I took down some flags and DH wasn’t happy

On my commute today, I noticed someone had hung three large St George flags on a bridge coming out of our village. They have been popping up everywhere but this particular instance I thought “I’m not having that”. On the way home I pulled over and took them down.

when I got home and DH asked why I was binning three large flags I told him and he.. had some interesting opinions. He told me I shouldn’t be pissing off people in the village, that they have every right to hang an England flag in England, and that I’m being too political.

For a start, I would argue that I’ve always been quite strongly opinionated so he shouldn’t be surprised I did it.

Just as others have the right to their opinion I have mine. We have people in the village who are migrants… why should they have to look at that. It’s clear why they were hanging there given what’s going on at the moment and I’ve never see a flag hanging in the village in the decade we’ve been here so why else would they be there now.

I’m just so disappointed with it all. With the UK, with DH.

Next time maybe I’ll add to the collection instead. 🇬🇷🇮🇪🇮🇳🇦🇫🇧🇸🇵🇰🇪🇸🇸🇩🇿🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Do try to keep up with what you yourself have written! “I know I will continue putting them up wherever possible” - that’s a direct quote from you, so yes you are doing something. And you still haven’t answered why and what you hope it will achieve.

The only people this “national pride” is “cheering up” is the anti immigrant brigade. There are plenty of us who find it depressing- the opposite of cheerful. I don’t find my own country’s flag offensive in any way, so I don’t know why you’re asking me to explain why I do.

p.s. it’s there is frustration, not “their”. There’s a high correlation between the flag bearers and poor spelling and grammar. Funny, that.

You know you're losing the argument when you have to resort to correcting people's grammar.

its clear the Left in this country are starting to panic. For so long the rhetoric has been, look at this evil Tory Government, TWAW, beating people over the head with white privilege, be ashamed of Britain and being British (let’s all move to France). It’s now starting to crumble, the Labour Party are proving to be the shambles of a government we knew they would be, the courts have ruled for all relevant matters women are classified as such by their biology. Being are saying actually I’m proud to be British actually and proud of our history. France is being shown to have worse issues than us. The always ridiculous notion of white privilege is dead in the water.

In short, they’ve lost control of the narrative, they cried wolf too many times and they sowed the wind and now they’re reaping the whirlwind.

Actions have consequences. Who knew?

I am far from left wing. Very far. But where I live, the flags are a sign of being a thick bastard.

You really don’t get it. Even with all the chaos and upheaval surrounding you, you still can’t see it. It’s amazing to think you cherish this ideal even when all the evidence is staring you in the face that it’s not working.

You won’t like what’s coming down the pipeline. Things are going to get much, much worse, sadly, and you can’t say you weren’t warned by others who can see it coming.

@smallpinecone , you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink

We all know what 150,000 people DO NOT look like, and they certainly don't pack like sardines and fill up the length and breadth of Westminster bridge and all those surrounding streets.
If the people at the march equated to roughly slightly more than how many it takes to fill Wembley stadium, then there'd be sheer pandemonium every time a football match or a concert was played there.

And you may argue that people enter or leave Wembley at staggered times, but the march bought much of London to a standstill, and that doesn't happen if there's a game on.

Well, no, because football matches don't take place in central London...

And Wembley holds about half of 150,000 people.

And... OMG, there are a lot of people here. (That's the anti-Brexit march).

No, pretty sure was referring to anyone who doesn't like it should leave.

And that's a fair comment no?

No, it's not a fair comment.

People who don't want to see their landscape and urban environment despoiled with multiple bits of tattered, dirty cloth and shabby red paint are quite as entitled to be here as anyone else.

You can take them down from public places if you like. Nobody has a right to fly flags on lampposts or paint them on roundabouts, whether they're the St George Cross, the Palestinian flag or the Idiots R Us Standard. That means that anyone has the right to remove them.

Flags get dirty, they need taking down and washing every now and again. As for the paint jobs, some of the road markings I've seen done could be mistaken for graffiti imo. Their hearts aren't in it, which is especially evident when they paint fresh markings over potholes 😂

So if it's censoring your freedom of speech to suggest that you could leave the country if you don't like how things are, then surely the same logic would apply to you suggesting that others should leave the country if there things that they don't like. We all have an equal right to express our opinions and we can all vote with our feet if we don't like how things are run.

I'm not quite sure why you think you should have a casting vote? But perhaps you misspoke.

