What’s the difference? Are the working class less than?

What’s the difference between the people at the last night of the proms and the people at the march today? Middle class vs working class? I am genuinely mystified. Tommy Robinson apart, he’s not the people’s person he thinks he is.

I guess you’ve answered my question. I was just confused as to why one group is celebrated by the BBC and the other group branded far right.

The less than was that it’s OK to wave your Union flag at a middle class event but the people who marched in London were all racists and thugs. Is it down to a class perception.

I don’t know any of these people. I don’t know anyone who attended either. I didn’t go to the march and don’t watch it on TV. I didn’t go to the proms but I did watch it on TV and enjoyed it.

One of the events was organised by the far right criminal Yaxley-Lennon (also known as Tommy Robinson) demanding that a legitimate government be overthrown

The other was a celebration of British culture that has been going for decades.

It's absolutely nothing to do with class.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/09/2025 10:50

Also London was not fun yesterday for many genuonely working class people just trying to do their jobs. Mr Monkey works in retail in central London and it was really shit and intimidating yesterday.

You're all over the place OP.

Right.

Tarryawhile · 14/09/2025 10:09

There's really no need for that here.

Ha!

Plus train tickets plus hotel fees. It’s hundreds of pounds if you’re in a deprived northern town to get to London and stay overnight. I haven’t been able to afford to stay in London for years. I can do a day trip though.

There is a BBC Proms in the North East - Sunderland and Gateshead. Lots of free concerts too so everyone can enjoy the world class music.

GCAcademic · 14/09/2025 10:15

So now you understand the difference between the Last Night of the Proms and a violent protest?

@GCAcademic I always see your name in connection with decent rational debate here - hello!

So I'm going to say here, as I've also said on another thread, with met police estimating 110,000 people, there were 25 arrests and 26 police officers were injured.

IMHO that's 26 too many. But In the context of a protest with that number of people, it's a lot less than what I was expecting. I also suspect the number attending is higher than what the Met police estimated.

Thinking of it in percentage terms, I would not call that a "violent" protest. I think that mischaracterises it.

@Tarryawhile Is it that 110,000 people were out waving the flag and also listening to "diverse" music? I put diverse in inverted because I dislikethat word, as a woman of colour I've completely lost what the DEI lot are trying to do. Admittedly, I didn't have much sympathy with it 20 years ago either, but I digress.

But yeah, if you're trying to say that they also had a lovely concert, certainly the clips I saw look like fantastic singing, and they were waving flags, and they're being labelled differently, I kind of see your point. But Tommy Robinson will always be associated with rampant racism and an extensive criminal record. So it's understandable that there's a lot of alarm around it.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/09/2025 10:47

@Tarryawhile umm you may have noticed the march was also in London. So these poor lambs could afford to travel to London to bellow about immigration and to beat up a few policeman but not attend a concert.

As people have said the Proms were founded to widen acces to classical muaic so more peope could afford to see it.

@Tarryawhile

This!!!

Yes, I am, I’m trying to understand. Is that wrong?

You don't trust the BBC, the most trustworthy news source in this country.

Of course you're all over the place. You can hardly formulate theories when your feet aren't rooted in facts.

GoldenLeaves75 · 14/09/2025 20:03

I’m working class, well-educated, and I would like to see Mr Yaxley-Lennon back behind bars for inciting violence.

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 14/09/2025 20:05

FWIW The Last Night of the Proms has been roundly trounced in the past for being jingoistic and racist by some voices on the Left.

The BBC are not the most trustworthy news source in the country....thats got to be a joke, surely.

Tarryawhile · 13/09/2025 22:39

From the BBC 😂

Which channel did you watch The Proms on, OP?

TaborlinTheGreat · 14/09/2025 21:04

So you decided that the BBC was lying aboit the injured police officers, because it suited your narrative to disbelieve it, but now people have pointed out that it's not just the BBC, you're suddenly shocked? Ok.

I guess you’ve answered my question. I was just confused as to why one group is celebrated by the BBC and the other group branded far right.

I don't believe you are actually confused. The reason the two cases are different is because of the intention behind them. One group is waving some flags along to some music, because it's a tradition to do that at that event. I've been. It's nice, cheerful and friendly. The other group are following a violent far-right thug with a list of convictions as long as your arm, and sone if them injured police officers. I mean... come on. It's not hard.
