Would you approve of an “rainbow” coalition of progressive parties?

Based on current polling, the most likely outcome of a general election would be Reform largest party, but no majority. In those circumstances, would you approve of Labour / Green / Lib Dem / possibly SNP coalition if they had enough seats to reach a majority?

OP posts:

The short answer is no, and I say that as someone who has never voted for the right in my life (voted Labour last GE). I am so SO tired of contemporary 'Progressivism'. It's depressing to think that the next GE is going to be a choice between Reform and people who think women can have penises. What a time to be alive....

Yes, absolutely.

UsernameMcUsername · 09/09/2025 22:25

Thinking about this more - if it was a straight choice between a Reform minister for education and a Green one, I would actually reluctantly pick Reform. Obviously there would be a lot of negatives, but at least the kid who goes around punching other kids in the face might, just might, be suspended.

And I'm saying this as a diehard Remainer. Mostly I would just like the left not to be shit? But that's clearly too much to ask.

AutumnalLight · 09/09/2025 22:27

Oh ffs they all know what a woman is, they’re just pretending not to!

We need to kick this reform shit into the long grass where it belongs.

I’m all for it OP! 🌈🌈🌈

AutumnalLight · 09/09/2025 22:29

Randomlygeneratedname · 09/09/2025 07:26

I just don't believe there is any way reform will actually be the largest party. I think the most likely outcome will be another labour majority but less than last time.

Hmmm… no sane person thought we’d Brexit though did they?!!

No, they hate women and the white working class.

🙄🙄🙄

ByShyRaven · 09/09/2025 22:49

The amount of posters saying “no way” because they have an issue with trans people 🙄.

I think that has probably skewed the polling OP.

Either way - it won’t happen. Outside of the big liberal cities (London, Bristol, Brighton) the UK seems to be crawling further and further to the right

LemonMeringueCustardCream · 09/09/2025 22:56

Yes, I'd definitely be in favour. Seems like a lot of people on the thread would far rather have a far right government than vote for them though.

London, Bristol and Brighton (and Oxford and Cambridge, also both left leaning) should form their own separate state if Reform get in.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 09/09/2025 23:57

I don't think it would happen but I'd do anything to keep Reform out of power. They would be an absolute disaster for this country, locally and nationally. Look at the Reform councils. Nigel Farage has no integrity of character. He's a drunk Trump wannabe in a sports jacket.

It’s not ‘an issue with trans people’ Hmm

As has been very clearly stated multiple times, it is an issue with women’s rights.

Not quite sure how that has escaped you, as the explanations have been crystal clear.

Wherehasthecatgone · 10/09/2025 00:42

How is it progressive to think women are defined by adherence to oppressive sex stereotypes?

Wherehasthecatgone · 10/09/2025 00:48

What would be nice would be to have intelligent MSPs who thought critically and voted according to what was best for their constituents. Not sheep that sign up to support whatever a select elite propose regardless of how damaging or ineffectual it is. Or who spend hours debating topics that the Scottish Parliament has no power over.

HeyThereDelila · 09/09/2025 20:49

Whereas Reform and the Tories don't?! I cant believe you think the likes of Tice, Farage, and Johnson don't have anything but pure contempt for the white or any working class. They also do not have any respect for women. Please don't be so naive.

They are all public school boys playing a game with the plebs.

Wherehasthecatgone · 10/09/2025 07:49

So what you are suggesting OP is we ignore the party that received the most votes in a democratic election and are led instead by the extremist interests of a bunch of minor parties with only a few MPs each?

What you think of Reform is irrelevant. We live in a democracy (just). Why should their voters be stripped of representation because you dislike them?

I think a Reform government would struggle though, as I don’t think they have a strong agreed identity. They are popular because they are not the other parties. But when in power Farage might well find the MPs don’t vote the way he wants them to.

Sounds like the exact opposite of what the majority of the British public want but you crack on lol

You think the majority of Scots wanted the Greens in the Scottish Government and have to put up with their extremist policies? You do you.

Women are not defined by "sex stereotypes". They are defined by sex.

It's the TRAs who are obsessed with looking "cute" and wearing spinny skirts. They are the ones adhering to "oppressive sex stereotypes".

But the greens, SNP, Lib Dem’s and Labour all voted to define women based on oppressive sex stereotypes.

I think that pp was responding to the op as are the majority of posts. So in agreement with you.

DisappearingGirl · 10/09/2025 10:52

Yes I would favour a centre-left coalition. I think the left / centre-left vote is too split at the moment.

(I agree with others on the sex and gender issue but I don't think that's been handled well by any party, and it's now slowly being sorted out via the Supreme Court ruling and Cass report etc)

At the last election, those parties
combined won more than 50% of the popular vote. That shows a clear preference for some form of “progressive” party (regardless of how you define “progressive”). On that basis, how can you legitimately maintain that it doesn’t sound like what most people want?

So you think Labour should enter into a coalition with them now? Why? To stitch up the vote in return for political favours when they already have a majority? The whole point of a parliamentary democracy is the whole parliament gets to debate and vote on legislation. One member on vote by MPs who first and foremost represent their constituents. Backroom dealing ‘vote winter fuel cuts and we will introduce legislation to remove women’s rights’ is the antithesis of that.

HerewardtheSleepy · 10/09/2025 11:30

Totally pointless question. The parties of the left in the UK could never manage it. As a Lib Dem, for example, I trust the Greens about as far as I could throw a full-grown elephant and the Labour/Lib Dem hatred for each other is notorious.

Not even the threat of Nigel in No 10 could overcome that I'm afraid.