What is this imaginary country you inhabit?

I go on holiday in the UK and always find wonderful museums and heritage sites celebrating British history.

Only last month I visited a friend in Yorkshire and went to Saltaire (a wonderful converted mill now mostly devoted to British artist David Hockney) and the Bradford Industrial Museum - dedicated to our industrial history and technological innovation.

My friend liked the museum so much she's now enrolled as a volunteer. Much more useful than wandering the country sticking up flags on every lamppost.

I don't think any of these people bemoaning "British culture being destroyed" ever bother to visit a theatre, or a museum, or a beautiful church building, or watch a box set of Dad's Army, or read a novel by Jane Austen or any of our other wonderful British authors.

Too busy moaning behind a keyboard about immigrants, I suppose. They should all take a walk and actually enjoy the wonderful country that's around them.

If I hated it here so much that the very sight of the flag upset me, of course I'd go elsewhere.

Look, I wouldn't move to Dubai because I'm not a muslim, I would be offended by the treatment of women and the existence of slavery, and I don't like the heat. If I moved there and started complaining about all those things, and telling people who lived there they were racist and stupid for being proud of their country, and that they should change everything to suit me, what would you say about that?

That sort of talk would get you deported lol.

But let’s talk about Dubai. Citizenship is almost impossible if you aren’t born of an Emirati father (Emirati women don’t automatically pass down citizenship).

You can live in the UAE all your life, pay taxes, have kids, but neither you nor your kids will ever get citizenship. There’s no confusion over who is Emirati and who is not.

Which is remarkable because Emiratis have far less claim to a distinct ethnicity. Maybe because they have protected themselves in this way, there is far less opposition to immigration.

Oh my bloody christ. Animals being paraded down the street to their deaths in back gardens???

I take it the Police could do nothing g about it?? So our law is protecting and allowing this this behaviour?? Wtf??

This is so foul and to happen in our Country makes me want to vomit.

I feel sick to my stomach. This is the sort of hell that we are being subject to.
This is just one of the many many reasons people have had enough.
My grandparents would be distraught.

It's disgusting isn't it. those poor animals, why don't people save their anger for cruel acts like this going on amongst us.
Instead they'd rather turn a blind eye I think.

History doesn’t stop at a point in the past. Some people would like to maintain that national identity going forwards. If things carry on the way they are your only reference to England in its form will be in a museum. There are some people who don’t want their identity only preserved in a museum for others to ‘remember’…

That was just a small aside to rest of my post, definitely not losing the argument. Also I believe the correlation between support for England flags and poor spelling/grammar actually says a lot, so it’s relevant.

popcornandpotatoes · 19/09/2025 16:23

Good for you op and I would do the same if the opportunity presented itself

The faux naivety around 'what's wrong with an English flag in england' from so many is embarrassing. Watch the fucking news and you'll see why. The flag has been highjacked and they are popping up everywhere for a very specific reason. Being English is getting more and more embarrassing thanks to fucking flag shaggers

That’s not really how it works.
Just because someone else breaks the law doesn’t give anyone else the right to do the same. If flags are illegally placed, it’s the authorities’ job to handle it, taking them down yourself isn’t “following suit,” it’s breaking the rules too.

Here's a video of the authorities trying to take down some flags.

Make the most of museums and British heritage sites, as if the Country continues with the influx of mass migration , these places will one day be a thing of the past I believe, and you won't recognise anything of British culture.

You’re completely missing the point. It is the way these poor beasts are being treated in this Country from a culture that is not ours and I don’t like this. It’s abhorrent.

I’m well aware what goes on in other parts of the world but I’m not living in other parts of the world am I.

It would be an interesting study. I don't suppose anyone has hard data just yet, but it's certainly the case in my town that the flags are predominantly flying in areas of higher deprivation and lower levels of education. However, there could be a range of possible explanations for that, so we shouldn't read too much into it.

Essentially the white working class of this country you regard as scum.

The hypocrisy is incredible. Endless compassion reserved for illegal migrants yet nothing but vitriol and contempt for your fellow countrymen. You’re a perfect stereotype - the person who virtue signals endlessly and talks constantly about how kind, tolerant, inclusive and caring you are while being nothing of the sort.

'Definitely not losing the argument'

Judging by the support of most of the Country, I'd say people with your views have already lost it.
By comparing people who support unite the kingdom, with the inability to spell properly, you're just making a judgemental fool of yourself.
