I take these supplements every day

Every day for about 20 years I've taken a daily cod-liver oil or Omega 3 supplement. Yes, I know I should get Omega 3 by eating oily fish twice a week, but realistically I'm not going to do that. For the last 2 years I've added a vitamin D supplement on GP's advice. I never get colds or flu, skipped all the covid despite working throughout, have healthy blood pressure and in my mid 60s still work full time. It feels almost like a superstition to take Omega 3 now. I'm not sure the evidence for it helping brain health is even that strong. AIBU to continue taking fish oils daily? What supplements do you swear by and why?

Due to finding out all my levels were ridiculously low I now take vit d, c, e, iron, folic acid, cod liver oil, calcium, magnesium, zinc. I definitely feel better for it though I feel like I should rattle like a pill bottle after taking them all😅

PersephoneParlormaid · 14/09/2025 07:23

I take a good quality omega 3 for joint pain.
Vit B complex for energy.
D3 &K2 for bones.
Magnesium glycinate for sleep.
I will add in vit C with zinc if I get a cold.

Viot · 14/09/2025 07:25

I take magnesium because I get flickery eye twitch when I stop.
I take iron because I'm fainty.
I take B complex because I think it keeps me calmer.
Sometimes I take glucosamine for my joints.

I do worry a bit though. I read an article about long-term organ damage caused by taking supplements at much higher concentrations than would naturally occur in a healthy diet. I wish I could go to a 'supplement consultant' who could prescribe a sensible array of supplements. I suppose anyone with that level of expertise would have to be a doctor though.

APTPT · 14/09/2025 07:25

Collagen for joints
B12 as am veggie
Iron
Creatine
Should take Vitamin D.

Allthings · 14/09/2025 07:27

@APTPT what collagen do you take as a veggie?

PurBal · 14/09/2025 07:30

I take vitamin c with quercetin (natural antihistamine), iron, b12, and a combined magnesium, vitamin D, calcium and zinc combo which I started taking for extreme fatigue (ditto b12 and iron). I also take an antihistamine on GP advice. I’m considering changing the combined one to magnesium and ashwaganda at bedtime with a separate vitamin D.

@Viot interesting about organ damage, do you have the article?

Woompund · 14/09/2025 07:34

I take loads
B12 and vegan omega 3 (because vegan)
zinc and two probiotics for mouth ulcers
D for wellbeing
magnesium glycinate for sleep
creatine for health and sleep
i also rarely get ill but I also eat very little sugar these days and sugar is linked to lower immunity.

SeptConkers · 14/09/2025 07:35

My parents are well into their 80s both taken lots of supplements the last 30yrs looking good on it. Mine are creeping up I take VitD, B12, magnesium and creatine. Iron supplement also played around with a few others but they haven’t stayed.,I can’t tolerate the omega capsules they give me fishy heart burn reflux - can anyone recommend ones that don’t as I would like to be able to?

I am trying one from Amazon simply called "Vegan Collagen Advanced." It's bearable just about. The Holland and Barret one I took previously was disgusting and triggered reflux.

pippapipps · 14/09/2025 07:36

I take vitamin B12 as I've been a vegetarian for 32 years, vitamin D3 & K2 as my vitamin D was 25 a few years ago, vitamin C, magnesium citrate for my palpitations as I saw it recommended last year by a doctor and an iron spray every second day as I've been mildly anaemic forever

coravantexel · 14/09/2025 07:38

I take a multivitamin, cod liver oil, a probiotic and collagen. I also take creatine before a workout. It’s a lot of pills! I have a rubbish immune system and this helps me not get ill.

I've been getting a lot of mouth ulcers this last year and read that I could be possibly low in zinc..don't know why the ulcers keep occurring very painful at times! what zinc do you take? Do probiotics help?

LifeIsTooFlippingShort · 14/09/2025 07:44

Lots of people taking targeted supplements rather than a catch-all multi vitamin. That's interesting. My problem is I'm not sure if fish oils are helping me stay healthy or if I'm just convincing myself they are. I think the body of research is inconclusive. Interesting to see the supplements people swear by. I probably should be looking at supplements targeted at healthy ageing at this stage of my life.

They do. My DH watched this long YouTube video about oral health and they were promoting a test you can take for the mouth biome? I looked it up and it costs several hundred ££ so instead I asked ChatGPT what kind of supplements would be suggested following this test and they gave me 3 - I tried all 3 and then dropped the third one because the lozenges went all sticky and stuck together so I had to bin them. The first two I found on eBay fairly cheaply. Take them with a meal.

  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG
  • Lactobacillus reuteri
  • Streptococcus salivarius K12
oh sorry missed the zinc question - I just get one from Holland and Barrett
BlueEyedBogWitch · 14/09/2025 07:48

I take:

NMN for healthy ageing, general energy and wellbeing.
Mushroom Complex for gut health.
Turmeric for my joints.
A probiotic, also for my gut.

I don’t bother with Vit D in summer as I’m outside all the time, but will probably start up again soon.

Interested in creatine…

Anecdotal evidence, but it's still really good to hear 😁

What's NMN please?

Vitamin D daily
magnesium daily
creatine x3 or 4 a week
collagen when I remember 🤦‍♀️
plan on adding fish oil as I really don't get it from my diet.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 14/09/2025 07:54

Used to take iron but had a course from the GP a while back and since having the mirena coil periods which were causing the anemia have stopped so don't bother with that any more

NotMyRealAccount · 14/09/2025 07:56

Creatine 3g daily. I don't know whether I'm a responder, but I haven't had any side effects and it has a good long term safety record.
Low dose vitamin D in winter.
Ferrous sulfate 200mg on alternate days for 6 weeks after each blood donation.
I suppose my HRT could be considered a supplement.

Peakcentral · 14/09/2025 08:01

Creatine. It’s been incredible for mental clarity.

This is so interesting. Creatine wasn't even on my radar. I'm off to research it now, given that quite a few people mention it.

High dose vitamin D most of the year (kind of forget in summer but do take one now and then). It makes a noticeable difference to my mood, I feel so much more cheerful when I take them. Blood tests have only ever shown that's what I'm low in, so that's all I take so far.

Goldleafcat · 14/09/2025 08:06

Following this with interest as I’ve been introducing a few different things in the last 9 months or so, but not necessarily noticed a difference or improvement, with the exception of creatine. I don’t take it every day but when I have taken it on days when I had exercise planned (reformer Pilates in my case), I did find it helped! The workout was easier. I wasn’t expecting it to do anything after experiences with other things (collagen, I’m looking at you) so when I noticed the difference I was pleasantly surprised.

Another vote for Vitamin D here - I introduced the Better You spray around a year ago and avoided a lot of colds and coughs in comparison with the Winter before (where I was constantly ill it felt… but I do have a DS in nursery). It’s not a miracle worker though as I’m currently trying to shake off tonsillitis which I caught from DS. Getting to revisit childhood illnesses as an adult, not sure I’d recommend!

Tupperwarefan · 14/09/2025 08:14

is a decent multivitamin just as good as taking a mixture of tablets every day?
