I’m curious to know what the good folk of MN do with school uniform. I don’t even own an iron but I am thinking maybe I need to invest..!

Yes why wouldn’t I?- YANBU

Nope, My DDs still wear polo shirts to school, I have enough time getting grass, paint, food stains out. DD1 plays football. Although I do have a tumble dryer so that helps.
We are an outdoorsy family so don't wear a lot of smart clothes day to day, or have office jobs, so never have felt the need to iron. Another one who doesn't own an iron at the moment.

YetanotherNC25 · 15/09/2025 22:43

Nope. I buy non iron from M&S and tumble dry, shake then hang up everything else. Never creased.
After years of ironing polo shirts for primary school I’ve done my time.
If DC’s want something (non school uniform) to wear that has creases, they can use my steamer. I refuse to iron anything.
I do steam my own clothes though, I’m not a heathen.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 15/09/2025 22:44

Always did. Shirt and proper tie school, not polo shirts.

Jamesblonde2 · 15/09/2025 22:47

Yes of course, most kids don’t want to look scruffy.

Chick981 · 15/09/2025 22:48

I never used to iron anything but I do find the polos look scruffy after a hit so I’ve started ironing them occasionally, which has in turn led to me ironing more of my own stuff (very occasionally, when I can be bothered).

Wtafdidido · 15/09/2025 22:49

All uniform ironed and school shoes polished every Sunday evening.

Tisfortired · 15/09/2025 22:50

Of course. It’s the only thing I do iron.

ShesTheAlbatross · 15/09/2025 22:56

Pootle40 · 15/09/2025 22:19

Yes every morning! How do people not own an iron ? 😬😵‍💫

Every morning? That cannot be the most efficient way to do it! Why not do a whole batch at the weekend?

I actually don’t iron school uniform. But when I used to iron my own (I was in charge of the whole family’s ironing), I did everything Sunday afternoon. I did not faff about with an iron every morning!

TokyoSushi · 15/09/2025 22:58

Yes, every single item, every single day. I absolutely hate ironing, but I can’t bear to send them in unironed, I am ridiculous!

Thissickbeat · 15/09/2025 23:00

Never. It went on the washing line which blew the creases out.

SparklingRivers · 15/09/2025 23:00

Anononony · 15/09/2025 22:05

Primary uniform with polo shirts you can easily get away with not needing to, but with high school proper shirts I find it does make a huge difference

Have you tried the "non-iron" asda ones? They look fine just hung to dry or hung up straight after tumble drying.

Pharazon · 15/09/2025 23:05

Nope. Neither I nor DC care enough to do it.

CouldNotStayAway · 15/09/2025 23:27

i Iron uniforms and all other clothing; it gets done on a Sunday- takes 2 hours, sometimes longer (I think of all the calories I’m burning 😁)

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 15/09/2025 23:32

Yes on a Sunday evening I iron all the week's polo shirts - purely personal preference.

aneelli · 15/09/2025 23:36

When I had just th me two school children, I religiously ironed all their uniforms. It’s far too much work for me now so the only thing I’ll iron is the shirts, as they look creased severely if I don’t. I remember as a kid myself, we used to laugh at a boy that would come in with un-ironed shirts - I know that was mean of us. That’s why I can’t let my kids go school with creased shirts. But the jumpers and trousers don’t really require it so they no longer get ironed.

Sunbeam01 · 15/09/2025 23:38

Yes I iron the kids clothes - every item, every day regardless of school day or not.

That being said, I think I could get away with about 70 per cent if I owned a tumble dryer.

NuovaPilbeam · 15/09/2025 23:40

How the hell do you iron a sweatshirt!!

If you wash with fabric softener, shake out and dry them hung properly they aren't creased. I buy non iron shirts, trousers and pinafores and never iron any of it.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 15/09/2025 23:44

Nope. My DD does her own (13) as she wants perfection.

My DS is happy with the mild crumplage you get when 'non iron' uniform comes out of the tumble dryer.

I do, yes. I wear a uniform to work which I iron as well.

I have never even once ironed a school uniform. And somehow, all is well.

MumChp · 16/09/2025 01:05

No. My son ironed his secondary uniform. Good for him.

Fourlovelychildren · 16/09/2025 09:53

I used to and then I challenged myself on whether it was really necessary.

There is, to my mind, a huge difference between ‘hung out straight from the dryer’ and ‘I just fished this out of the bottom of a basket of clean washing’. There is a family at school whose three children all come in clothes in the later category and it is noticeable from a mile away, whereas I think most wear uniform in the first category and no one notices or cares. If something has become very crumpled I will still iron it.

Basically there’s a spectrum between slightly crumpled and very creased.

Comedycook · 16/09/2025 09:56

I used to iron school trousers when ds was at school. DD is still at school...I iron her shirts at the collar so they lie flat. That's it though. The jumpers and skirts don't need ironing

SJM1988 · 16/09/2025 09:59

Yes. I don't iron most of my clothes but 100% do the kids uniform. The polo shirts always seem to be creased no matter how I hang them up to dry. We probs could get away with not doing the shorts though.

CoffeePoleaze · 16/09/2025 10:01

Yes. Dh & I both do it. Polo shirts mainly and a quick steam of the pinafore/skirt.

It makes the uniform look so much nicer, I’m not into the crumpled, just got out of bed look!
