yesterday I woke at 830. I had a cup
of tea and lay in bed till 930 when I went for a 30 min run. Had another cup
of tea, tidied the kitchen then walked the dog for an hour at 1130. Made lunch. Did the ironing and finished clearing out the box room (going to set up as a study)

But then it was 3pm and I had the rest of day free and ended up just watching tv, did read for about an hour.

My main hobbies are running and yoga. I started playing piano again but my daughter finds it disturbing when she’s doing homework.

Need to find a hobby I can do alone at home. I’m not creative at all. Any ideas.

An electric piano with headphones would mean you can practice without disturbing anyone else. That’s a lovely thing to do.

Do you enjoy writing? Painting? Reading is a good hobby, if I had any free time I’d be doing that!

Genealogy can take up hours. And hours. You can connect with otherwise unknown cousins and learn and share stories.

And it’s normally very quiet.

After a few years of intense working I now have some more free time so I’m getting back into some hobbies. I walk my dogs, doing some reading, I’m learning a new language and do some of the open Uni free online courses. I’ve also found some penpals so I write letters. Still looking for more hobbies though!

Can you get involved in a club that your daughter takes part in? As someone whose free time is mostly taken up by volunteering at a club where the vast majority of parents don’t volunteer I would love to have another parent help out with the admin/assisting!

And it is really enjoyable and you learn lots of new skills too. Plus - it’s something to do with your daughter.

I listen to music and sing in my spare time (music is basically my entire life and always has been). Or play on my Nintendo Switch. Otherwise, I sit and scroll on my phone for hours.

MaybeIf · 21/09/2025 07:55

But why can’t you go out and have a hobby that involves leaving the house?

ZenNudist · 21/09/2025 08:00

I run but tend to spend over an hour. Why not enter a 10k and up the amount of time spent running?

I also swim. Next year I'm planning on entering a triathlon. So I need to practice cycling really too.

I do pilates at the local leisure centre.

I sing in a choir but this doesn't take up much time per week.

I love going for walks with friends either local area or further afield.

Reading is a hobby I only get to do on holidays.

Bushmillsbabe · 21/09/2025 08:07

Does it have to be at home? How old is your daughter - old enough to be left home alone for short periods?
You could volunteer with a charity? Organisations like girl guiding.
If you enjoy running - how about a running club?

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 21/09/2025 08:08

I like sewing, mostly clothes. Have a look on TikTok at some sewing accounts.
It’s very relaxing but also challenging in a good way. And you get clothes you can wear!

I do cross stitch and listen to podcasts whilst I do it. I'm not creative at all but like that I can follow a pattern and its pretty easy.

BeaLola · 21/09/2025 08:17

I read a lot
Long walks
Colouring - Ginsburg relaxing
Just taken up knitting - I don't plan on anything complicated, just the odd scarf or two
I go to exhibitions, listen to music
Swimming

I second, a digital piano... you can get them quite cheap second hand (a proper one not just a keyboard ) and it's a game changer! Or how about taking up a guitar with headphones and amp?
In summer my hobby is my allotment, but in winter it's piano, guitar (badly...both!) and I also love paint by numbers... you can get photos turned into canvases and it's very relaxing.

Horse riding.

I literally spend hours of my life at the stables, its the best waste of time ever.

Or golf, DH plays and that takes a lot of time too. It's quite sociable if you join a club.

ToffeePennie · 21/09/2025 09:32

I do am-drams. Nothing like the thrill of making 100 people cry or laugh. I love it.

Bjorkdidit · 21/09/2025 09:37

I'm not creative at all but I enjoy the mindfulness that painting gives so I bought some paints and this book that I'm working my way through.

If I had more time I would look into geneology as some of the work has already been done by a distant relative as part of an 'heir hunters' scenario, so I'd like to fill in some other branches.

I also go hiking and listen to podcasts, but that would depend on whether your DD is old enough to be left home alone for a few hours - needing to do homework would suggest she might be if she's sensible.
