I took down some flags and DH wasn’t happy

LittleChopper · 18/09/2025 23:13

On my commute today, I noticed someone had hung three large St George flags on a bridge coming out of our village. They have been popping up everywhere but this particular instance I thought “I’m not having that”. On the way home I pulled over and took them down.

when I got home and DH asked why I was binning three large flags I told him and he.. had some interesting opinions. He told me I shouldn’t be pissing off people in the village, that they have every right to hang an England flag in England, and that I’m being too political.

For a start, I would argue that I’ve always been quite strongly opinionated so he shouldn’t be surprised I did it.

Just as others have the right to their opinion I have mine. We have people in the village who are migrants… why should they have to look at that. It’s clear why they were hanging there given what’s going on at the moment and I’ve never see a flag hanging in the village in the decade we’ve been here so why else would they be there now.

I’m just so disappointed with it all. With the UK, with DH.

Next time maybe I’ll add to the collection instead. 🇬🇷🇮🇪🇮🇳🇦🇫🇧🇸🇵🇰🇪🇸🇸🇩🇿🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Do you want a pat on the back OP? Is this your way of letting us know how 'progressive' and cool and enlightened you are? Look at me, I'm so cool and progressive that I stand up to my bigoted husband. People are flying England flags not out of aggressive nationalism but in defence. They can feel their national identity being destroyed around them, and when they complain not only are they told to shut up they're told to 'celebrate'. Nobody voted for mass immigration or multiculturalism. They have been imposed on us by the spiteful, destructive, hate-filled left.

You and your little supporters on this thread better pray there is never another war OP. If Putin and China ever launch an invasion of Europe, then you'll get the flags out. You'll be waving the Union Jack and St George with all your might and begging the 'gammons' to go and defend you. Well, I wouldn't blame them if they told you to get lost. Who the hell is going to fight for a country that hates itself, has completely lost its identity and doesn't even want to wave its own flag? Now you are going to blab on about embracing a "progressive new identity". Let me save you the bother. You can go and fight for that new identity, because I won't be.

You sound like you hate Britain.

Princesspollyyy · 19/09/2025 13:41

The migrants have migrated to England, so why should they be offended by an England flag? They are in England after all? If we went to the country they came from, presumably we would see their country’s flag, and what right would be have to take offence?

How utterly ridiculous. I can’t believe you pulled over to take flags down. 😂

They’ve had more than enough time. They just don’t want to make the difficult decisions that need to be made, being ideologically opposed to them.

What difficult decisions are those?

They've actually succeeded in sending some 'illegals' (as you lot call them) back to France, which is more than the last government ever did.

So? Is it meant to do much? France will send the same number back this weekend.

The powers that be really do despise their own people.

The working class lads have been totally left behind in this country - no one is interested in improving their lives, or solving their problems, only demonising them. They’re only seen as useful cannon fodder. It’s absolutely heartbreaking.

Not a one should go fight to defend a country that gave up on them long ago.

Speaking for myself, my national identity is a mix - Welsh, Scottish, Dutch and African. (I am white btw). I do identify as British (I was born here and my mother is British), but not just British.

This is really common as we're a nation of mongrels, essentially. How do you decide who is British and who isn't? Do you have to be able to trace your family back to the Doomsday book? (Which I can do, on my mother's side, as she's from a very old family. But my dad was African).

You don't get to define everyone or decide their national identity. Sorry.

Funny. I too am a multicultural person and from Africa. I love the UK and am proud to call it my second home. You however would not find me slaughtering goats in my back yard in the UK simply because that’s what I do back home in Africa. When I am there I abide by the rules and traditions of my hosts and do not insist that MY way of life needs to be accepted and tolerated over and above those of my hosts.

Most of the flag-wavers seem to hate everyone - everyone not born here, left leaning people, centrists. They want us all to get out of Britain and leave them to it. God knows who they think would run the hospitals etc but presumably they'd be happy dying of preventable illnesses and in squalor, so long as it was good old British squalor.

It must be exhausting being so full of hate and rage.

