Dear All

ignoring Clacton what do people think of the area of Manningtree and Tendring Essex.?

Thinking of moving there and I would love some views. Alittle worried due to N Farage being the MP for Clacton etc.

thanks in advance.

Manningtree and Brantham are both nice. I live nearby.

Tallerandtall · 16/09/2025 17:15

@Codyrhodesisaheel
thank you.

any view on the country side around the village of Tendring?

You'd probably be better posting this on the MN local page for the area not AIBU. The chances of people being able to answer the question is better on a local board

GarlicPint · 16/09/2025 17:21

Yes, it's nice as long as you like flat land! Some really charming river spots. Coast not far. The villages are old, lots of historic churches and charming houses. Decent pubs. Boy racers.

I once got hopelessly lost tromping over fields around Tendring. Truly, hopelessly lost. I'm not normally that bad at finding my way, but was flummoxed by the flatness 🤣

SaveItForTheBirds · 16/09/2025 17:22

I grew up in Tendring 😄The villages around there are generally fine but there's not a lot going on and they're not as pretty as over the border in Suffolk. Some of the places on the coast are a bit grim, Clacton/Harwich/Dovercourt aren't great. Colchester's a lovely city.

Manningtree and Mistley though, are absolutely gorgeous and I would move back there in a heartbeat.

NoahDia · 16/09/2025 17:23

You've be far better off joining their local Facebook pages which would give you a better idea OP.

NoahDia · 16/09/2025 17:25

Colchester's taken a massive nosedive in the last 5 years or so unfortunately. It used to be beautiful but now it's really dirty and quite crime ridden.

My son works there and ended up moving to Brightlingsea which is great, but far too quiet for me!

Tallerandtall · 16/09/2025 17:26

@NoahDia

thanks for advice but I asked here as I hate the SM companies like Facebook whom effectively sold/made money from your data with out asking first. A social disease not media.

thats why I asked here.

so do you know the area?

Oh that's a shame, I often tell people that Colchester is really underrated! But I haven't been back for maybe 3 or 4 years so it sounds like it might have gone downhill.

Still amazing for the history though!

Tubestrike · 16/09/2025 18:16

Manningtree is lovely, my friend lives there,it's the smallest town by area in the UK.

BitOutOfPractice · 16/09/2025 18:22

I think apart from the coastal towns mentioned (with the exception of Frinton), north Essex is pretty nice. A bit quiet / rural for me but if that’s what you are after. Towns with half decent rail connections are more expensive (that includes mManningtree)

I always fancied Thaxted myself but I’m definitely more of an urban animal.

Libertylawn · 16/09/2025 18:33

Mistley is lovely. Further in, Bardfield is nice too. Colchester is for the most part, a shit hole.

IJWMM · 17/09/2025 01:19

Manningtree, Mistley and Tendring are all lovely. Manningtree station has a fast train service into London (if I recall correctly, it only stops at Colchester and Stratford before terminating at Liverpool Street).

Not too far away you’ve got Dedham (pricey). Thorpe Le Soken and Great Bentley are also nice ( I think GB has one of the largest village greens in England). Kirby Le Soken is nice too. I’ll try to dip into my memory bank to recall other places.

Would maybe help if you give a rough idea of what you’re after. Do you need to commute (and where to)? Do you want walking distance to a shop or pub? Do you need schools (what age)?

FortuneFaded · 17/09/2025 01:47

Never heard of any of them. Have a drive round the areas. One current way to tell if any area is going to suit you is check if there lots of flags and St George crosses on crossings and roundabouts there. Depending on your views, does this put you off the area, or have you found your tribe?

Tallerandtall · 17/09/2025 06:02

Thanks everyone

I don’t think Colchester is any worse than any other town to be honest and there’s been some really good summer concerts on this year, quite a lot to do. Manningtree is lovely - I used to live there and highly recommend. You can easily get to Ipswich or Colchester within 15 mins from there.

Libertylawn · 17/09/2025 17:04

Weirdly for somewhere so pretty, Tendring has the highest poverty index or something similar, for the whole of England. I think Jaywick and bit of Clackers skews it.

Tallerandtall · 17/09/2025 18:18

@Libertylawn

its doesn’t but it’s not far from the bottom.
i see it like London. If you are in Richmond you are less distance to several places people see as challenging.
