Parents said my maternity photos were “erotic”

Ttcgirl89 · 14/09/2025 13:42

I had maternity photos taken on the beach when I was pregnant. I live in Australia and am from NZ and recently my parents came to visit us and meet our baby. I was looking through photos and my dad said that the maternity photos were “erotic” and my stepmum agreed. My brother asked what we were talking about and my Dad was like “you don’t wanna look at them, they’ll make you blush”.

I sent the photos to them after I had them done months ago and I thought they were so lovely and special. They were taken at “our beach” where my husband and I swim in summer I am wearing a dress in all of the photos and my bra is covered, with the buttons down the front undone to show the belly. My husband and I don’t see anything erotic about these photos at all and I was shocked that they thought that. I feel really awkward and embarrassed now that I sent them to them if that’s what they thought about them!

Is this a weird reaction to seeing your daughter’s maternity pictures?

Eyecatching for sure!
My wife wouldn't have wanted these, but each to their own of course.

He seems to make a lot of money out it, depending how busy he is of course.

Google beer belly maternity pics for some light relief folks. Eg https://www.boredpanda.com/20-hilarious-beer-belly-maternity-photos/

Call me a humourless misery. idgaf, but I’m so sick of men mocking women like this for every aspect of their lives.

@Notmyreality Precisely Wink.

I suppose your dad doesn’t really wanted to be confronted with the fact that his baby girl is having sex. 🫣.
Yes I know you will soon have an actual baby but thats a new person to love.

He seriously needs to grow up then.
And yes, OP, I also find it a weird and disconcerting comment for him to make.

This. And I would see “gazes adoringly” as hard to do and not make it seem lascivious

Yes, it seems really inappropriate.

Very artistic.

I think it’s nice you had pictures done OP and have a lovely memento for a time in your life that was special for you.
I don’t see anything wrong with people wanting to celebrate their pregnancy and take pictures for themselves to look back on an happy time and you didn’t splash the pictures all over social media.

I can also see why some people aren’t comfortable with looking at baby bumps, they make me feel a bit squeamish - especially some of the pictures women have taken that are intended to be erotic and they are fully or partially naked. I am happy to celebrate someone’s pregnancy but don’t need to celebrate or think of the conception and it feels like that’s the image some of these pictures are trying to achieve 😂.

Not everyone enjoys being pregnant and for some people it’s not for them at all.

I think you have had some harsh replies and there are some mean spirited comments on here. I find it frustrating though that because some people have simply stated they don’t enjoy seeing pregnant bellies that others have commented that they must be bitter or jealous that the didn’t experience pregnancy or have passed that stage in life. It’s hypocritical that in some of these responses people are saying that it’s wrong to criticise others choices then use it as an insult that those who choose not to get pregnant must be bitter and resentful for missing out!

I really don’t understand why some people think that their own choices and experiences must be what everyone else would want. I just think we should accept people are different and not judge and if it’s not affecting you in any way then there is no need to give negative comments. It’s fine to have and share an opinion on things, that’s what makes a good discussion but there is no need to insult people who do things differently.

You’ve been a good sport despite some of the uncalled for responses and this thread has been amusing when you bypass the negativity.

Weird thread. Nothing lovelier than a pregnant belly, and nothing icky about documenting it.

In your view. Plenty of people here have said its icky (including myself) I can't bear them.

Op

I hope you are still giggling along

My next tip when you see a pic of your dad on holiday is to reply with a very arch ' ooh a bit erotic dad'

point will be made and everyone will lol

minishiteboard · 14/09/2025 17:40

I don't like them
Always look painfully distended, like you need a massive fart

LibbyOTV · 14/09/2025 14:01

I think this is a tricky one. I can see why that's embarrassing but i sort of see what they might mean.

Think of it as the difference between you sitting pregnant on the beach in a plain swimsuit with no makeup on eating a sandwich and the photo you sent them - assuming you were wearing a decent amount of makeup, and had revealing clothes showing your body and were trying to look lovely. That's the difference I guess and why you might call that erotic.

I think sexualising ourselves and our bodies as girls and women is so normal nowadays that we've lost touch of what we're doing (e.g. pouting or sticking your bum out) - and how obvious it is to everyone else that it is about looking sexually attractive (even if were not consciously doing it). Think of women in older black and white photos- also taken by a photographer, as yours were.

