. Buying cheap baking trays and tins
. Buying economy washing up liquid. You need half a bottle to produce suds

Ryanair

I wouldn't count them as false economy. They do get you from A to B so final result is the same as expensive airline (many of which scrapped lots pf the good bits anyway)

I hate cheap bin bags. Most of the 'decent' bin bags are like tissue paper now. I've started using the green garden bags from the co op now. Where can I buy decent bin bags from?

I buy the Costco Kirkland brand 124l bags with the drawstring . They are £ but there's 90 in the box so they last ages .
We have bags not wheelie bins and the local foxes can spot a weakness in a bag !
If I need to buy another brand they're a disappointment .

Tents and waterproofs

anything which might leak

Oh yes - Mountain warehouse coats which claim to be waterproof and breathable - they are neither so you end up soaking wet and sweaty. I saw sense and got a Regatta one on sale.

Just about, yes.

But by the time you've factored in the hidden costs you're normally paying roughly the same as you would have via BA or equivalent. Add on the the delays, the appalling customer service and the general contempt for the customer I would happily pay a premium.

I'm biased though. My daughter (who has asthma) was treated so appallingly on a Ryanair flight a few years ago when she was having an asthma attack (to the point where the cabin staff were openly berated by paramedics who were called to treat her when we landed) I have vowed never to fly with them again. O'Leary is scum and I resent putting money in his pocked.

Like I say, I'm biased.

I have to admit I never pay extras tbh. And even with suitcase added, it's still cheaper.

I get your opinion on them though!

Tools. Any sort - screwdrivers, scissors, chainsaws...

Some of my oldest small tools were bought in Aldi, 40+ years ago when we lived in Germany, before Lidl even existed I think!

Aldi fruit & veg….rancid before you get home.

And their strawberries, tasteless and don't last more than a few days.

I cannot believe that’s Arnie in the Lidl tools advert, same as Robert de Niro with the crumpets that time !

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow you've got the job, first official Stitch Quality Inspector!!!

Years ago I had a posh friend whose parents owned a business that made shirts for among other stores, M and S, that ages me terribly, but they used to have M and S inspectors who came round periodically and one thing they were very strict about was stitch number, tension and thread, so not new jobs at all!

XenoBitch · 11/09/2025 20:08

Kitchen roll. I only use Regina Blitz. This is non-negotiable.

Same here, used some to get the smears off the windows I'd just cleaned yesterday, use it for all kinds of jobs.

It might be a matter of taste as much as price and quality but I much prefer thick-cut marmalade (especially orange) and if that means shelling out for a jar of Frank Cooper's Oxford marmalade then that's what I'll do. I also prefer Colman's mustard. It zings at the back of the throat in a way other brands and the shop's own brand just don't.

I bought Green and Blacks hot chocolate yesterday, it seemed to disappear last year from the shelves, can't wait to use up the Costa stuff.

ShowMeTheSushi · 13/09/2025 11:07

Parcel tape — doesn’t stick to the parcel, but somehow sticks to itself, the scissors, and my hair.

Oh wow, just goes to show that all the jobs that have disappeared (like this one!) really haven't benefited us.
Like I said previously, I work in the footwear industry and we have a person in QA, we get one sample that is meant to be representative of thousands of pairs. Of course the factory makes an amazing first sample....they want us to buy their stuff! We used to take 'production samples' randomly out of the stock they made but apparently that isn't cost effective anymore.

Bleach that isn’t Domestos

CalzoneOnLegs · 13/09/2025 17:24

Bleach is bleach (all awful stuff)

NormaNormal · 13/09/2025 17:40

@CalzoneOnLegs , it has its uses. I'm quite a fan but a bottle lasts me a long time.
I try to use natural products for cleaning.

CalzoneOnLegs · 13/09/2025 20:00

@NormaNormal yes, even the supermarket brand makes my eyes sting I use it very rarely, it’s corrosive on porcelain, I sometimes squirt some in the sink plug, I tend to use the spray cleaner with bleach, it’s much milder and it gets stains out. That thick stuff is like some kind of toxic chemical weapon

NormaNormal · 14/09/2025 14:00

@CalzoneOnLegs , I don't use anything 'with bleach'. Sprays spread droplets in the air.
I use thick bleach occasionally on the loo, and once in a blue moon on plugholes.

I like Cadbury coz i grew up with it. But I wouldnt really class it as chocolate.

But once upon a time Cadbury chocolate was creamy deliciousness that slid across your tongue with the cream it contained.
Now with palm oil, it's slimy, yet gritty given the sugar doesn't appear to dissolve as well in palm oil.
Unspeakably awful, american shite.

AhBiscuits · 14/09/2025 19:21

Builders. Stupidly went with the builder who gave us a much cheaper quote than the others it was a big mistake.
