do you toast your tortillas when you make fajitas?

Boring question alert 🚨

Just a silly debate we had over lunch at work. One person toasts them in a tiny bit of butter and can’t believe people don’t do the same. Inedible without this step.

😂

Heat them a bit definitely. Toasting heads into enchilada territory.

Pippa12 · 10/09/2025 16:04

No we just heat them in the microwave.

Luxio · 10/09/2025 16:04

Heat them yes but no I wouldn't toast them. A short blast in the microwave is all that's necessary.

Ineedanewsofa · 10/09/2025 16:05

No, they’d go crispy and then how do you fold them without them snapping?!

Daisydoesnt · 10/09/2025 16:05

No not toasted? Put them on a baking tray, cover with foil, and bake them in a hot oven for about 4 minutes.

how do you “toast” something in butter? Do they mean pan fry? Doesnt that make them greasy for rolling?

Toasted is for enchiladas or quesadillas. Heat gently so they are warm and still soft.

That's not a fajita that's an enchilada...

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 10/09/2025 16:09

And that's frying not toasting

Chipsahoy · 10/09/2025 16:10

Tonight we have baked saucy fajitas topped with cheese. No tortilla wraps at all.

Lokde · 10/09/2025 16:11

Enchiladas are sloppy bake things, no?

We just nuke them in the microwave. What your colleague is making is not fajitas... (look nice though)

Does your colleague understand the difference between pan frying and toasting?

Jitterbuggs · 10/09/2025 16:13

Enchiladas are baked with sauce and cheese.

Tortillas should be warmed before eating. But what your colleague is doing is closer to a burrito, but you don't tend to toast/pan fry them like a panini/grilled cheese.

Ok maybe not enchiladas maybe a taquito is a better likeness. Fajitas aren't normally preassembled or put into a frying pan the picture you showed in the pan is definitely not a fajita.

That’s not a fajita in your photo.

HoneyHoneyHowYouThrillMe · 10/09/2025 16:31

I guess she's making something akin to a quesadilla.

I fry it when I want it that way...

If I'm making fajitas I heat them in the microwave or gently warm them, dry, on my cast iron pan. They need to be soft and pliable.

Other times I'll fill and bake in the oven, with or without sauce.

HoneyHoneyHowYouThrillMe · 10/09/2025 16:32

Fancy tacos now! 😁

Me too 😂.

YankTank · 10/09/2025 16:40

It’s not a fajita, burrito, enchilada, fajita, or taco. It has the same pan cooking technique as a quesadilla or a Crunchwrap, so it’s likely closest to these two.

tinofthetop · 10/09/2025 16:42

We have a tortilla warmer pouch thing you put in the microwave but then you leave them in their cloth pouch and take one out when you need one. Stay hot and supple.

You should definitely heat them to warm the fats in the dough so that it is pliable.

What your friend is making is not fajitas. It might be semantics to her but deep fried would be a chimichanga, not sure what hers classes as. I think closer to a quesadilla as that is fried. Man, I think this thread might have ruined my dinner choice. Now I want fajitas.

HoneyHoneyHowYouThrillMe · 10/09/2025 16:44

I'd quite like a great big platter piled high with each of these options!! 🤤🤤

Panda89 · 10/09/2025 16:44

It’s not a fajita, more like a chimichanga. Looks nice though!

BadActingParsley · 10/09/2025 16:47

Just to say - I love a quesedilla. Even though that isn't a quesidilla either.

@tinofthetop I'm off to look for one of those.
