To think that humans need to believe in love, even if it hurts, because we can always heal again?

Love makes us vulnerable but it also gives life meaning. I know people say they’ve given up on it after being hurt but I think deep down, we all need to believe in it. AIBU to think that love is still worth believing in, no matter what?

Define love?
is it the commoditised notion romance & marriage with Marriage and kids
Is it love for social appropriation and social acceptance
is it crazy wild do what want follow the hormones.?

People can do what they want. It's not for others to say whether they should believe in love or not.

Plmnki · 19/09/2025 22:11

Goodness me, is it always 1968 in you house or today special?

The kind of love that isn’t just transactional or hormone-driven but a connection that grows through care, honesty and shared meaning. The post wasn’t about romanticising suffering, more about believing that love (in any form) is still worth trying for.

See, there’s the rub. There’s no universal definition of love
Love is your brain being flooded with dopamine, you crave and need that chemical hit. Love also has a social and societal component which sets parameters. Class ,Religion and finances also shape notions of love

Friendlyfire1 · 19/09/2025 22:16

Sorry to say it op but at 58 I absolutely know that everything is transactional, including 'love', but it's nice to believe that it's not sometimes, because life is a bit bleak otherwise.

sfamsua · 19/09/2025 22:16

YABU however you define it, some people won’t ever get to enjoy true love. It’s about managing expectations.

Just sharing a thought, no time machine needed.

@StillWarmEmber keep believing whatever you like, it’s your life

I believe in love

but for everyone it’s different

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 19/09/2025 22:45

I can assure you that deep down I don’t need to believe in love. I am gloriously happy being single.

outerspacepotato · 19/09/2025 23:15

I'm sticking with hot sauce.

You do you.

Oh, let me try:

AIBU to think that without love we are basically sentient potatoes rolling through existence, occasionally sprouting an eye, but never truly blooming???

Because listen: yes, love hurts. It stabs you in the chest like a toddler with a plastic fork, and yes, you will cry so hard you could hydrate a cactus. BUT. Is that not the very essence of life? The soaring symphony of joy and pain??

HansHolbein · 19/09/2025 23:37

What did everyone have for dinner tonight?

HansHolbein · 19/09/2025 23:37

What did everyone have for dinner tonight?

I had a baked potato. But is it ever just a baked potato? Or is it the embodiment of resilience — the humble root, surviving underground, waiting for its moment to nourish?

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 20/09/2025 00:06

Love is a bomb going off in your brain, the dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin. The obsession, the compulsion, the physiological responses.. No wonder it feels so overwhelming and intoxicating.
Love hurts? No,Not if you’re doing it right…

Totally with you OP. It's what we're here for 😊
