. Buying cheap baking trays and tins
. Buying economy washing up liquid. You need half a bottle to produce suds

Washing up liquid
Bin bags
Toilet roll

Furniture
Saucepans, frying pans etc
Bedding
Footwear

Clothes / shoes, beds / mattresses. If you're not in one you're in the other. Prioritise the things you need to be comfortable.

SimoneA · 11/09/2025 18:42

Anything between you and the ground.

Tyres
Shoes
Mattress

Treesarenotforeating · 11/09/2025 18:42

Rubber gloves

MyUmberOrca · 11/09/2025 18:45

Waterproof clothing. If you want to stay dry in a downpour but something decent. Goretex is worth the money!

But my posh Ercol sofa was a sale return and cost £500 with a Iifetime warranty... I'm 12 years in and thinking I might get some new cushions soon...maybe recover it when I retire.

You still won't have reached the same value until you have had it for around 22 years.

And for 2 seaters they can go for 3.5k or more easily. I can't find any information on a lifetime warranty so dont know how it works, and their outlet says you don't get warranty from any returned items they sell at all.

There will always be exceptions both ways, I just think people should remember cheaper isn't always more even though if have to replace more. It often can be though. Just research.

Very good polint about the quality of clothes these days. Even the so called higher end clothes are shabbily made. For those old enough to remember the M&S St Michael label, the stuff they sell today is nowhere near as good quality as that was.

St Michael clothes were the best quality. My teenage daughter's favourite night dress, which which she wears all the time, is one I wore when I was a teen. My mum got it from a charity shop in the mid 90's. It's St Michael and it's still in almost perfect condition. I don't think they'll ever again make clothes that last so long.

NormaNormal · 11/09/2025 18:53

I disagree regarding the cat food. If you have a fussy cat, it won't eat it anyway.

Buxusmortus · 11/09/2025 18:55

Flooring.
I have 30 year old Pergo laminate in my hall, looks as good as new, it came with a lifetime guarantee. It was more expensive than bog standard stuff but paid for itself many times over.

My mother has a carpet that came from her father's house when he died 45 years ago, and he'd had it a good few years. Still in excellent condition, it was very expensive at the time but excellent quality. On the other hand, before my son moved house recently he had owned another house for 6 years which they had carpeted cheaply when they moved in. Those carpets weren't looking great after only a few years.

CalzoneOnLegs · 11/09/2025 18:58

I have to buy cheapo toilet roll (the nikki one from home bargains as a PP said) because the three ply embossed one blocks my toilet (honestly it IS the paper) 💩

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 11/09/2025 18:59

Toilet roll and kitchen roll.. it’s a false economy anyway because you use twice as much.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 10/09/2025 19:03

Where are you ?

I haven't seen real bacon with rind for years - and the fat is full of flavour.

We buy our bacon, with rind, from a producer who sources pork from a pig farm (in Dunmow, Essex, home of the Flitch of Bacon) and it is thick cut and gorgeous.
Spare me the skinny, watery, rindless bacon.
if you don't want to eat the rind you can just cut it off, after cooking. But it makes a big difference to how it cooks and its overall quality.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 11/09/2025 19:25

But for many people cheap is the only option. Its all well and good saying if you spend more it saves in the long run but you have to have the initial outlay and very many people don't. If you need a new sofa and can only afford a £500 one then it's not much use thinking that if I spend £750 it will last longer if you haven't got £750 to spend. Same with food items you may need to buy cheaper or go without something else. Do you buy supermarket own brand coffee and a loaf or buy Nescafe and forego bread

Expensive doesn’t mean quality these days though.
I still have a perfectly shaped BHS T-shirt, it’s been gone nearly a decade, but the T-shirt was several years old then already.
I don’t see the same quality as that T anywhere these days, even if they are expensive.

I bought a couple last year, from studio24, amazing quality and not expensive.

Wildefish · 11/09/2025 20:00

Agree. Just had to bin my Laura Ashley duvet cover after 16 years. Was still lovely to sleep under but a tiny tear had started and my foot kept making it bigger.

Lilimoon · 11/09/2025 17:13

Nasty. You are talking about people.

It's a joke, just like this thread is.

LayeredlikeanOnion · 11/09/2025 20:03

A mattress. Cheap is nasty and uncomfortable

XenoBitch · 11/09/2025 20:08

Kitchen roll. I only use Regina Blitz. This is non-negotiable.

Sadworld23 · 11/09/2025 20:09

Still working my way through the thread.

Cheap Tea bags, awful 😖 Yorkshire T 4me
Cheap coffee uck.

Paint - recommend Fortress, good value and brilliant not yellowing coverage. Even covers nicotine stains. Not tried colours, only white.

Washing up liquid. Love the antibacterial from Aldi, I dilute it a bit to make even cheaper.

Shoes, its not about price, it's fit. Have some incredibly cheap shoes that are comfy, and vice versa.

Loo roll, cushelle fan but priced out a bit as on low budget, tried a few but Aldi coconut oil seems best.

Chocolate just isn't cheap any more.

MidnightTwin · 11/09/2025 20:13

Tin openers. I got through loads of cheap ones. Brought an expensive on that I've had for 12 years now.

NormaNormal · 11/09/2025 20:29

@MidnightTwin , I buy cheap tin openers. I have had 2 expensive ones and neither lasted.
Could you share the details of the one you bought please?

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 11/09/2025 20:38

Copycat versions of Laughing Cow cheese triangles.
Both German supermarkets guilty as charged. 🐮
