ID cards to be introduced. What do you feel. ?

I have worked in serious organised crime for two decades. This is one of the best bits of news I have read in a long while. I have also been involved in ‘small boat’ arrivals. The reason people will by pass several safe EU countries to get to the UK is ‘I can get lost if I don’t get asylum’ ‘UK has no ID cards’ . It’s a no brainer .. why why has it taken so long. ? If you want to have the services your country has to offer - through most of the world - from healthcare to the library- you need to show you are a bona-fida citizen. However , for some unfathomable reason , the flag waving right wingers are always the one to oppose ..is it because they are scared it will work and leave their thinly veiled racism floundering ?

Yes to ID cards = YANBU
No to ID cards = YABU

I’m generally in favour of them as they just make things easier but you don’t have to be a “bone fide citizen” to access healthcare and libraries anywhere I have lived. I assume it would be like the US where your driving licence is used for everything, including flying?

Rexthesnail · 25/09/2025 16:58

I think its a great idea. It makes sense. Would be pretty cool if it replaced a passport too.

Im sure theres negatives I havent thought of but on the face of it, its a great idea.

KnittyNell · 25/09/2025 17:00

There is no way I will taking part.

Ablondiebutagoody · 25/09/2025 17:01

Can you imagine our police? "Papers please". They would love that. It's a no from me.

Well you will if its compulsory.

RedRosie · 25/09/2025 17:06

I think I'm fine with it. I have family in countries that require this - the world hasn't ended and they don't feel like they live in a police state.

I'd hope the government would be very careful who they outsource the work and data-handling to. We aren't good at these big IT projects in the UK, and people will have understandable concerns about data protection.

verycloakanddaggers · 25/09/2025 17:06

What's the cost to the taxpayer?
What's the price to the user?
What's the actual (not fantasy) timeline?
What impact will it really have?

Sorry?

Fishingboatbobbingnight · 25/09/2025 17:08

I’ve lived in Spain , Italy and Thailand . Your ID card is used for pretty much every government service when you sign up on line or in person.

Emergency Medical services should never be restricted . In the same way they are not restricted now.. however - to know who is using rhe NHS and why - would be invaluable.
New migrants should be issued with ID cards as well based on their immigration status. Asylum applied for - Student - work permit etc .. and the conditions they need to abide with .. with time restrictions. Ie Asylum seeker, no right to work for 6 months/or until claim has been decided . Student - 3 years (or 1 for Masters) Work Permit for the period of the contract .

Aaron95 · 25/09/2025 17:08

Perhaps someone can explain one single reason for doing this. Because I cannot see any advantge over the exsting system.

The argument that it will cut down on illegal employment is a joke. Employers are already obliged to check you have the right to work in the UK before employing you. Guess what - the unscrupulous ones don't do it now. What makes anyone think the fact your ID has gone from a paper document to an electronic one will make the slightest difference to them.

What are you sorry about . I’ve worked in SOC since 2004 .. so 21 years.. or over two decades..

I’m wondering how it can be enforced? How Can people be ‘forced’
to carry digital ID? Can the government insist that everyone owns and carries a smart phone? Try telling my 90 year old FIL that !

Why would that be a thing? You possessing an ID doesn’t give the police any more rights (and I don’t trust most of them).

PracticallyPeapod · 25/09/2025 17:10

I think it’s inevitable. We’re being asked to prove our identities more and more often and it’s ridiculous to have to use a utility bill or passport. People are having to get driving licenses and passports purely for ID reasons. If we need ID now it should be done properly.

tartyflette · 25/09/2025 17:12

Your phrasing is a little ambiguous.

Ahhh forgot this was pedant central .. I have worked in SOC investigations for 2 decades.. does that make it easier to comprehend ?

What’s the point of it?

ninjahamster · 25/09/2025 17:13

I’m not bothered about carrying one but do we have to pay for it? And will it need renewing every few years?

KnittyNell · 25/09/2025 17:13

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 25/09/2025 17:05

I assure that I won’t. 😄

CanterburyRoadBlock · 25/09/2025 17:15

I think this is dystopian. Why? To crack down on illegal working, a tiny fraction of the population? And in terms of organised crime, you can be a born here, lived here, family here for decades bona fide citizen, people still become involved in organised crime. Its addressing INEQUALITY that would be better to address this, not a shitty digital ID card. Its awful that tax payers money is being used for this.

Lonelycrab · 25/09/2025 17:15

Got no problem with it myself

Crunchienuts · 25/09/2025 17:17

Normal in other countries, no big deal

InMyHealthyEra · 25/09/2025 17:18

I agree it’s a positive and much needed thing.

I have a couple of family conspiracy theorists and their minds are already exploding over this

Reggiebo · 25/09/2025 17:18

Will the government keep this information safe. Hackers have easily been able to access companies just recently.
