One in one out: return to France

I am a permanent resident in France. I was just reading an article about the first batch of "one in, one out" detainees who are likely to be returned to this side of the Channel this week.
I really don't get it: France is a much nicer place to live than the UK. We have more space, for one thing (same sort of number of inhabitants, twice the size).
AIBU to think that they had reached a safe place and were incredibly stupid to risk their lives crossing the Channel, not to mention the fortune they have paid to the profiteering scum of the earth who run the boats.
Nobody is talking about sending them to Rwanda or back to Afghanistan or wherever. They should just apply for settlement here and build a new life....the UK is not the paradise they seem to believe. And once they are settled here there will actually be safe, legal ways to cross the Channel to be with their families.... Or the families can visit them here.

Good point. And the wine is a lot cheaper too. Great selection of cheese. I think a lot of it is right wing hysteria.

How do the French people treat the migrants? Are migrants very welcome there? Do they get groups of French people outside hotels threatening to burn them down?

We have a few French speaking asylum seekers accommodated for some time now in a hostel in a nearby village (we are in southern France)..it's not big numbers and I've not heard of any conflict with locals so far...

The OP asks why the pull of the UK?
One obvious reason is language, I suspect it would be tough to be a non French speaker to go through the system here..

The other reason is I suspect that the French labour market is highly controlled (in terms of needing qualifications earned in France) regulated and checked....

They speak English and were colonised by this country. Most are from Afghanistan according to the ONS.
