If you’re thin, what does the voice in your head say?

If you’re offered a biscuit, or need to make a selection in a restaurant, what does the voice in your head say to help you make a healthy choice?

Kate Moss famously said ‘nothing tastes as good as skinny feels’. And my aunt used to say ‘oh I don’t like to feel full’.

If you’re thin, do you have a healthy phrase you tell yourself to help keep on the right track?

Thin or healthy weight?

soupyspoon · 25/09/2025 22:20

Well right now its saying 'this biscuit is nice, I wonder if I can fit in another one'

And its also saying 'your bra feels tight'

Awobabobob · 25/09/2025 22:22

When I look at a menu I choose what looks like the most delicious within my price range and what would fill me up without making me too full. So I would rarely go for a burger and chips for example.

Thin or healthy weight?

Healthy weight. One mention of a takeaway or a couple of drinks and my diet goes out the window.

Do I really want or need that. Also the temporary good feeling I will get from eating that isn't worth the longterm effects its going to have on my health.
It's not that I don't have treats, I just limit them. My body also just feels uncomfortable if I eat too much of certain foods and I hate feeling bloated and sluggish.

Izzywizzy85 · 25/09/2025 22:23

In a restaurant, I don’t. I literally choose what I want; I don’t eat out every day, it’s a treat and I like to enjoy it. Day to day I make sensible choices. It’s balance that helps me maintain a healthy weight, you have to relax some days.
I find routine really helps me. I have the same breakfast most days, and have some go-to meals which are within my daily calorie allowance. Takes the effort of thinking out of it. Also in the habit of weighing my food as I am prone to overeating if I don’t.

Thedownstream · 25/09/2025 22:24

I don’t get to out to eat enough or be offered biscuits enough to be overweight from that 🤣😩.

This said, I do have half a stone to lose and if I had the willpower to always make healthy choices I’m sure I’d have lost that. It would be bloody miserable though right?!

Butterflybum · 25/09/2025 22:24

It doesn’t really say anything. I eat if I’m hungry and don’t if I’m not. I don’t restrict and don’t overindulge.

SmallGoddess · 25/09/2025 22:25

Nothing. There is no voice in my head telling me what not to eat.

CornflakeGirlsClub · 25/09/2025 22:27

I don’t really have a ‘food voice’. I eat when I’m hungry.

Cinaferna · 25/09/2025 22:27

When I was slim I automatically chose the healthier options on a menu. My brain's default was to scan the menu for the lightest options - even when it came to treats - I'd go for an ice lolly not an ice cream on a hot day, or fresh fruit salad or sorbet not a big pudding in a restaurant. I never felt deprived doing this. It felt good to make healthy choices.

I never really had food issues until I was on medication that had a side of effect of making me crave carbs. I put on loads of weight and never really lost that love of carbs.

I am interested in the answers I hope this thread gets…
I have recently lost a stone through calorie counting and my internal voice has been tough!
I have often wondered what happens in other people’s heads because I fight with myself about what to eat all the time!

LaurieFairyCake · 25/09/2025 22:29

”Am I hungry”. If so I may eat it but often I will eat some nuts from my handbag.

Crushed23 · 25/09/2025 22:30

I don’t eat biscuits but I order exactly what I want in a restaurant. I just try to offset it by having a couple of low-calorie days straight after. It’s not really a conscious thought / voice in my head as I’m ordering, just something I automatically do.

I suppose I mean temptation in any setting - even at home. If you have any ‘treats’ in the house or are in the shops and get the urge to buy something - does anyone have a way of telling themselves to stay on track.

NotMyNigelFarage · 25/09/2025 22:31

I always struggled to resist temptation which wasn't helped by the sugar cravings associated with my ADHD. It's much easier now I work long hours and train Mon/Wed/Fri.

I think 'what was the point of forcing myself into the gym and getting home with an hour before bed and still needing to shower/eat/etc if I'm just going to cancel it all out with a few mins of scoffing'.

Tbh the hardest is after xmas or when I've had a bad few months. When I'm in shape I feel I have more to lose and don't want to sabotage it and spend twice the amount of time to get rid of it.

OhFeyreDarling · 25/09/2025 22:32

For me I just like reasonably healthy food and I hate the feeling of being stuffed, also fast food and takeaways make me feel shit after.

My only cravings outside of just being hungry at meal times are sugar, if I'm not careful I'll eat far too much. I try to stay off sugar completely for a couple of weeks and the cravings go.

A stone - well done!

I don’t necessarily choose healthier options, but I’ll usually order just a starter or eat only half of a main course. I get full very quickly.

I never eat puddings - not denying myself, I just don’t like or want them. Same goes for breakfast. I don’t eat between meals as it just wouldn’t occur to me. I have no interest in biscuits or chocolate. I like crisps though, and will often have a bowl with a glass of wine, but to be honest, that would make me too full for dinner.

FableLies · 25/09/2025 22:37

I don't really have a food voice. If I want something it's likely I'll have it. Tonight, I've had two glasses of wine and a bag of crisps. But generally, I don't have a preference for 'bad' food. I also never overeat. I hate feeling full. I also value martial arts and being able to tackle difficult moves (getting harder in my late 40s) over short term binging on food stuff. If I don't eat food that fuels my body efficiently, I'd find it harder.

FirstCuppa · 25/09/2025 22:42

I'm currently thinking "I'd bloody love a crumpet with butter and honey" but it's too cold to get out of bed...

I heard that the Japanese only eat to 2/3rds full and I thought at the time, yeah I think that's what I do. I can go from starving to almost full in about 6 bites though and if I over eat it does actually hurt. I've had periods in my life when it didn't but I don't know if I can tell you why, just that it's a lot easier not to over eat if you know you'll be in pain and feel sick for hours.

TheUsualChaos · 25/09/2025 22:43

I never turn down a treat. But I also don't really seek it out either for myself. I would very rarely buy cake or chocolate to eat at home just for the sake of it. I think the less sugar you have the less you crave it. For example I used to be unable to drink a coffee without a good heaped spoonful of sugar, I reduced it gradually and now don't need or want it.

Wowwee1234 · 25/09/2025 22:43

I genuinely think truly, naturally thin people don't get 'the food voice', which is why they don't understand food cravings (in my experience).

towhoknowswhere · 25/09/2025 22:44

I always have a voice there encouraging me to control what I eat. I wish I could ‘let go’ but I’ve been like it since I was 13/14 and I’m now 54!

I have very strong self control and this is driven by my absolute determination to remain slim.

Barleypilaf · 25/09/2025 22:46

With biscuits, it helps that I’m a food snob. I like homemade ones and homemade cakes, but supermarket is just palm oil and sugar, so has no appeal. I also dislike the feeling of having too much sugar - it makes me jittery.

At a restaurant, it just depends how hungry I am. Generally, I’ll try and eat a balance - so if lamb for main, I’ll choose a lighter starter. I don’t like feeling too stuffed.
