I took down some flags and DH wasn’t happy

On my commute today, I noticed someone had hung three large St George flags on a bridge coming out of our village. They have been popping up everywhere but this particular instance I thought “I’m not having that”. On the way home I pulled over and took them down.

when I got home and DH asked why I was binning three large flags I told him and he.. had some interesting opinions. He told me I shouldn’t be pissing off people in the village, that they have every right to hang an England flag in England, and that I’m being too political.

For a start, I would argue that I’ve always been quite strongly opinionated so he shouldn’t be surprised I did it.

Just as others have the right to their opinion I have mine. We have people in the village who are migrants… why should they have to look at that. It’s clear why they were hanging there given what’s going on at the moment and I’ve never see a flag hanging in the village in the decade we’ve been here so why else would they be there now.

I’m just so disappointed with it all. With the UK, with DH.

Next time maybe I’ll add to the collection instead. 🇬🇷🇮🇪🇮🇳🇦🇫🇧🇸🇵🇰🇪🇸🇸🇩🇿🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

If they were up all the time as a sign of lovely ol’ Englande, fine. But they are popping up everywhere as a sign of “get out our country” by a load of willy waving racists.

People who have risked their lives don’t need that message.

People want to put them up on their own property for the love of Blighty ? Fine, you go for it. But not public places as a sign of hate. Not in my village.

Exactly. And all the posters feigning ignorance are the problem. If the flags were out all the time then fine, but they’re not. They only seem to come out during the football and during instances of heightened racism. The flag-wavers have assigned that message to the flags-not the rest of us.

Can you clarify which numbers are “pulled out of thin air”?

I’ve just checked the precise official numbers:

Saturday’s march - 24 arrests

Pro-Palestine march - 890 arrests

Notting Hill Carnival - 528 arrests

I was talking about your disbelief in the reported size of the march. Based on nothing other than that you've been to some sports events before.
You can't get all selective about which numbers are real now can you? Either you believe the police and the media or you don't.

Why is it so hard for people to understand. The flag isn't offensive on its own, it is the motive behind the sudden increase in flags.

They don't want to understand. It would undermine their entire "just patriotic innit?" schtick.

Fingers crossed, someone will replace the flags you decided to take down.
Personally the more up the better, I know I will continue putting them up wherever possible.

Why?

You're going to cause trouble. The village are going to hate you. Wouldn't be suprised if they key your car when word gets around, you're the one taking down flags.

That just about sums up the mentality of the people putting up these flags.

So now you're going to pretend you don't know that the English Defence League (EDL) was a far-right, Islamophobic organisation founded by the thug, Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (aka Tommy Robinson) and his brother? They appropriated our national flag for their "cause" and defiled it. They're the reason that true patriots, like me, can't fly England's flag with pride (or at all). Tommy Ten Names is a violent criminal who's brought nothing but shame to our country and his acolytes are too stupid to care.

Yes, of course, they're lacking in critical thinking skills. I'd forgotten that one. Haven't seen it on a post in a few days actually.

Ha always.

Tamarasilkscarves · 19/09/2025 08:22

I don’t see why migrants would be offended by the flags!!!
People should have the right to show their feelings about what’s happening in their country, and about the boats.
When someone puts up a flag, it’s simply their way of expressing an opinion. Even if others don’t like it, it doesn’t mean they should take it down.

Taking them down is just a means of expressing a different opinion.

I don't particularly like the cornish flag either

Out of interest and digressing slightly, why not?

You do realise that arrests are a binary statistic. It either happened or it didn’t. There is no subjectivity involved.

Crowd numbers are subjective estimates and are regularly misrepresented to further agendas.

But then others are expressing their opinion by taking it down-so what’s the problem? Both sets of people are simply expressing their opinion.

The problem is that the expression of some people's "opinions" is deliberately designed designed to intimidate and frighten certain sections of the population.

I do wonder how some would feel about other flags in the bin. Just this one.

You should see Sadiq Khan’s posts on X. Couldn’t get his fill of Notting Hill Carnival, let’s just ignore the rampant crime that goes on there every year.

Oh he thinks he is the king of London.

Facts and opinions.

I’m not sure how you can consider anything subjective as a fact.

😂

If the flags belong to England then they belong to OP as well and she can do what she wants with them, including binning them.

millymollymoomoo · 19/09/2025 08:31

Love seeing all the flags.

hopefully the ones you took down will be replaced with double the amount.

love your country or go live somewhere else. Everyone living in this country should not be offended by the country’s flag

the national flag is not offensive

Prove it? The English flag is not a sign of hate and im sick to death of the rhetoric just ignore it and the ones doing it for hateful purposes will stop if you keep reacting too it they will do it more often and that's where the trouble starts

You're right. The national flag is not inherently offensive.

The appropriation of the national flag by racists is deeply offensive.

They've popped up in my street. In a tiny village that nobody even sees as they pass by on the motorway. It's one person who's decided to take a stand. Thing is, we have no asylum seekers in this village but we do have people from all over the UK and we have some Asian people, polish, Hungarian and Jamaican people who have lived here a long time. It worries me that people are going to think I'm racist and lump me in with this one person's Vendetta against people who aren't from here. I swear this place is like Royston Vasey at times!

All the people in your village who weren’t born in the UK have presumably been made to jump through lots of immigration hoops. Why would they necessarily support people coming here illegally? If they were born here, then their parents or grandparents might have been the ones having to jump through hoops. For example, Rishi Sunak’s parents were immigrants - and Rishi Sunak supported the scheme to send illegal immigrants to Rwanda.

This issue has absolutely nothing to do with “people who aren’t from here”. This has to do with illegal immigration, not legal immigration - which we desperately need. Illegal immigration, in the grand scheme of UK problems, is not one of the most serious issues. However, it’s big time hit the headlines and masses, so it needs sorting before it causes further problems. That said, the way we house illegal immigrants is very problematic - to communities, and the optics are awful as well - nice hotel rooms! I will also point out that the capital of Rwanda is safer than London. Labour stopped the Rwanda scheme the week they got into office.

The problems have nothing at all to do with racism.

Lol ok. So the numbers you like are real. Right.

Meandmyguy · 19/09/2025 08:34

I can't blame people for putting up the flags.

Your country looks fucked.

I legged it from the UK 21 years ago and now my country isn't much better.

Lots of flags popping up over here too.
