If you’re thin, what does the voice in your head say?

If you’re offered a biscuit, or need to make a selection in a restaurant, what does the voice in your head say to help you make a healthy choice?

Kate Moss famously said ‘nothing tastes as good as skinny feels’. And my aunt used to say ‘oh I don’t like to feel full’.

If you’re thin, do you have a healthy phrase you tell yourself to help keep on the right track?

No voice here. In restaurants I look at the menu and usually pick whatever I think will taste the best.

Biscuits aren't really an issue as I don't like sweet things. I don't think I've had a desert since I was a child.

outerspacepotato · 25/09/2025 22:47

Nothing....

There's a voice????? Huh?

AliceMaforethought · 25/09/2025 22:47

I'm thin and I eat what I want. I don't have an 'inner voice'.

I genuinely think truly, naturally thin people don't get 'the food voice', which is why they don't understand food cravings (in my experience).

It's interesting though as I haven't been over weight but I have had food cravings. I've had periods where I crave just meat or a certain veg - bowls of cabbage with dumplings and gravy was a weird one. I think I am actually quite in tune with what my body needs when I do this though and it's usually if I haven't eaten balanced meals for a bit so I assume I'm filling a nutrient gap my brain has clocked. Also I deffo get hormonal cravings for sugar and carbs.

ShesTheAlbatross · 25/09/2025 22:48

Nothing. I eat the biscuit if I want to, and I don’t if I don’t.

But I really don’t like feeling overly full. It’s not a willpower thing, I just do not want it if I’m already full.

Food is fuel

I sometimes think this. That said, I'm slim and regularly eat close to 3000 cals a day. Usually about 2500. Heavy lifting drastically increases your metabolism and I'm fairly active at work.

Gillyyy · 25/09/2025 22:51

I’ve found that eating a good breakfast helps my food decisions for the rest of the day. I normally eat two pieces of sourdough topped with avocado and grated raw carrot (to balance hormones/blood sugar) and collagen in my coffee.

Having different healthy snacks at home is so important because there’s always times when you’ll be tired and it’s easier to eat something less healthy if it’s in the house.

If I’m not wanting to eat much when I’m out I’ll eat some fruit before I go and then I don’t usually feel like a cake/brownie and I’m happy with a coffee.

I don’t go out for meals that often so I just order whatever I like! You could always ask to swap sides like chips for salad or vegetables if you wanted to.

NotMyNigelFarage · 25/09/2025 22:53

When people say they're slim and eat what they want. I'm assuming this isn't a whole cheesecake? 😂

Hashbrownsandcheese · 25/09/2025 22:53

I eat whatever I like, usually too much and often unhealthy. Exercise keeps me a healthy weight.

Flossflower · 25/09/2025 22:53

I don’t have a voice in my head telling me about food. I don’t buy biscuits or cake unless a friend is coming for coffee. I very rarely eat between meals.

Yes, I don’t have a food voice, nor do I have food noise which I hear people mention in relation to weight loss injections ie “they turn off the food noise”.
It’s annoying that sometimes on weight related threads there’s an assumption from some posters than people who are slim are all miserable and depriving themselves of what they really want. I’m really not. Food doesn’t really factor into my thinking beyond practicalities of, for example, do I have what I need for dinner. If I’m not hungry, I just dont want to eat, and it wouldn’t really occur to me.

Flutterbees · 25/09/2025 22:54

I calorie count, so I’d be wondering how many calories are in the biscuit, creamy pasta, burger etc. I’m post menopausal - I can put on weight by smelling food but it literally takes months of exercise and diet to lose weight. So for me, over eating is just not worth it and it’s not enjoyable.

Amethystanddiamonds · 25/09/2025 22:54

There isn't a voice. If I want the biscuit I have the biscuit. If I don't I leave it. At a restaurant I just eat what I want. Although I tend to have say a spag bol over a burger and fries because I prefer it. So naturally choose lower calorie options.

blankcanvas3 · 25/09/2025 22:55

That I’ll be fat and disgusting and unlovable if I have anything above the recommended portion size but then again I do have a history of anorexia so I still need to work on that one!

