. Buying cheap baking trays and tins
. Buying economy washing up liquid. You need half a bottle to produce suds

The only cheap thing I’ve ever bought that’s lasted years is a £3 silicon phone case from Amazon for my iPhone, which looks and feels as sturdy as it did when I bought it four years ago.

@user1497787065 I was being generous saying scuffed, DS1s shoes always end up with small holes in the toes or the top detaching from the bottom somehow. It's a mystery how he does it as DS2s shoes always last until he's outgrown them, even when they are from the same shop.

CalzoneOnLegs · 12/09/2025 12:59

I’m going to mention iPhone/ipad charging cables, despite the genuine Apple ones costing £20 (for 1 metre length) they are not of robust construction and don’t last any longer than the £5.00 ones, though they don’t charge as quickly admittedly. I keep mine back for when I need a fast charge but it’s not used regularly

Bleachedlevis · 12/09/2025 13:02

The biggest one for me is cheap baking trays and roasting tins. Awful. First time you use them, they reach a certain temperature then you hear a loud CLANG and the tray buckles.

Foundation. Shampoo (the Alberto balsam ones are passable but most supermarket budget brands are so bad)
Bread... most budget bread is completely inedible.
Socks. Yes they were a few quid in primark but they won't last one wear.

Most things from SHEIN altho you get the odd thing that is randomly really high quality. I've got a dress from SHEIN that's listed me years and I love it.

I don't get this about loo roll though.. I buy the cheapest available and I think it's fine tbh.

The cheapest always have less on each roll, and are thinner, and are generally also smaller squares.

You add all this up, you find can use two squares on some better brands, and would need 4+ to be the equivalent on the cheapest of the cheap - and there's less on the roll you are then using twice the amount of as well.

I think like everything, research and experiment. You don't have to go for the most expensive, but for toilet roll the very cheapest is almost always extremely bad value compared to at least a step or two above in price.

The trick is to not chop and change. If you do, you'll find that your household will use roughly the same number of squares, then you get a blocked loo.

These days with great budget ranges from the likes of Aldi and Lidl, cheap doesn’t have to mean crap. Lidl quilted loo roll is marvellous!

Cheap bin bags.

I hate cheap bin bags. Most of the 'decent' bin bags are like tissue paper now. I've started using the green garden bags from the co op now. Where can I buy decent bin bags from?

Yeah, and the ones that used to be ‘normal’ now cost a fortune!

Costco. Superb bin bags.

Agree with the cheap bin bags. They’re rubbish!
Sainsbury’s own brand washing up liquid is REALLY good though. Better than Fairy for suds.
I actually prefer cheap loo roll as I have a macerator toilet and am always paranoid about it clogging up 😭

Agree about Dyson. Ridiculous prices. I think James Dyson is taking the p*ss

Edited

I've found Shark to be an excellent alternative to Dyson and the machines last longer too, as well as being cheaper 😀

Yes, I’ve heard this. But 2 years ago I bought a Henry vacuum cleaner in a sale for £99 - it’s been brilliant! 😀

Henry is the best! I’m on my second but have to say the newer ones are not as powerful and sturdy as the older models. Was an EU directive I think to reduce wattage.

There's not enough profit in quality products for the masses.

unn · 12/09/2025 18:10

My parents’ Henry is about 28 years old. Only use it for cars, garage and shed.

This. The way we shop has changed. People buy more clothes, more often and don't want to pay much.
