Do we stop wearing coats in high school?

So my DS has just gone up to secondary school.

I’ve bought and returned three coats so far, non of which fit over his blazer. He’s informed me today NOBODY wears a coat, and the blazer acts as the coat. He can take it off in class but has to wear it in the corridor.

Is this typical? What do they do when it snows? Aibu to think this is mad?
or am I struggling to cut the apron strings 🤪

I’m used to bundling him off to primary mittens and a woolly hat!!

Coats are very uncool round here

There was a brief period where north face coats were in, and a brief period where canada goose was in

Now it's back to no coats!

TheyNicknamedHerTheBolter · 08/09/2025 09:58

But won’t they freeze? Or spend all day wet? Or is this just fine when you’re 11? 🤣

Mine won’t take a coat as they would have to carry it about all day. When it snows they are cold and yes it is mad.

itsabeautifuldayjuly · 08/09/2025 10:01

My son has a light raincoat to fit over his blazer. small enough to easily fit in his backpack.Year 8 now, and has to walk to station, then take a train and a bus.
School has several buildings, so they walk outside between lessons as well.

TotallyAddictedToCoffee · 08/09/2025 10:01

DD has just gone in to Y9 and she won't wear a coat either

It's because they have nowhere to put them, so have to carry them everywhere and when they're already loaded down with bags/lunch/pe kit they just can't be bothered with the faff - IME

DelphiniumBlue · 08/09/2025 10:01

My boys wouldn't wear coats, partly because there was nowhere to put them.
On cold ( I mean freezing, icy cold) days, they would wear gloves, but I couldn't get them to wear a scarf or hat. They would very occasionally agree to wear a packamac- type thing over their blazer, which wasn't warm but was windproof and waterproof and would fold up small in their bag.

Cheese55 · 08/09/2025 10:02

Yes, both of mine were/are no coats due to carrying around

RubySquid · 08/09/2025 10:03

No coats were worn by any of my lot at secondary school either. If they are cold it's their issue. They aren't toddlers

In fact year 3 dgs won't wear a coat either. Not that one in actually necessary at the mo as it's 20 degrees

taybert · 08/09/2025 10:06

Mostly no coat but if it’s torrential rain he’ll put a thin raincoat on and when it was very cold he wore his lightweight “down” jacket (it’s not down but it’s that sort of thing) The key with both being they screw up small enough to put in his bag so he can carry them around easily.

SM33 · 08/09/2025 10:06

No coat! Has a light raincoat that I can force them to wear if there’s a deluge! Even then that’s a struggle.

NoraLuka · 08/09/2025 10:07

I remember my mum complaining about this to other mums in the 90s 😂 Good to see some things never change!

Munchyseeds2 · 08/09/2025 10:08

No coat and if you are a girl, the shortest rolled up skirt you can get away with and short socks
Used to make me feel cold just looking at her!

Typicalwave · 08/09/2025 10:08

My child refuses flatly to wear one

maudelovesharold · 08/09/2025 10:12

They don’t have pegs in secondary school, and mine never used their lockers due to the extra faff of going to and fro on a big site. They used to carry everything they needed for the day around with them all day!

KawasakiBabe · 08/09/2025 10:13

Neither of mine wore coats to secondary. My DS took a waterproof to school on day 1, put it un his locker and I saw it again when he emptied his locker to leave.
Children are waterproof from ages 11-16, didn’t you know?

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 08/09/2025 10:16

No coats because there’s nowhere to put them.

MIAMNER · 08/09/2025 10:17

No coat (due to faff), blazer dragged around on the floor after them, bag held over head in torrential rain.

Itwasachristmasjoke · 08/09/2025 10:18

Having the same thing with my 11 yr old !! It was pouring rain last week but insisted a brolly and the blazer was fine!!

YetanotherNC25 · 08/09/2025 10:48

No coats are worn. Even though they have lockers to put stuff in. So my DD in Y9 walks home and gets soaking wet, which she seems to be ok with, or texts me while I’m in a meeting and WFH with a sob story about how wet she is. Which wouldn’t be needed if she wore a coat! She’s currently able to text her brother to pick her up in the car but won’t when he’s back at Uni. So she’ll get wet. She has a coat that fits her and she likes. But still this continues….will see what happens in the depths of winter, it may change or it might not. They do have to learn so I’m not worrying about it too much.

BauhausOfEliott · 08/09/2025 10:49

To be honest, I think I'd be warm enough in a blazer over a school shirt and jumper on about 95% of days, myself - even in winter. Wearing a coat over a blazer would make me feel a bit bundled up and claustrophobic.

SepticPegsSepticLeg · 08/09/2025 10:52

Coats are only resorted too here in the depths of winter.

DS has a pac-a-mac for his backpack but it rarely gets used.

I focused on under-layering. Thermal tshirt to wear under his shirt, a school jumper, long sleeved shirts and then the blazer. Boots and thick socks that can come up to the knees.

A hat, scarf and gloves added seems acceptable around here.

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 08/09/2025 10:53

Mine don't have to wear blazers until 5th and 6th year and as soon as my DS got his blazer he has refused to wear a coat ever since. Scotland so its always raining and freezing. Even in the snow he refuses a coat.

DD 2nd year still happily wearing coats.

ohidoliketobe · 08/09/2025 10:53

No coats here either. At most I can convince DS to wear a fleece lined waterproof jacket was long as it's under armour/ north face other generic acceptable brand and is small enough to fit inside his backpack. To be fair he cycles and it takes 10 mins, he will sometimes wear gloves if it's particularly cold.

Talipesmum · 08/09/2025 10:55

Thin raincoat to put over the top if it’s raining. No extra coat for warmth, though one of my boys likes to wear one when it’s v cold outside as he likes being cosy. Beanie hat is often permitted when it’s cold out.

Obeseandashamed · 08/09/2025 10:56

Coats are uncool around here too. We’ve been through the north face and Canada goose stage too. This year it seems to be hoodies under blazers and then taken off before registration and put back on after lessons/school.
