I had to go to GP earlier with ongoing bowel issues. She asked me to lay down so she could listen to my abdomen. I laid down, she pressed the stethoscope onto my stomach and I ended up involuntarily farting loudly. She actually jumped back at the sound. Absolutely mortified, I start to apologise and my stomach starts making loud squeaky noises and I end up farting again mid sentence. She remained professional throughout but I’m so embarrassed. I have to go back tomorrow and I’m dreading a) seeing her again and b) it happening again.

DH says will have forgotten all about it. Is he right or just being nice? I feel like cancelling the appointment

🤣

gamerchick · 25/09/2025 21:04

You've got bowel issues. It's like a full stop isn't it?

She won't be thinking about your farts tonight don't worry.

ThatBluntZebra · 25/09/2025 21:04

I'm sorry to hear you're having issues. Given the nature of the issue I'm sure she was neither surprised nor alarmed, and will not be thinking about it. Please don't cancel the appointment.

Holdonforsummer · 25/09/2025 21:05

At least you have demonstrated the issue.

BashfulClam · 25/09/2025 21:06

She’s a Dr she knows that bodies do this. She’ll have experienced worse. As a Dr she will have been covered in all bodily fluids at some point in training/work. She’ll will have experienced much worse and funnier.

pizzaHeart · 25/09/2025 21:06

I actually think that in a way it was helpful as it just proved that you had an issue.

StasisMom · 25/09/2025 21:06

Please don’t worry!

KateKontent · 25/09/2025 21:06

They see (and hear) everything - don't worry! It's just part of their job.

Don't cancel the appointment. Your health is so much more important than that

PaisleyGilmourStreet · 25/09/2025 21:06

Patient flatulance is more or less a daily occurrence for a GP; preferable to vomit 😁

OneFingerOneThumbKeepMoving · 25/09/2025 21:06

There's not a chance in hell that she'll have given this a second thought as soon as you left her room. Please put it out of your mind and try not to worry x

Houndsahollering · 25/09/2025 21:07

Please don’t cancel the appt. I can promise you it wont have phased the doc in the slightest; she wont be thinking about it at all. Trust me we are used to this!

ChangingWeight · 25/09/2025 21:07

There’s no point in being embarrassed about this, you can blame it on being unwell. At least the GP sees you had a genuine bowel issue so couldn’t fob you off. Clearly something was happening in your stomach, which likely was what she was checking for.

Esthery · 25/09/2025 21:09

So at absolute worse you might end an amusing anecdote with no identifying details mentioned.

Most of my doctor friends have a few (much worse) stories to tell, but the vast majority of them involve awkward moments of them, or other medical professionals...

Occasionally something desperately sad will come up. I have a friend who won't touch mushrooms after failing to save the lives of most of a family who ate poisonous ones. They are clearly still carrying some trauma from that.

Your doctor won't be traumatised by an awkward moment. Don't miss your appointment!

Malorcamum · 25/09/2025 21:09

It’s only a fart, we all do them! Try to laugh it off and see the funny side :) the doc will have seen way worse!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/09/2025 21:10

Providing she didn't shout
'Jesus Christ! You nearly gave me a cardiac arrest!
It will be forgotten about, although it might be worth looking at your NHS record to see if there is smiley face or something.

BrisPerm · 25/09/2025 21:10

Thanks everyone. It was just as her head was so close to me I felt like I’d attacked her! I know it’s ridiculous but I suffer with terrible anxiety and I just can’t stop thinking about it.

OP posts:
ObtuseMoose · 25/09/2025 21:10

It's highly unlikely she'll forget it overnight!

She did jump a mile

no mention of it on my record - and no smiley face

Yep honestly! You’ve gone to her with bowel problems, and lo and behold when she examines you, you have bowel problems. It isn’t any more complicated than that from her point of view, she certainly won’t be dwelling on it.

Birdh0use · 25/09/2025 21:14

They will probably remember the trumps, but won't remember who it was!

ScrollingLeaves · 25/09/2025 21:15

This was related to the very issue you were seeing her for. Please do not worry, she will understand.

Deerfolk · 25/09/2025 21:15

She hasn’t forgotten and has already told me.

TheVeryHungryTortoise · 25/09/2025 21:15

I'm a doctor OP. This honestly would not phase me very much in the grand scheme of things. At the very most I might have a little laugh about it (in private.) But not in a laughing at the patient way, more that it was just a funny and awkward situation.

Please don't cancel your appointment! A bit of farting is totally normal. We often have much worse encounters with the human body.

aperollingintotheweekend · 25/09/2025 21:16

🤣🤣

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/09/2025 21:17

You could have said something along the lines of Bob Fleming from The Fast Show...

(I'll let you look that up on YouTube if you need to know.)
