How common is it for students to use AI to complete their assignments?

Either at school, college and university.

I’m asking as a friend of mine is having her university assignment investigated for potential AI use. Friend swears that she didn’t use AI to complete this work.

Is it commonplace now?

I did my first degree in the early 1990s pre internet and then went back to university to do an MSc in 2020 and my mind was blown by google scholar. It opened up a wide range of resources and I had to develop a whole range of critical evaluation skills as there was so much more information and evidence to analyse. That and citation / reference tools such as Mendeley completely changed the way I worked - definitely for the better. I see AI tools (co-pilot, chat GPT) going the same way. I think their use will evolve and there will be a way to control their use to. I'd like to thank a previous poster as well - my DC has severe dyslexia and langue processing issues and being able to use AI for college assessments (and declare it) would be life changing for them.

Oooh, how do you do this? My current experiments with Google and ChatGPT (I'm no longer an OU student but trying to keep up with 'modern tech') leave me asking 'where's the (Harvard) referencing for any of this?'.

More importantly, how do the uni students use it to write Humanities-type essays including the all-important references? Or is there a form of query I should be using?

Much like Mounjaro, everyone is completely open with each other about how they are suddenly losing weight without trying....😂
