i'm a non smoker. make that a never smoker, apart form one incident when i was 13 and had a huge coughing fit.
i am really really shocked at how people are reacting towards people smoking. it is not the worst thing in the world, and i just feel really uncomfortable athow they are making smokers out to be pariahs.

There's an awful lot of hysteria about smoking now - and all the anti-smoking propaganda* is giving people an excuse to feel superior.

*Smoking is REALLY bad for you, but it is propaganda as in very, very shrill.

Hmm.. I would love to comment on this thread but I am not happy about the title.

stitch · 01/06/2008 22:55

I've noticed a new trend too - people who I hardly know say 'oh! I didn't know you smoked!' if they find out i do. I just think , well, why would you? you don't know me that well and I only smoke the odd fag but it's as if they are saying 'oh, I didn't know you were that kind of person!'

expatinscotland · 01/06/2008 22:58

No, coke is just responsible for tens of thousands of deaths in Latin America alone, child slavery, countless murders, untold misery and incredible and permanent environmental dessmiation.

Why should people who use cocaine be vilified? Why should people who choose to do anything that only affects them personally, be vilified?

It annoys me. People should live and let live, and as long as someone is not committing an act that is harming anyone else, then who am I, or you, or anyone to tell them not to?

Maybe I think people should not drive cars, as thety can and do kill, daily. They also pollute the atmosphere to a huge degree, not to mention fuel, and the wars that have been fought in relation..

But who am I to suggest people don't use cars?

ash6605 · 01/06/2008 22:59

I agree PRUNERS-for similar reasons.

Actually, everyone I know who uses cocaine would do so discreetly & in a child-free environment, so it's probably less to be vilified.

No problem with smokers at all. Just do it at an appropriate time & place, that's all I'd ask.

UniversallyChallenged · 01/06/2008 22:59

I think it depends on how it impacts on your life.

I couldnt care less if people smoke or not - unless they light up right by me and i am then forced to smell it and my clothes stink of it.I wouldnt even pass wind next to someone and expect them to be content with breathing it in, and that's not going to kill them. Or in the case of our sports day - the mum in mid crowd lights up by ds and smirks when i tut and mutter how selfish she is. Or my dh gets throat cancer even though he has never ever smoked and the possible cause is passive smoking due to his old career.

then I wish they were pariahs and outcasts due to their selfish attitude.

harpomarx · 01/06/2008 22:59

pruners

I'd rather live with a smoker than a cocaine addict like I used to - it might not kill the people around the user but it does wreck their lives.

stitch · 01/06/2008 23:00

exactly expat. smoking shouldnt be classified as being in the same category.
pruners, i am sorry about your father. please dont misunderstand me. i dont think smoking is a good thing.i know it is a very dangerous thing, to the smoker, and thepeople around them. i just believe it should be put in perspective.

anyone who uses cocaine plays a role in the atrocities past and present in Latin America which demand for it fuels.

Anyone who buys petrol, diesel, oil etc are contributing to oil wars.

Stupid, pointless argument.

TheWoman · 01/06/2008 23:02

I am happy to vilify anyone who smokes near my children.
