To think nostalgia is just people editing out all the bad bits of the past?

“Things were better back then”, were they? Or do we just forget the rubbish bits? AIBU to think nostalgia is selective memory, not reality?

Oh hello, random three words name poster with a really abstract 'discuss' thread. Why don't you share some of your own experiences that make you think this?

I'm nostalgic for the days on here when there weren't daily faux discussion posts from a poster with a random three word username

Or maybe it’s just an observation, not every thread has to be a memoir.

Not every thread has to be a content scraping exercise, either. Contribute something yourself! When do you mean by 'back then'?

Rarely have I agreed more with a post - @PullTheBricksDown bravo, bravo, bravo!

That’s what baz luhrman said so it must be true.

It’s true OP. We forget the bad bits, mostly, and remember the good times. I remember that the summers were always sunny when I was a child. Except I grew up somewhere notoriously rainy, 2 thirds of the year including summer! So I am clearly just editing out the days stick indoors bored and remembering the beach days, the long bright evenings, the icecream etc

Yes YABU I think. So what if people choose to remember the past through more rose tinted specs. Let them have their memories. It's not harming anyone.

Things are pretty rubbish right now but remembering the long, hot summer of a year in the 90s or early 00s brings me joy, nostalgia and a sense of calm. I know there were terrible things happening, I lived through a fair few of them but if I have to remember those as well as witness current shenanigans I may not want to get out of bed in the morning.

I think it's true, but generally, your early years are simpler and without the complications of later life, and I think that's what I yearn for. I'm nearly 50 and got so many stresses with teen kids, work, money, elderly parents. So i look back at my 20s when I was single and had the time and energy to go out with friends several nights a week and had hobbies and travelled. Music of that time makes me so nostalgic. However, I do remember that I was single for years and a bit lonely, never knew if I'd meet someone, and very directionless, changing jobs and moving every year. I was carefree though which I am not now!
