I take these supplements every day

Every day for about 20 years I've taken a daily cod-liver oil or Omega 3 supplement. Yes, I know I should get Omega 3 by eating oily fish twice a week, but realistically I'm not going to do that. For the last 2 years I've added a vitamin D supplement on GP's advice. I never get colds or flu, skipped all the covid despite working throughout, have healthy blood pressure and in my mid 60s still work full time. It feels almost like a superstition to take Omega 3 now. I'm not sure the evidence for it helping brain health is even that strong. AIBU to continue taking fish oils daily? What supplements do you swear by and why?

Vitamin D3
NMN - nicotinamide mononucleotide - for energy, cognitive function, cell renewal, ageing well
Magnesium glycinate for sleep
Omega 3

The Omega 3 was recommended by my specialist menopause doctor, she said there is some good evidence behind it re cognitive function over time

SunnyCoco · 14/09/2025 08:21

Vitamin D
Magnesium
Collagen
Creatine (only after a workout)
Prescription iron

LovingLimePeer · 14/09/2025 08:23

Look up 'information is beautiful snake oil 2.'
It has a beautifully presented infographic about the evidence for supplements with links to relevant studies about the supplements.

APTPT · 14/09/2025 08:28

Creatine is so well-researched and the majority of people respond. It helps a lot with my workouts-- all my lifts have increased and I get less fatigue.

stayathomer · 14/09/2025 08:30

Just googled creatine and they don’t recommend for people with asthma or diabetes. Just to let people know just in case

eta after reading conflicting stuff on the asthma, it’s a bit of a minefield

BigButtons · 14/09/2025 08:44

I test out all sorts - some stick - others get dropped.
I have pernicious anemia after COVID so have to have a b12 spray everyday - I really notice if I don’t take it .
a nutrition geeks biotin/ zinc/ selenium supplement has made a massive difference to my nails. I got some on the off chance, not expecting anything but they are really strong and long now whereas before they were like tissue paper.
I take a d3/k2 supplement all year
somw omega three are coming in the post today.
my diet is erratic and I often don’t bother to eat.
i also supplement with protein shakes and creatine

With regards to the comment on organ damage, I'm not a doctor but two thoughts:

A) the NHS has a page on loads of vitamins etc which has "less than X dose likely to be fine", which I've used to try and keep the amounts reasonable.

B) I've taken a basic a-z multivit (boots one with iron) pretty consistently for years, at a recent health check was told my levels of the things they checked were excellent, as were my liver/kidney function tests. So no damage being caused (yet, I guess).

Lifestooshort71 · 14/09/2025 09:04

I take -
Adcal D3
A general Vit D
Vit C
Cod liver oil capsule
Magnesium Glycinate (for sleep)
A pro- and pre-biotic
Biotin
I'm on a cancer-preventative drug and also have regular bone infusions so the calcium+vit D are lifesavers.

YetanotherNC25 · 14/09/2025 10:13

Collagen in morning coffee
Cod Liver oil capsules (was given the liquid as a child daily, never again!)
Multivitamins + Iron
Magnesium
Thiamine (protects your liver, although I don’t drink a lot, but stops me being bitten by every bloody flying insect in the summer).

I do have a healthy diet but these top me up and I’m rarely ill and have no joint pain at all.

This is so interesting. Creatine wasn't even on my radar. I'm off to research it now, given that quite a few people mention it.

Very glad i read your comment, just found & skimmed: “Creatine Supplementation in Women’s Health: A Lifespan Perspective”
here: https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/13/3/877?utm_source=chatgpt.com
gotta have a search for supplement now, thanks all.
edited to add (incase it helps) Conclusion:
” As a result of changes in creatine homeostasis across the lifecycle, particularly as it relates to estrogen, creatine supplementation appears to provide many potential benefits for females. Creatine use has consistently demonstrated improvements in muscle and brain PCr levels, which has been shown to result in improvements in strength and exercise capacity. When combined with resistance training, creatine further augments body composition and bone mineral density, particularly in post-menopausal females. Creatine supplementation has also been shown to improve mood and cognition. A traditional loading dose (0.3 g∙day −1 5–7 days) or a routine daily dose (5 g) for 4 weeks can be effective for females. For brain saturation, higher doses (15–20 g∙day −1 for 3–7 days, followed by 5–10 g∙day −1 ) of creatine are warranted. Future data evaluating more specific effects of creatine across the menstrual cycle will help to more clearly understand the varied benefits at different phases of the menstrual cycle and potential for use across the lifespan.”

APTPT · 14/09/2025 11:53

Creatine is amazing and the only supplement I have taken where I could really feel the good effects of it within weeks.

Noddy21 · 14/09/2025 11:56

I take

magnesium 3 in 1
probiotic
lions mane
tumeric
biotin
vit d3 with k2
omega 3

Squirrelsnut · 14/09/2025 12:17

Tupperwarefan · 14/09/2025 08:14

is a decent multivitamin just as good as taking a mixture of tablets every day?

It's not. It's better to establish which supplements might benefit you (sometimes the answer is "none", as it was for me for most of my adult life) and find out the optimal dose and the best way of taking them, including timing them around meals, other supplements, and any medication you might be taking. Also check whether there are any reasons that you shouldn't take that supplement and any side effects worth looking out for.

The best thing that can be said about most over the counter multivitamins is that they're generally harmless.

RobertaFirmino · 14/09/2025 13:07

Cod liver oil for my joints, Perfectil for hair and nails then L-Carnitine as I find it helps my get up and go.

Awrite · 14/09/2025 13:44

Creatine and schisandra in my morning coffee.

Magnesium and nattokinase tablets with breakfast.

D3 and K2 under the tongue spray.

B12 twice a week.

I go through phases of vit c and Bio-kult.

I'd like to add the omegas.

I definitely feel the benefit.

LifeIsTooFlippingShort · 14/09/2025 16:26

@catwalking @APTPT I'm going to give Creatine a try. As others have noted, selective supplements can't (generally) hurt, might help!

Thanks @NotMyRealAccount Never thought about it like that.

CharlotteCChapel · 14/09/2025 18:53

Im currently on 800 vitamin D3 and iron supplements. Both of these were prescribed by the hospital and I drop to D3 400 later this week.

Dearg · 14/09/2025 19:11

Op, still digesting all the comments, but for what it’s worth my vet tells me Omega 3 is the single best thing I can do for my dogs joints - better than chrondontin & glucosamine So I take it too. So stick with it.

Of to research the others , but I also recommend Plant Sterol tablets for keeping cholesterol within limits.

DiscoBob · 14/09/2025 19:29

I'm prescribed a bunch.

A multivitamin and mineral
Folic acid
Thiamine
B vit complex
Vit D/calcium

I know that I feel a lot better than I did before I started taking them. Much more energy, less nerve pain.

SeptConkers · 15/09/2025 05:10

@Dearg do you need special or different formulation for the dog? I’m interested in what omega to give our ddog

SeptConkers · 15/09/2025 05:40

Think I’m just going to start giving her sardines once a week she’ll love them

thebeautifulsky · 15/09/2025 07:41

Can anyone recommend a good Omega 3?

Currently take Vitamin D and Magnesium glycinate.
