Have just added someone to facebook who I used to be friends with when I lived in South Africa. Have just been looking at his friend list to see if I could find his brother, who I also got on with very well, and see that he has 242 friends .

I am constantly baffled by the facebook finominon, and the amount of "friends" people have on there. And I do wonder whether it's almost like a contest, to see who can have the most friends.

I know I have 400 now - i MUST beat my sister

MaureenMLove · 02/06/2008 21:29

I've got 13 and 8 of them are MN people!

wannaBe · 02/06/2008 21:31

400? but they're not all real friends are they? do you ever communicate with any of them? or are they just there to make up the numbers?

There's more of that on Myspace than on Facebook, mainly because of the personal information that is available on FB, whereas MS you're putting up more a personbality page than a social interaction page IYSWIM?!

I only add real people that I really know on FB but have collected random folk that I've got to know quite well on MS (if I don't speak to them for a month I delete them, boring otherwise ).

PenelopePitstops · 02/06/2008 21:34

i have 383

of which i would be able to pick them all from a crowd and communicate with about 100 at least monthly

the rest are old school pals

Olihan · 02/06/2008 21:37

DH has close to 100 but I'd say over 90% of those are people he will never, ever speak to or meet again. They're mainly people from school or people he used to work with who are being nosy or he's being nosy about.

I asked him who a couple of people were and he said "Oh, just someone I was at school with. He/she was a twat." Which kind of begs the question 'why did you accept them as a friend when they never have been and never will be?'

I don't get FB either, tbh. I used it to 'see' my MN friends and that's it.

ANTagony · 02/06/2008 21:41

I joined last year having met a semi famous person who told me all about it and sent me a friend request thing. I was very flattered at the time. He does a lot of socialising with his job and now I realise he adds over 100 people a month. Well into 4 figures now - actually I think its quite sad and they're obviously not all friends and at those numbers barely even acquaintances.

Flashman · 02/06/2008 21:46

No I really have about 60 - old school friends mainly and it is great for that

don't know how many I have but not more than 100. However, one of my nephew's friends invited me to be his friend. I used to know this boy when he played with my nephews and know his Mum but I doubt he would manage more than a hello if I saw him so god knows why he wants to be my friend on FB.

I guess it must just be - look how popular I am

BarcodeZebra · 02/06/2008 22:50

I turn people down if I don't know them. Christ they get pissed off. Punch in the face would piss me off not an electronic rejection from a total stranger....

DirtySexyMummy · 02/06/2008 22:53

I have 168 friends on FB, and they are all, every single one, people who I know and am actually friends with in RL.

Some I see daily, some weekly, some only once a year. But they are all actual friends. Most of them would be invited to my wedding, for example.

I don't understand people who have hundreds of 'friends' that are actually people they don't, or barely know.

DirtySexyMummy · 02/06/2008 22:57

Sorry.. I can't resist.

'finominon'?

BarcodeZebra · 02/06/2008 23:00

I know!!!!!

madamez · 02/06/2008 23:04

I think the OP has a visual problem and uses a typing programme that sometimes makes spelling errors (apologies if that's not correct)

joash · 02/06/2008 23:05

most of them are not 'real' friends though are they?

DirtySexyMummy · 02/06/2008 23:09

If that is the case Madamez - then someone really needs to have a word with whoever wrote the program.

MissingMyHeels · 02/06/2008 23:13

I have 179 FB friends and they are friends - well people I know - colleagues, old school friends, family etc.

I do/would reject anyone I didn't know.

madmuggle · 03/06/2008 00:34

The 'people you might know' function can be funny. It keeps throwing up people I detest and my ex. Many giggles
