What’s the difference? Are the working class less than?

What’s the difference between the people at the last night of the proms and the people at the march today? Middle class vs working class? I am genuinely mystified. Tommy Robinson apart, he’s not the people’s person he thinks he is.

25 injured police officers?

From the BBC 😂

Oh come on. You know the difference and it’s got nothing to do with class.

parietal · 13/09/2025 22:43

proms is celebrating the positive bits of British culture. The march was about hatred and kicking down on the vulnerable. That is, the worst bits.

Tarryawhile · 13/09/2025 22:39

From the BBC 😂

You don’t think police officers were injured?

DancingwiththeEuropeans · 13/09/2025 22:53

The violence in one and not the other?
The many EU flags at one and not the other?
The coming together to celebrate art and diversity in one and not the other? Many of the audience, composers and performers will not be British.

lkjhgfdsa · 13/09/2025 22:55

They weren't waving banners saying "remigration now"

Tarryawhile · 13/09/2025 22:39

From the BBC 😂

There's plenty of video footage of the violence.

tierralee · 13/09/2025 22:59

I’m working class and I wouldn’t touch that march with a bargepole.

Divebar2021 · 13/09/2025 23:18

I don’t actually understand the question - what do you mean by “ are the working class less than”?

leahglass · 13/09/2025 23:36

What do you mean? I'm working class and not a racist thug and like classical music.

Permittedperson · 13/09/2025 23:39

Working class. Love last night of the proms and wouldn’t have touched Tommy Robinson and his match with a barge pole.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 13/09/2025 23:42

The proms is a celebration of music, art and beauty carried out in a traditional manner by a diverse assortment of musicians.

The marches are a bunch of racist thugs inciting violence and spouting hateful fascist rhetoric.

Hope that helps.

Permittedperson · 13/09/2025 23:45

*march (can’t edit my post)

I'd be very tempted to touch the march with a bargepole quite forcefully

But I wouldn't as violence isn't the answer

Nor do I - did you press post before you typed the last word of your title OP? 'Less than' what, or whom?

And I was at the counter protest today and can confirm that the drunk meatheads wrapped in their cheap Chinese-manufactured polyester flags from Amazon were indeed abusive, racist and violent to the point that other participants were penned in by the police and prevented from leaving for their own safety. The tube ride home was appalling.

I've never been to the proms (possibly because I'm working class Hmm), but I'm pretty sure that hasn't happened yet.

Whateverwillwedonow · 13/09/2025 23:54

I’m not into the proms and I’m not into racist dickheads either. Being a dickhead isn’t down to class.

Utter wankers at both events.

EU flag hat wankers
EDL wankers

Peacepleaselouise · 14/09/2025 09:15

The proms is about being for something and about celebration.
The march was about being against something (or people) which makes lots of people feel afraid.

If Tommy Robinson said let’s all fly flags, have a cuppa tea and a custard cream on a Saturday to celebrate being British, you wouldnt be having people injured or frightened.

I’m very much in favour of people being able to protest. So I don’t think it should not be allowed but I question whether the things they are against are anything to do with British values. To me, it’s actually the opposite because we are as a nation a curious and tolerant bunch. Xenophobia is not part of our national identity.

Allbacktoschool · 14/09/2025 09:16

I grew up in a very working class background, my parents are still in social housing, I suppose I would now be viewed as middle class (but that's defintely a subject for many other numerous MN threads). I live in South London so ended up getting the train with a lot of the people going to the march yesterday. TBH I would say lots of them didn't look like your average people I've ever been on a march with. Lots of them were older, all white (without exception), all drinking (it was early 11ish) but I didn't find anything too threatening about them (worth pointing out that I am white so if I was a person of colour I may have found it all quite indimidating), Overheard lots of talk about it being a family day out and how the media were misrepresenting it.

On the way home, I got the train back from Charing Cross and felt very different, lots of white men, wrapped in flags, many of them obviously very drunk and chants of 'Kier Starmer is a c..t , even thought there were lots of children about and it did feel intimidating, I was there with my teenage son and he's pretty streetwise but he commented on it feeling 'a bit scary'. I am sure if you were a person from a minority it would have felt much more so.

I do think if you attend these marches even if you don't consider yourself a racist 'and just want your country back' then just judge yourself by the company you're keeping on them. I am sure some of these people were families and viewed it as a nice day out but many of the people attending wouldn't have been there for that reason, including the organisers.

DramaQueenlady · 14/09/2025 09:21

I wouldnt go on a March nor am I racist, accept, some asylum seekers are genuine and we should do more for refugees.

Im a bit lacking in information and understanding. Refugees are different from illegally entering a country then either disappearing or seeking asylum. These people have not been vetted god knows who they are what they've done previously. A man was arrested in Scotland yesterday for standing in his hotel room window naked doing sexual acts on himself! Its like wtf!

Tarryawhile · 14/09/2025 09:53

I guess you’ve answered my question. I was just confused as to why one group is celebrated by the BBC and the other group branded far right.

The less than was that it’s OK to wave your Union flag at a middle class event but the people who marched in London were all racists and thugs. Is it down to a class perception.

I don’t know any of these people. I don’t know anyone who attended either. I didn’t go to the march and don’t watch it on TV. I didn’t go to the proms but I did watch it on TV and enjoyed it.

From the BBC 😂

The BBC were reporting the figure given to them by the Met Police. So not sure why you think that's funny...
