To wonder if you know what this weird system is on this Charity Shop Mac?

Got a lovely mac/trench coat today but there's this weird buttony strap thing on the collar and I can't work out what it is.

Hoping the hive mind of MN could help?

Maybe it's for a very chic scarf?

Is it under the collar on one side (the strap, not doggy) and would it button across the front of your neck/throat?

eta to stop the two sides flapping about it it was windy.

Do you undo the furthest button, pivot it 180 degrees on the near button, and button it across your neck to the other side of the collar on a cold day?

Trench coats were made for the trenches, so all highly functional.

Do you unbutton it at the back button, swing it round across the front and button on the other side of the collar to make it a bit more wind proof?

Yes, definitely a throat latch. I can remember when M&S men's trench coats had them in the early 90s, and my Aquascutum one (c2003) has one.

ETA - also allows one to use it as a cape without putting arms into sleeves.

Well you're all correct! It's jolly uncomfortable though, I have to hold my head in an unnatural position as the collar is held so high!