SunshineAndFizz · 25/09/2025 22:22

Healthy weight. One mention of a takeaway or a couple of drinks and my diet goes out the window.

I’m a size 6 and have been the same size all my life apart from pregnancy.

You've hit the nail on the head above: it’s the word ‘diet’. I’ve never been on one and I never will. When you get out of that mindset everything changes.

So in answer to your question - I love my body. It looks great and is healthy and strong. There’s no momentary taste sensation that would be better than how that feels.

So I guess Kate Moss was sort of right.

When you feel like this it’s not hard work to stay a healthy weight because it just never occurs to you to eat badly. Sort of in the same way as you wouldn’t walk through the mud in a beautiful pair of shoes — just why would you? It would ruin them.

If I could I would, but I actually honestly would be full after about 1/4 and it's a bit boring? I prefer starters or mains because there's more flavours on the plate.
It's painful to be full from over eating!

SheSaidHummingbird · 25/09/2025 22:56

Just some suggestions.

Don't keep calorific 'treats' in the house.

Change your leisure activities - if you often visit the cinema with friends and have a habit of eating popcorn throughout, why not go swimming/ go for a walk in a pretty area / try a historical walking tour of a city, or whatever suits your physical ability, but is still enjoyable and social.

Join a more physical club, such as karate/ judo/ kickboxing/ park run instead of sitting at home and eating snacks out of boredom.

Drink water - fruit flavoured or sparkling if you don't like plain - rather than lots of tea and coffee with milk and sugar if you work in an office.

Lots of food habits are connected to an activity or a routine, and from that comes boredom and snacking. Change it up! Try something new. Your mood will chnage, and your eating habits will follow.

Same here - it’s just not really an issue. If I really want a piece of cake I’ll have one. If I’m not that bothered I won’t. If I feel full I’ll stop eating.

Whatwouldnanado · 25/09/2025 22:58

I ask myself is it worth the calories. As others above I avoid over processed stuff. Sadly this did not work in the supermarket tonight when I bought a bag of kettle chips and mindlessly ate lots in the car on the way home. But I will have it in mind when I make my choices tomorrow. Herbal tea rather than the hot chocolate people offer to get at work. It’s moderation,

I wish I was like this. I want to keep eating long past the full stage. Right up to the feeling dick stage. I think it's the pleasure of actually eating something sugary. The dopamine hit.

NotMyNigelFarage · 25/09/2025 22:59

Good lordy, that was meant to be 'feeling sick'!

limescale · 25/09/2025 23:03

“Am I hungry, do I need this?”
When eating out I’ll look at the whole menu and decide upfront what I fancy. If the main course is large I’ll skip starter and pudding, but if I really fancy something from the starters and/or puddings then I’ll have a smaller main course. I’ll be aware of the empty calories in alcohol.
I rarely have all 3 courses, but I do like something sweet and really like when they serve those mini puddings with coffee.

MadCattery · 25/09/2025 23:03

I was always very slim, until I hit middle age. I lost 40 lbs by using the Lose It! app to track my food and found what my weaknesses are, too. I still log what I eat and plan ahead. I already know what I will have for breakfast, and for lunch tomorrow. If I'm meeting friends out, I check out the menu online and decide what I will have ahead of time. I bulk up meals with loads of veg. I usually have extra calories in my allowance, and can indulge in a treat occasionally. I'm never hungry, other than mealtimes, but I think I eat filling stuff, loads of fruit and veg. My BMI is 23, so I'm ok for 64 years old, I think.

Ilovemychocolate · 25/09/2025 23:03

A minute on the lips is a lifetime on the hips 😂
But actually, I just really think,is it worth it ?
I love being slim, so I use self control.
But I’ve been fat before, and absolutely hated it.
