I take these supplements every day

Every day for about 20 years I've taken a daily cod-liver oil or Omega 3 supplement. Yes, I know I should get Omega 3 by eating oily fish twice a week, but realistically I'm not going to do that. For the last 2 years I've added a vitamin D supplement on GP's advice. I never get colds or flu, skipped all the covid despite working throughout, have healthy blood pressure and in my mid 60s still work full time. It feels almost like a superstition to take Omega 3 now. I'm not sure the evidence for it helping brain health is even that strong. AIBU to continue taking fish oils daily? What supplements do you swear by and why?

@SeptConkers I give her Vegetology Omega-3, which is actually human grade, and plant sourced rather than Fish oil, so suitable for vegetarians.

I do buy it from Just be Kind animal products (online) They also do an oil which is animal specific but my fussy miss would not eat that.

I am currently trying to work out if it is any better or worse for her than the Omega 369 by UKHealthHouse which I take myself ; it’s a lot cheaper ( but not suitable for vegetarians).

Salmon oil is usually well received!

Lots of people taking targeted supplements rather than a catch-all multi vitamin. That's interesting. My problem is I'm not sure if fish oils are helping me stay healthy or if I'm just convincing myself they are. I think the body of research is inconclusive. Interesting to see the supplements people swear by. I probably should be looking at supplements targeted at healthy ageing at this stage of my life.

The Zoe and Liz Earle podcasts give a lot of information about supplements, Liz Earle esp concentrates on later life info.

I must say I take what she says with a bit of a pinch of salt. She’s a bit too keen on some things. She’s not a doctor or scientist and sometimes is shows. It’s still informative though.

I was persuaded to try wild nutrition supplements. Im now a fan and will always take Omga 3 supplements.

I'm sceptical but also lazy, so I love to take supplements as an easy way to benefit my health without making too much effort! 😈

However I do work in a medical field. I understand it to be very much the case (with medicines and food, not just supplements) that healthy levels of consumption are fully based upon averages. On the effects upon most people. They're not a rule. However everybody's body works differently, everyone processes everything differerently.

In my case, I'm not low in any official decree of healthy magnesium levels. However I have to take it every night because if I don't I get the twitchy eye mentioned by an earlier poster and restless legs syndrome. Two of my patients measure healthily for vitamin B12 - the lower end of healthy but still well within what the government deems to be healthy. This means doctors cannot prescribe injections or supplementation. Unfortunately if these two women do NOT get supplementary B12 injections they are both quite unwell. Their doctors have unofficially requested them both to get the B12 jabs, they just have to pay for them privately.

'Snap ! I did recently switch to an omega 3 higher in DHA tho in the last 2 years'

Can I ask what brand you're taking now?

Cannedlaughter · 19/09/2025 12:44

I take individual tablets as the multivitamin tabs don’t have enough amount in them.
magnesium, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, cod liver oil and calcium.

It depends on the cause of the nerve pain but thiamine, b vitamins, folic acid I think are good for it. But you could be deficient in something else like iron or magnesium. You should get a blood test from the GP as that can show what your too low in. Wishing you well x

Multivitamin, turmeric, berberine, vit D, NAD, Lions Mane. I’m considering swapping out the Lions Mane for Ashwaghanda.

I take the brain feed one ( brand of that article) as I needed an algae-based due to being veggie and it felt more natural. I'm sure you could find a fish oil-based one if you can put up with the fishy burps!

High DHA Supplement | 550mg 1-a-day | Omega 3 Plant-based

DHA benefits brain function & development. Plant-based omega 3 DHA 550mg capsules. 1-a-day. Omega3 brain support. Algae oil DHA supplement.
