AIBU to assume that the majority of posters read The Daily Mail or The Telegraph??

I relatively new around here but judging from several threads about flags, trans and autistic, people, there seems to be a lot of posters who love seeing the St Georges Cross up everywhere, are anti-trans and wouldn't give much credence to the struggles that autistic people face. Seems to me they must believe everything they read in The Mail or The Telegraph. Or am I being unreasonable?!

I read the Guardian and the Daily Mail every day - I've found that the truth is usually at a halfway point between the two.

I like this

Octavia64 · 10/09/2025 10:52

Mumsnet has about 8 million users.

Readership of the daily telegraph is estimated to be 734,000

so on that basis alone, no

RedRiverShore5 · 10/09/2025 10:54

I read most of the papers on PressReader because it's free, unfortunately The Times is not on there but most of the others are

NettleandBramble · 10/09/2025 11:08

Yes, everyone on here believes the same things.

I read no papers and all of them. Depending on what is shared that piques my interest that is not behind a pay wall, but I no longer decide whether to read something or not on the basis of which paper it is.

amicisimma · 10/09/2025 11:18

I would imagine that the majority of people who read any paper would read The Guardian or (or, for the more open-minded, and) the Daily Mail for the simple reason that they are fairly easy to access online. The Telegraph and The Times tend to use firewalls and are quite expensive to buy, so I would think fewer people bother.

I'm lucky to have access to free newspapers somewhere I go, so I tend to read The Times for the more public sector viewpoint and The Telegraph for the more wealth-creating sector viewpoint. I can't really be bothered with the tabloid 'the "other lot" are cheating us' style of The Guardian and The Mail, which I find to be more-or-less the same paper, with The Guardian being more left leaning and The Mail being more right. But they both sometimes carry good articles, so I run an eye over them.

I would think that the people who read any paper are outnumbered by those who get their news elsewhere.

Wrong, Guardian.

DiscoBob · 10/09/2025 11:22

I read Mail online for a joke sometimes, as well as the Sun for the same reasons. Not for credible news. Not read the Telegraph.

I would never buy or pay a pay wall for them though. I might occasionally buy a copy of the Guardian. But very rarely.

Newsnow · 10/09/2025 11:24

I read the Times, the Guardian and Private Eye.

HerewardtheSleepy · 10/09/2025 11:25

I seem to find a lot of fellow Guardian readers here.

Fatcatsinspats · 10/09/2025 11:29

I read the Times and Telegraph every day. I dislike the flag people, support the autistic but dislike the trans lobby (not trans people as such) because they have damaged my professional life.

You can’t lump everyone together. I was previously a left wing activist and full time party worker. Now it’s likely I will never vote for a left wing party again because of their attitude to women and children and while I would never vote Tory, I agree with some of their ‘right wing’ views especially in relation to women and children.

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 10/09/2025 11:29

Immigration and trans ideology are two separate issues.

It is entirely possible to have a range of views rather than joining the supposed left wing or right wing “club”.

Also, with ALL the media outlets themselves becoming ever more polarised and propaganda driven sensible people read from a range of sources to try and establish facts and make up their own mind.

I read across this range including The Guardian, The Times and The Telegraph.

Underthinker · 10/09/2025 11:30

I read the Guardian for decades, now more the Times & BBC. I have never read the Mail or Telegraph. But you can't always predict someone's opinions from the papers they read.

PennySweeet · 10/09/2025 11:43

So which of those do you read OP?

2dogsandabudgie · 10/09/2025 11:47

Even the people on here who claim to hate the Daily Mail read it as they will start a thread about an article and link to the paper, and at the same time apologise for it being the DM. Always makes me laugh.

Allbacktoschool · 10/09/2025 11:49

Not sure, but MN feels like it's a lot more right leaning than it used to be.

RedRiverShore5 · 10/09/2025 11:59

On any of the scandal threads people always read the Daily Mail, as it often has hints nearby as to who it is.

JHound · 10/09/2025 12:09

I don’t touch the Torygraph and rarely read The Mail (never buy it - only if I forwarded a story.)

I have no issue with conservative / right learning news sites but I do have issues with platforms that misrepresent data / omit key information or to deliberately whip up hatred against various groups which both of these do incessantly. That said I am not a regular reader of any papers. When I was at uni years ago I bought The TImes.

WallaceinAnderland · 10/09/2025 12:10

The best thing about MN is the broad spectrum of beliefs and opinions and the freedom to express them. People who stick to echo chambers hardly ever learn anything new. The curious are open minded.

HelpMeGetThrough · 10/09/2025 12:14

I’ll have you know I get my quality information by listening to GB News.

I haven’t done any reading lessons yet.

BellyPork · 10/09/2025 12:21

AIBU to assume the Op is an insufferable snob?

Gloriia · 10/09/2025 12:27

It's like most places online, there is a massive mix of views and opinions.

I haven't seen any 'anti trans' posts? We all support anyone being able to dress as they wish. The point is you can't change sex. That is not anti trans, it is fact.

ShiftingSand · 10/09/2025 12:37

Greysowhat · 10/09/2025 10:31

oh the irony!

This😂 you will find a lot of responses like that on here. The other one is “it’s none of your business” because Mn is not about discussing anything is it?😂

BlueandPinkSwan · 10/09/2025 12:44

Everyone is entitled to their opinion whether it offends the majority of MNer or not such as choice of reading matter.
I have always found it odd that so many posters have added links to the Daily Mail then apologise for doing so.
I don't believe that they all get this stuff from pop ups etc. A lot are obviously reading articles so they can post about it.
If you don't like it scroll past or don't link.

I don't know. I only read the Guardian and the BBC news. Obviously, I can only talk for myself. It seems there are pretty balanced views on these forums actually.

ArmyOfNorks · 10/09/2025 12:52

I don’t read either. I do follow Simple Politics.
