Just got back from a holiday there. It is green and lush with lots of mountains, turquoise lakes and waterfalls. It is a wonderfully safe country with low crime rates with the added attraction of being spotlessly clean. No litter anywhere. The roads are in great condition (no potholes at all).
Best of all, it is very affordable. Your money goes a lot further than in many other parts of the world.
For English tourists, it's a dream as English is widely spoken. Slovenians learn English as a second language at school. We found the Slovenians we met to be friendly and very polite people.
Finally, it is a foodies paradise. The quality is excellent.

Yanbu at all. It's lovely.

Dublassie · 16/09/2025 23:42

Totally agree ! Have skied there twice and this summer we went to Ljubljana and Bled and had the most amazing holiday !

Rainallnight · 16/09/2025 23:50

It is gorgeous. We went on a hiking holiday there in 2015 and it was amazing.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 16/09/2025 23:52

I literally watched a TV tourist show about this last night and told DH I'd like to go. It's been added to the list!

Willthiswork12 · 16/09/2025 23:53

Yabu to say you don't have to bother engaging with the language.

Icelanders all speak impeccable English but they do appreciate you making an effort to at least say hello goodbye and thank you. The locals really appreciate it. But if you don't want to bother that's your choice

Meh Slovenia was ok it didnt blow me away as Iceland did.

MMAMPWGHAP · 16/09/2025 23:54

Shhhhh. Don’t tell everyone!

It's been a mainstream destination for years. It's no secret

Have a day off. She didn’t say that you don’t have to bother having to engage with the language. She says that English is widely spoken, which obviously makes it an easier place for people who speak English to visit. That doesn’t mean the same as “don’t bother trying”. Stop reading into things that people haven’t said.

I think it is good to try new things and travel places.

I completely agree. We are lucky enough to have family living in Ljubljana. (Capital of Slovenia). The only downside I find is the abundance of graffiti.

I did try but found it difficult! Slovenian is a very hard language to master for English speakers sadly.

I'm really happy to read this - it's on my list as a destination I'd love to visit. Do you have any particular recommendations for visitors?

Peteryourhorseisheree · 17/09/2025 12:48

It’s beautiful. We went to Ljubljana and Lake Bled a few years ago and it was wonderful. So easy as an English speaker.

The Triglav national Park is beautiful. The Postojna caves are huge and truly awesome. Predjama Castle is really cool to visit. Last and not least, the iconic Lake Bled is gorgeous!
Ljubljana is a very pretty city and so easy to walk around as the centre is pedestrianised. The Ljubljana free tours are great, and also the communist tour, which is fascinating.

@BonfireToffee go to Lake Bohinj. It’s beautiful and less built up than Bled.

pinkspeakers · 17/09/2025 16:26

YANBU. We did a family summer holiday there in 2017 - and went back for a few days the following winter. Definitely one of our favourite destinations.

We are at the airport just waiting to board our flight to come home after 10 days in Slovenia. Apart from the weather, it has been great! The mountains all around are stunning. I wouldn't rave about the food either, but we've had some nice enough meals out. I would recommend if you don't like a lying on a sun lounger type of holiday.

Cyclebabble · 17/09/2025 16:41

I have been in Summer and it is equally good. We took the kids white water rafting in Bovec and also on Europe's biggest zip wire. Quite scary, but huge fun. People were lovely, place was very nice.

Agree 100% with all of this.

We had a holiday there in 2018. After a couple of nights in Llubjana we spent a week doing a self-guided walk that started up in Kransky Gora, moved on to Lake Bohinj and finished at Lake Bled. Plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful countryside.

Second week we stayed in a lovely apartment not far from Predjama castle, so close in fact we could walk to it. We also went to the Postojna caves and we loved the coastal town of Piran. Oh and a particular highlight was going out in to the forest bear watching with a guide.

Thoroughly recommend for an interesting holiday

We are also just back from 10 days in Ljubljana staying in a lovely Air B n B right under the castle. It was originally a walking holiday but due to injury became more of a sightseeing trip. It was fabulous! The people are lovely and friendly and the city feels very safe. We used buses to take day trips to various locations outside the capital. All very easy and relaxing. One of the highlights was swimming in Lake Bled. Highly recommend for a holiday.