Those who are not used to this new hypersexualisation + constant photos, like other generations, are the ones who point it out. These may look like the kinds of photo that they and other people today would only send their lover...

Does that make sense ? Hard to know without seeing the photos though!

It is awkward they said that but also good that they could and that you know now I guess?

Agree with this.
OP says and I was proud of what my body was doing....

But bodies do so all the time, fine to be proud but not everyone wants to see it. They can be equally proud without seeing the photos.

I'm the same as PP who can't stand a pregnant belly, whether mine or a loved one's. Could never put my hand on someone else's voluntarily.

Having photos sent and shown to visitors is much. I'd just delete or make the right sounds.

Good that they spoke up, so no need to send future pregnancy ones is any.

Only if he's posing for a photoshoot with his shirt or trousers unbuttoned.

Hahahaha no!!! Nothing like that 🤣💀 literally my husband is wearing a long sleeved shirt and trousers and I am wearing a maxi dress but undone at the front to show my belly. Bra is not showing. I am absolutely not nude. I guess I just don’t find a pregnant belly erotic and didn’t expect other people to either!

Don’t mind your parents
They’re just being old fashioned !!!!!

Congrats on your pregnancy 🎈. I hope everything goes really well for you .. ☺️

I know this is not the issue, but I’m struggling to get the point of a photo like that. Why does your belly have to be bare? Wouldn't the bump be visible through clothes, especially tight-fitting ones?

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 14/09/2025 17:55

Ttcgirl89 · 14/09/2025 14:50

Interesting, even though in a bikini there is way more skin showing?

From a male perspective, yes. Something being erotic isn't really related to how naked someone is. For instance, underwear and bikini = just as much skin revealed, yet a woman in her underwear is far more erotic than bikini. Equally, a woman fully dressed yet revealing some skin that wouldn't usually be revealed could be considered more erotic than in a bikini.

For work last year, I had to spend more time than I'd like looking through something called the Amateur Voyeur Forum. Involved a lot of people scouring through photographers websites trying to find unpassworded boudoir galleries and the like. Maternity galleries seemed to be very very popular on there, so some people at least definitely find them erotic.

ItsNotMeEither · 14/09/2025 18:00

I'm in Australia, on the Gold Coast and I've never personally come across a maternity shoot on the beach. I'm sure that they do happen though.

I'm sorry, as this will probably sound offensive, but they do seem to be a certain demographic that has them, I'm thinking cashed up bogan. I'm prepared to be wrong about that though, as maybe everyone is getting them, but only the cashed up bogans are sharing them online.

My guess is that your mum and dad are from an era that just didn't do these things at all. Film was expensive, getting photos developed was more expensive and so this is a far more recent phenomenon. That said, when a friend has posted theirs or shared them with me, I've always made a nice comment. It's a shame that your parents weren't a little more tactful. It's possibly a bit like thinking about your own parents having sex. Nobody wants to think about that. For your parents, they're probably really looking forward to your child being born, but they don't want to think about how this happened.

Honestly, if you want some nice photos of you and your growing baby, then go ahead. They will be lovely memories, for you. They're really not for anyone who you're not close to though, and possibly not for the older generation.

😂 How old do you think OP's dad is, @ItsNotMeEither?

Tuesdayschild50 · 14/09/2025 18:04

They sound a bit prudish like a lot of brits.. being pregnant can be a beautiful special time so enjoy it but keep your pics to yourself I wouldn't send my dad or brother pics of my tummy or anything though just keep them for yourselves and baby in the future it's a personal & private time too.

Delphiniumandlupins · 14/09/2025 18:05

Could you not have found something to wear that showed off your uncovered belly, without making it look as if you were in the middle of getting undressed? I think that's the element that will have made your father feel uncomfortable?

AnxietySloth · 14/09/2025 18:07

I mean, about 20 years ago my brother and SIL gave my parents an actual printed photo of their baby crowning so yeah... A bump photoshoot is very mild in my family. (My parents were absolutely horrified.)

Delphiniumandlupins · 14/09/2025 18:18

Ttcgirl89 · 14/09/2025 15:44

Idk I guess I thought the people in my life who were excited for my to be pregnant would also want to see it. My family live overseas from me and I hadn’t seen them in almost three years so they hadn’t seen me pregnant and I suppose I wanted them to.

Have they ever seen you photographed as you were getting undressed, though? They could be excited by your growing bump without that.
