To remove the parking cones?

i have a tight turnaround for the school run each morning as need to catch a train to office (commute to London). The only way to make it logistically possible is to drive to school breakfast club, drop kids off at 7.30ish then walk to station near school so I can get to office for 9am. Then the car is there when I pick up at 6pm later in the day so I can make pickup easily too. School is on a residential road, with on street open marked parking spaces there are usually a few spaces at 7.30 with no timing restrictions, I assume as some residents have left for work. However, I’ve noticed since the new term has started, a random traffic cone has been put in the middle a couple of the spaces, which I believe has been put there by those living on the road to stop people parking outside their house. If this is the case, would you think it would be unreasonable to move the cone to park if there is no other close by parking space?

I know the Mumsnet consensus is that a public road is a free for all, but I can’t imagine how frustrating it is for residents who have to live on a road with both a school and commuter parking.

Can you not park at the station?

why is that frustrating?

I live in a residential area - it's relevant, it's not a city centre where you park where you can. Generally no one parks in front of someone else's house, because there's no need.

If someone parks in front of your house, as long as they don't block the drive, or park directly opposite making it difficult to come in and out, what's the problem?

It's only unreasonable when they decide to park there all the time instead of their own house because they don't like the view (that's when I get petty and start parking in front of their house instead of my drive, I can't help it😂)

As many people have pointed out, there is other street parking in nearby streets to the school, but none without houses, so I could probably park in another road / find somewhere else a few minutes away but would always be parking outside of someone's house for the day. I think, given that people have pointed out the risk of damage, I wont move the cones, but i will just find another house nearby to park outside of (hopefully mix it up a bit each day if other spots become empty). I've looked at the parking apps as suggested but cant see anything between the school and the right side of the station.

WHY should anyone pay for parking when you can park for free (safely and without being inconsiderate to others), just why?

I suspect that the people who live closest to the school are the ones that see the greatest impact of parking disruption, so you might find there is less upset parking 3 minutes walk away, and as you say mixing it up each day so it's not always the same house. There's nothing at all wrong with parking in front of someone's house so don't let that trouble you

The OP has already explained why this doesn't work for her.

She pays her council tax, the same as the residents. She has an equal entitlement to park there.

Seems lacking from many posters.

Perhaps she would, if she could catch the train in time when she does that - but she’s explained it’s generally too tight and would make her late to work.

In the wise worlds of my grandad...

"You can't reserve a public park bench"

Who then proceeded to lay the abandoned bags and coats on the grass next to the bench.

You cant reserve a legally parkable public space either. I get it might be annoying for residents but its just something they need to deal with.

Lets be frank, there's actually nothing stopping you park on somebody else's drive, the police cant do anything about that.

Unless the cones have been put there by authorised roadworks or local authority they are just a deterant.

This is not advice, I am not trained in law, for entertainment purposes only 😉

WhiskyintheJarr · 16/09/2025 17:19

The guy across the road from me has created a driveway in his garden (no dropped kerb) and has a passive aggressive little sign asking that people don’t park so as to block the entrance to his “driveway”. So essentially trying to reserve a space on a residential road without actually parking in it.

His little sign gets mixed results.

I have a driveway so it doesn’t affect me but I have pondered where I would stand legally if I blocked him in, given that it’s not an official driveway and there is no dropped kerb. I probably wouldn’t because I’m not generally a twat but I am curious.

Widower2014 · 16/09/2025 17:36

Imagine coming back at six to find residents have blocked you in. Why not ask the school if you can park in their car park

Andthelittleonesaidrollover · 16/09/2025 17:37

I wonder where the residents park when they go out? Presumably they sometimes have the need to park in a public street they also don't live on!

I would (like to, but probably too chicken) take their cone, put it in my car. And when I come to collect my car that evening, leave my own (different colour) cone in it's place to make sure my place is saved for the next day! 😁

MummaMummaMumma · 16/09/2025 17:37

Definitely move the cone.
To ensure you can always park outside your house is the exact reason you buy a house with a driveway, otherwise anyone is free to park in the street.

WFHforevermore · 16/09/2025 17:39

Yeh, i'd be keying your car. Stop being cheap and pay to park at the station.

I'm genuinely flabbergasted at all the people suggesting that criminal damage is a proportionate response to other people not treating the public highway as though it is your own personal property.

limetrees32 · 16/09/2025 17:49

@WhiskyintheJarr I know of a resident local to me who used his forecourt to park without a dropped curb .He was billed by the council for damage to the pavement

I get why that’s frustrating but I’d be reluctant to move them, purely because of an experience I had a while back when I had to oversee some electrical repair work at a relatives house. UK Power Networks had to dig up the road to do something with the cables and they’d put cones out the night before because if anyone had parked there it would have been impossible for the work to be completed until the cars were moved

Our village fb group was awash with outraged people bemoaning the cones when there wasn’t even any work being done. True, but there was going to be work the following morning, hence the cones. So there was in fact a valid reason for the cones to be there even though the outraged drivers didn’t know what the reason was.

For that reason I’d leave the cones alone and park somewhere else. As mentioned upthread, they might need those spaces left clear for genuine reasons and without asking them I wouldn’t want to assume

They were foolish - and I'd say negligent - not to leave a sign along with the cones to explain who had coned it off and why they needed to do it. Even just a standard logoed sign saying 'UK Power Networks' would have been sufficient.

Some utilities/companies even put letters through the doors of people who live nearby, just to let them know.

A sign would have been such a simple thing to do and and would have quickly prevented people from quite legitimately wanting to know why their usual legal parking availability had been removed without any indication whatsoever of why it was necessary.

Some people don't seem to realise that, just because they know what they're doing, other people won't know, as they don't live inside their head - and it seems that even quite large companies are sometimes guilty of this too.

If it’s a city (as opposed to rural) why is everyone driving their kids to school?

Because that's the way it is? 🤣 ive never stopped anyone to ask them but im guessing its because they are heading to work after. People drive their kids to school in cities girl

It's a more considerate solution, which she might eventually have to make 'work'. HTH
