Boots won’t let my mum pick my prescription

Ohffsreallyboots · 25/09/2025 10:53

I work full time an hours bus journey away from work. I was prescribed something yesterday and told I can’t get it sent to the pharmacy closest to my work.

my mum picks up all prescriptions for me and my dad when she’s in town, I’ll pick up when I’m in town etc. never been an issue before.

now they’re saying they can’t let her pick it up as she’s not me?! Then they let her pick up my dad’s.

I actually don’t know what I can do if they won’t let this happen?

I quite often collect my husband's prescription from Boots. As long as she can give them your date of birth and clarify address there shouldn't be a problem.

murasaki · 25/09/2025 11:02

That's odd, I pick up DP's all the time, just need the address and date of birth. Maybe because it's a small local one though, and they know me.

Tagyoureit · 25/09/2025 11:03

Did they say why? If she has picked up prescriptions for you before and can confirm your details then why have they refused?
Did your mum ask?

CracklingFlames · 25/09/2025 11:03

Course they can! Unless it's a controlled drug but in that case I normally ring to say who is picking it up.

TeenToTwenties · 25/09/2025 11:04

I pick up for my parents.
My adult DD picks up for me and I for her.

AgentPidge · 25/09/2025 11:05

This is bonkers. I collect DH's prescription from Boots all the time. I wonder if your branch has its own policy. Would it help if your mum took in a letter from you, authorising her to collect it?

Because she’s not me! But she’s done it before!it’s not for anything that would be shameful, it’s an antibiotic cream. I’m going to give them a ring in a little bit

Is it a controlled drug? They will ask to see ID of the patient and (I think) the collector.
My son is allowed to pick up mine but has to show them a photo of my driving licence on his phone. We have same surname which I think helps.

Not that I’m aware? It’s an antibiotic cream for my nose!

Could it be because they need to give you specific advice about use and side effects? I would ring the pharmacy and ask to speak to the actual pharmacist.

I don’t think so, I think they’re just being difficult. Im
on hold to them now!

Hopefully they can advise but I’d send your mum in with your ID. Maybe it’s because it’s not a repeat prescription but I don’t see why that would make a difference. How do they even know she’s not you anyway.
Thinking about it, I’m surprised there aren’t more problems with people stealing other people’s medication. I take a controlled drug and no one has ever asked who I am

Ohffsreallyboots · 25/09/2025 11:26

Not controlled. Not for side effects. Just their new rules apparently to do with paying for it. Absolutely fuming

murasaki · 25/09/2025 11:28

It must just be a Boots thing as I pay for DP's when I get it. And he has done for mine in the past. How annoying. I would have thought they'd be fussier if you aren't paying than if you are.

CracklingFlames · 25/09/2025 11:31

Well I pick up my friends from boots all the time!

MrsAvocet · 25/09/2025 11:32

I've never heard of that happening before. My DH and adult DS picked up all my prescriptions, including controlled drugs when I was in plaster for months a few years ago. And it's pretty random who goes for my housebound FIL's medication. I've been asked to confirm his address and date of birth on occasion but that's all. If everyone had to collect their own there would be an awful lot of sick or elderly people who never got their medicines! It seems a totally unreasonable policy to me - as long as someone pays why does it matter who? I suspect Boots will lose customers over this if other pharmacies aren't doing it.

Ohffsreallyboots · 25/09/2025 11:35

I think it might just be our store as we have a problem with crime. But I’m still raging

ChocolateCinderToffee · 25/09/2025 11:37

Weird. I’ve picked up a friend’s prescription before now, I only needed her name birthdate and postcode. Then again we live in the village and the pharmacist knows everyone. Was it for a controlled drug?

JDM625 · 25/09/2025 11:38

I collect DH's meds from Boots all the time. My local shop has a different pharmacist every time! I don't know if that is normal, but I assume they are locums? I heard a customer ask where the bank was, and 1 pharmacist said he had no idea, as has never been to the town before!

One time, I'd given DH's name and the pharmacist started talking to me as if I was the one taking the meds- despite DH's name being say Paul or Alan. I've never been asked for ID to collect his meds though- even when its been a new medication which wasn't on repeat prescription. I hope you get it sorted OP.

Beekman · 25/09/2025 11:40

This doesn’t sound right at all but in order to get the prescription to you asap, will Boots deliver to your house?

Tortielady · 25/09/2025 11:45

How odd. My DH regularly fetches my prescriptions for me on his way home and I've got his for him in the past. It's not a Boots, but there's a lot of chopping and changing of pharmacists; the assistants get to know you, the pharmacists not so much, which is unfortunate. DH confirms my name and address and if there is a new medication, the pharmacy follows up with a phone call a week or two later to see how I am. As a pp says, if this is a thing, a lot of people won't get their meds, or they'll have to switch to home delivery, which isn't convenient for everyone.

Livpool · 25/09/2025 11:49

I get prescribed the strongest dose of codeine and my mum and DH have picked it up! They are being ridiculous

This ^
we always pick prescriptions for each other. I wonder if she accidentally got your address wrongly and that’s why?

pizzaHeart · 25/09/2025 11:55

What new rules?
I picked up my daughter’s prescription from our Boots on Tuesday so less than 48 ago. Paid for it and left. It was obvious that it’s not for me from her date of birth 🙂 no one asked me anything.

Ohffsreallyboots · 25/09/2025 11:58

I’m going to call back on my lunch and give them a piece of my mind. I physically cannot get to the store and I’m worried my condition will worsen!
