I took down some flags and DH wasn’t happy

On my commute today, I noticed someone had hung three large St George flags on a bridge coming out of our village. They have been popping up everywhere but this particular instance I thought “I’m not having that”. On the way home I pulled over and took them down.

when I got home and DH asked why I was binning three large flags I told him and he.. had some interesting opinions. He told me I shouldn’t be pissing off people in the village, that they have every right to hang an England flag in England, and that I’m being too political.

For a start, I would argue that I’ve always been quite strongly opinionated so he shouldn’t be surprised I did it.

Just as others have the right to their opinion I have mine. We have people in the village who are migrants… why should they have to look at that. It’s clear why they were hanging there given what’s going on at the moment and I’ve never see a flag hanging in the village in the decade we’ve been here so why else would they be there now.

I’m just so disappointed with it all. With the UK, with DH.

Next time maybe I’ll add to the collection instead. 🇬🇷🇮🇪🇮🇳🇦🇫🇧🇸🇵🇰🇪🇸🇸🇩🇿🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Do you even know the law? Why don’t you read up on it instead of stubbornly refusing to understand that flags on public property don’t belong to anyone and can be binned by anyone?

How would you even identify which flag belongs to who? Have you monogrammed them?

You can say what you like, but so can we. That's how freedom of speech works.

You absolutely have a right to fly a flag on your own property.

If you choose to fly a flag in a public place, then we have the right to take it down.

And it’s OP’s right to her freedom to remove the flags.

Or do you think freedom only belongs to some?

Why not leave it to the council to determine where flags should be put up in the first place?

Councils are over stretched, they can’t get to them all.

It's you who's being disingenuous and assigning meaning to this that isn't there for a lot of people.

Arrant nonsense. People don't call themselves "Warriors" unless they believe they're fighting against something and others are now following their lead. And I'm not surprised you side-stepped my question - you simply don't have an answer that you won't be embarrassed by (or, at least, should be). People don't co-opt our national flag to protest about immigration for no reason - they're using it as a passive-aggressive racist symbol - to tell immigrants that they're not English and they're not welcome here. Shame on all of you who misuse our national flag this way - it's not patriotism; it's racism.

So leave. You don’t like the OPs actions, you don’t like immigration. So go. Or are you just trying to censor those that disagree with you? There’s a word for that- it’s called being a hypocrite (since I clearly need to spell it out to you).

But by removing a flag which does not belong to the OP they are censoring someone that disagrees with them.

And as you've already agreed - there's a word for that - it's called being a hypocrite.

And it’s OPs right of take action to remove a symbol of xenophobia from a public space.

She is exercising her freedom and patriotism in her own way. I’d say OPs actions are more in line with true British values.

The same Britain that millions of Indians, Africans and other brown people across the Commonwealth died fighting for in the world wars; the same Britain that countless Caribbean and South Asian teachers, nurses and tradespersons sailed across the world to help rebuild in response to Britain’s cry for help following WW2, is now a country demonising immigrants, blaming foreigners and minority groups for the country’s problems, and refusing to acknowledge the invaluable contribution of immigrants (both past and present). to these Isles. That’s rather anti-British wouldn’t you say?

When we lived in the U.S. for 2 years, nearly everyone in our town flew the American flag. I didn’t feel threatened. When I went on holiday to Greece there were flags flying everywhere. Scottish people love displaying their flags, even on number plates. Would you criticise them or accept it?

So you believe that people like Farage and Tommy Robinson should stop complaining about the state of the UK and do their patriotic duty by emigrating? I wholeheartedly agree. Hopefully they will take their supporters with them.

No I haven’t already agreed. I have something called a brain, and I try to use it from time to time.

Your comment is completely illogical. I’ve read it multiple times and still don’t understand what point you are attempting to make.

I said that it would be unpatriotic to let the country be taken over by racist idiots.

If you took that to refer to you, then that was your own inference.

You don't understand the meaning of the word "Xenophobic" - go and look it up.

The people who put up the flags didn't seek permission from their local councils - they just took this action into their own hands.

Except many of the Romans think your mate Tommy is a racist thug. I’ll do as those Romans do, thanks 🥱
