I’m curious to know what the good folk of MN do with school uniform. I don’t even own an iron but I am thinking maybe I need to invest..!

Yes why wouldn’t I?- YANBU

Poly cotton shirts don't need ironing as long as you shake them before hanging up and NEVER iron them. Once you do, your doomed to always needing to. I sometimes iron jumpers but only because they feel nicer. Trousers I would but skirts I don't.

Shelllendyouhertoothbrushtoo · 15/09/2025 21:59

Very occasionally if the t-shirts are too unbearable even for me, a devout non-ironer.

KnitKnitKnitting · 15/09/2025 22:03

Nope.

I have a couple of times towards the end of the school year. I normally just tumble dry and hang the polo shirts and do find over time they get more wrinkly as they shrink a bit. But that was very much under duress!

BogRollBOGOF · 15/09/2025 22:03

The only time I iron uniform is after a laundry/ tumble dry fail when I need to get the damp out ASAP.

Otherwise there's no point. By the time my DCs have been in it for 5 minutes, it would look like it's seen a lot of life in all the wrong ways Grin

brunettemic · 15/09/2025 22:03

Nope…DH does it 😂

KnickerlessFlannel · 15/09/2025 22:04

Yes, can't bear them looking crumpled. Polo shirts for instance, the collars just look flacid without a good iron.

Anononony · 15/09/2025 22:05

Primary uniform with polo shirts you can easily get away with not needing to, but with high school proper shirts I find it does make a huge difference

FeedingPidgeons · 15/09/2025 22:05

Never. Once they are big enough to care about their appearance they are big enough to use an iron.

Mine are still at the "i dont know why I am covered in paint / lunch / snot" stage so why on earth would I bother?

For the first week and maybe photo day.

Gymbunny2025 · 15/09/2025 22:06

Yes

middleagedandinarage · 15/09/2025 22:06

Yes I do, iron sweatshirts and polo shirts. Steam skirts and pinafores

chuzzlewitthechipmunk · 15/09/2025 22:06

I never used to. DC1 went through the whole of primary school without ironed clothes, but then the tyranny of secondary school shirts started kicking in, and i noticed the difference between an ironed t shirt and not, and rhen DC3 wears skirts and the pleats from those need ironing in… so…

HeadsWinTailsLose · 15/09/2025 22:08

The children ironed their own uniforms.

Peppaisrude · 15/09/2025 22:10

It's week 2 of PFB starting reception so yes... because everything is still all fresh and new and want them look pristine for school etc. I'm sure I'll look back at this post in a couple of months time and roll my eyes at myself. (Although actually, I've suddenly started ironing my own outfits a lot more than I used to and I do feel it makes a big difference in how put together I look- so maybe this is my new thing after years of ironing perhaps once or twice a year!)

WizardofCoz · 15/09/2025 22:12

My Iron’s from Woolworths (vintage!) & this evening it took me 20 mins to locate it; I had to iron on a name tag. That’s probably all the ironing I’ll do this year.

Nomdejeur · 15/09/2025 22:15

If it needs ironing, iron it. Don’t send them in looking like they wore it to bed. If you’re lucky enough to have a uniform material that doesn’t crease, don’t iron it.

Kirbert2 · 15/09/2025 22:16

Nope. Don't even own an iron and DS is in Year 5 now.

Could have written this myself!!

Dinosweetpea · 15/09/2025 22:18

Nope, Never. Doesn't need it.

Pootle40 · 15/09/2025 22:19

Yes every morning! How do people not own an iron ? 😬😵‍💫

Myfridgeiscool · 15/09/2025 22:20

Use hair straighteners for the collars and name tags 😂

Summershutdown · 15/09/2025 22:22

School shirts yes, although not for my teen DD who doesn’t take her jumper off.

everything else doesn’t need it.

I can’t stand creases but I loathe ironing so I will only do it if I really have to.

Bsmirched · 15/09/2025 22:23

Absolutely not. Shirts don't need it and you can only see the collar anyway. Jumpers are tumble dried and taken straight out and trousers taken out, given a good shake and left to dry. Life is way too short to iron.

KellyJonesLeatherTrousers · 15/09/2025 22:26

Sunday afternoon ironing is one of DHs favourite routine, he seems to love ironing the kids shirts, I think its his ‘me’ time. If he didn’t do it I imagine I would give them an iron if needed, couldn’t send them out all crumpled.

Ironsteel · 15/09/2025 22:31

Yes. I even iron my daughter’s nursery clothes. I can’t stand anyone looking all crumpled. 🫣