I live in a shithole, I between two really rough estates. Flags are everywhere here. All hanging out of windows, on lampposts.

To me, it’s just the absolute idiots who want to get involved at getting pissed and shouting at things.

Twice now, they have protested outside an empty hotel in the town. The hotel never housed immigrants, it was for local homeless families who were waiting on the council to house them (one of my DDs classmates lived there for a year with her mother while they were waiting on a council property).

Some of them were brown, the horror! And so the thickos deduced they were fresh off the boats and started protesting. Only, the council moved them all for safety when they got wind of it, as there were a lot of very young children living there.

But still they persist, shouting at an empty building, telling no one to get out. The council send people down to tell them it was never housing for immigrants and that it’s empty now anyway. The police so the same. ITV news were there for the last one telling them the same. They still insisted they were being lied to, even though it’s all locked up and clearly empty.

But there they all were, draped in flags, shouting about “pedos”, all looking completely bewildered.

So to me, where I live, it’s a symbol of people being utterly thick and kicking down instead of up.

All the lampposts down my road have flags on them. I noticed a neighbour up a ladder cutting the one directly outside his house off the day the for sale sign went up on his house, and I don’t blame him one bit.

Multiculturalism is quite obviously not a strength.

Repeating this ad nauseam don’t make it true, and people don’t believe you. They know it’s not true. They know it’s a lie. Look around you, look at this discussion - have you ever seen more division among people in this country? If it were truly a strength, these problems wouldn’t exist.

You can’t expect people to swallow these trite phrases anymore and reject the evidence of their own eyes and ears.

Of course multiculturalism is a strength. What are you on about? It's only people like you who don't get it.

Where was St George from? Was he English?

Did anyone see some people got confused and painted the Danish flag on a roundabout?

St George was from Cappodocia in central Turkey and was martyred in what is now Israel for being a Christian.

He replaced St.Edmund as England's Patron Saint. Here is St Edmund's flag which is really a white version of Y Ddraig Goch

That was simply an example of being a good guest. I’m not looking for a fight.

The British were once a very proud nation who have overcompensated for the colonial wrongs of the past by completely allowing their immigrantion policy to dilute their identity. It is going to backfire monumentally if it hasn’t already.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/09/2025 13:50

Perhaps because this is a free country, and people are allowed to have opinions which differ from your own, and to vocalise them

It seems to me, @smallpinecone, that extremists had a good run enjoying the quaking of more moderate folk when they were tagged with favourite labels, and we still see it on here when someone points out that they didn't actually say such-and-such only to be told "But that's what you meant", as if the accusers have a unique insight into minds

Trouble is such things rarely last forever and predictably the extremists aren't enjoying it now that ordinary folk are deciding they've had enough of that thanks all the same, but IMO the increased screaming and spitting's to be expected while they adjust to the new normal and it'll settle down in time

You may like multiculturalism. But it is not really a strength, is it? Or at the very least, very debatable.

Lots of countries experience violence because of their multiethnic population, political parties map to ethnic groups. I would expect the UK to eventually follow this pattern and it will be a tug of war between ethnic groups rather than political ideas.

HelpHedgehogsByFeedingThemCatBiscuits · 19/09/2025 13:29

I'm not doing anything.

I suggest you get out of your smug little bubble and talk to some `ordinary people', if you know any and attempt to find out why their is frustration with this awful government. If a bit of national pride cheers people up, why not.

And you haven't explained why you find your own flag so offensive when you don't have a problem with other nationalities celebrating theirs.

Do try to keep up with what you yourself have written! “I know I will continue putting them up wherever possible” - that’s a direct quote from you, so yes you are doing something. And you still haven’t answered why and what you hope it will achieve.

The only people this “national pride” is “cheering up” is the anti immigrant brigade. There are plenty of us who find it depressing- the opposite of cheerful. I don’t find my own country’s flag offensive in any way, so I don’t know why you’re asking me to explain why I do.

p.s. it’s there is frustration, not “their”. There’s a high correlation between the flag bearers and poor spelling and grammar. Funny, that.
