all cards linked to the joint account off your phone and out of your purse and give them to dh. Then, have a small weekly amount transferred to the Revolut account each week. You just use that.

Only thing I would say, is that you might find yourself then asking DH for more and then getting cross with him when he won't give it. Leading to rows, so be aware of that.

DontReinMeIn · 26/09/2025 08:14

Remove all cards from your phone.

open a Monzo account and let your husband transfer the necessary amount each day.

Bjorkdidit · 26/09/2025 08:21

Can you buy a bus pass or use an app for the bus so the card/money isn't available for anything else?

Otherwise any payment card that only has enough for your daily bus fare. Your DH can do a daily standing order I needs be.

I’m really sorry about your miscarriage, that must be really hard for you anyway, but then the added layer of it triggering your bi-polar disorder.

I have nothing useful to add practically, but I just want to tell you how fantastic you are for recognising that you’re becoming poorly again and getting the support you need. (In the least patronising manner.)
