Fucking Gross Adverts

BlueEyedBogWitch · 21/09/2025 07:47

It started with little kids on the toilet with their pants round their ankles, holding their noses.

Then there was the one with a woman farting at work and then scurrying to the bathroom clutching a bog roll.

I think I reached the nadir last night when I was subjected to an advert for razors which treated me to the sight of a man bending down with his back to the camera and his hand under his dressing gown, shaving his sack and crack.

I mean, that might not be the nadir. Maybe next time they’ll drop the dressing down, and I can feast my eyes on his arsehole winking at me while it gets a short back and sides.

At this rate I’ll have to clear all the crap off my kitchen table and start eating like a civilised human again.

AIBU, or are adverts getting increasingly foul?

you've all clocked that the "mouth in the head ads" the mouth is upside down, right?

daisychain01 · 21/09/2025 18:24

That sounds gross @Oscarsmom71 from the descriptions of some of these adverts, the promoters want to shock and disgust people or at least be "edgy" just to get noticed. Which is pathetic because a good product sells itself. If I were the advertisers of a deodorant I'd want the ad to promote things like freshness, nature, fresh air, confidence etc so consumers of the product have a positive perception not someone's BO ridden armpits.

topcat2014 · 21/09/2025 18:29

Don't get me started on the domino's ones. Plus no one would ever shave under a dressing gown. More awkward than changing into trunks on a beach. Imagine the injury possibility

CarefullyCuratedFurniture · 21/09/2025 18:34

Oh god, the fucking Pepto-Bismol one. I hate it. There is no way I would ever buy the product, primarily because in my mind it's now firmly associated with "Diarhooooeeeeaaaaaa" and im not putting anything in my mouth with that association.

Thought it was just me - ads used to be humorous- now I just flip to my phone during them - muting is a fav idea because if I hear domino oh hoo again I might just break the tv!! I don’t know if the shock value of the gross ads is to get people to look / talk about them but for certain the talent pool in advertising must have shrunk significantly because I can’t remember the last as I watched that made me think “ ohh that’s clever/ funny/ sweet/ entertaining “ ( possibly the haribo kiddy voices?)

The last truely moving advert that I saw is the Irish supervalu Christmas add with the injured reindeer. You can Google it if you are not in Ireland and didn't see it. But I'm a sucker for a cute baby mamal, so maybe it is just me. I can not relate to how some of the current adds achieve what they are meant to. But I'm told brand connections and recognition and loyalty are objectives not just increasing sales. I find them slightly too much, but there are marketing professionals who are experts and there seems to be a consensus these are effective marketing strategies.

Pianoaholic · 21/09/2025 18:51

The pepto bismol one is the least gross and irritating because it is memorable and has a catchy tune. Also, it doesn't actually show anything offensive.
The others.... I never buy Andrex anyway and that advert makes me leave the room. I stick to sainsburys loo roll (or 'bog standard') as I call it, and will continue to do so!

RJ2023 · 21/09/2025 18:58

The ad that always has me frantically reaching for the mute button is that fucking Maltesers advert. I don't want to have to think about that woman and her "companion" Gerard "getting it on". I have no idea what it has to do with selling Maltesers.

Clafoutie · 21/09/2025 19:17

Sux2buthen · 21/09/2025 09:16

The outrage 😂😂and they say Mumsnet is uptight.

Its not a recent thing anyway. Remember ‘I can do it too with kandoo’ with the kid on the toilet saying ‘pooooh that stinks’
But, thanks to their advertising I remember that one and there’s a whole thread here naming them all from viagra to tena therefore increasing their reach so doing their job for them.

It’s not necessarily outrage, so much as revulsion, which is a different thing. Maybe people are fed up with the crassness of it all, I know I am, and it has nothing to do with morality or taking offence.

I'd forgotten that horror. Bring back the two office ladies instead

Sux2buthen · 21/09/2025 19:28

It’s been this way for years and years, it’s deliberate and provoked conversation therefore promotes the ad.
Adverts in general are dull and repetitive, they go for shock to stand out and this thread proves it works.
But yes, a lot of the repulsed/ outraged/ whatever you want to call it comments are funny.
everyone should have a snickers

Well I knew a girl at school who had a reputation for what she did with men and Maltesers.

I'm old and I can remember times when women didn't talk about the menopause. Instead of talking about it, they thought they were going mad.

and if you've been through the menopause, most of you will understand why that was.

in the same way The Samaritans was started by the vicar who conducted the service for a young girl who'd killed herself because she's started her periods and thought she was dying.

I find most adverts irritating, true, but they most certainly don't offend me. Especially the ones that show what is normal in our lives. You know, being born, menstruation, menopause, shitting, dying. Those kind of things

Every single time that's on I shout, 'no one wants to imagine you two getting it on!'

But no one's saying the adverts are offensive, or that there's anything wrong with advertising period products, toilet roll etc; the point was that some are unnecessarily graphic to the point of being unpleasant or even revolting.

user1471453601 · 21/09/2025 20:48

@ParanoidGynodroid I understand your view, but graphic is not what I see.

In my view no child is showing shitting, no woman is shown bleeding. I wouldn't necessarily object to either, after all, they are completely normal. But I'd understand if others found them "graphic".

But "suggesting" menstruating and evacuating your bowels ? Some of which we all do (the paper advert with the child) and the sanitary towel (as though menstruating was somehow unsanitary - says it all really) which 50% of the population does?

Ugh 😣 yes!! Why did they do it? What does that have to do with chocolate.

And to think, my favourite ad as a child was the Malteser ad with the wide mouth frog... I loved it so much, we had a recording on VCR with that ad and I used to FF it just to watch the ad 😆 ..how the mighty have fallen, for shame Malteser, for shame.

Some young, edgy advertising manager might think that's the next Malteses tv campaign sorted! 😜

Totally with you OP
I often turn the tele over and wish the same ridiculous warnings that come on before the most innocent of programmes could warn us about the adverts.
I don’t want to see it, I never asked to and they all turn my stomach.

No good to me, they're not gluten free.

DiscoBob · 22/09/2025 11:53

I just remembered another grim one, a few months back.

It was for shaving stuff. It featured that awful guy who used to be a swimmer. Looks about 12 and bought/stole a couple kids with a much older man.

It had him naked, and it showed him shaving his pubes! Well obviously you don't see the d&b, but it showed right above it. I think he then winked at the camera and said some awful cheesy double entendre.

Gawd it knocked me sick.

Why would anyone need to see what a man shaving his genitals looks like on an advert?! 🤢🤣

"I thought you were going to be talking about the chewing gum (I think, because I can’t actually bear to watch) advert where the person has a whole mouth in their forehead that talks and they feed it. It’s so fucking gross and weird."

I also cannot bear that one and immediately switch channel until it's over.
